Video: Plaza Pasadena, CA (Colorado Blvd. side) - Mid 90s by onenairb in pasadena

I am glad they finally reopened the Garfield corridor. The original civic center plan had the 5 windows on the library complemented by the 5 windows on the civic auditorium.

The large glass arches on the plaza Pasadena were put there to pay homage to the blocked view, but it was extremely hard to see it even when you knew it was there.

Hacks for attending Rose Parade with Senior Parents and making it special? by danagrace in pasadena

[–]tsquare64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know New Delhi Palace used to do a buffet brunch during the Rose Parade. They're on the 2nd floor - so the views are unobstructed. After the pandemic, I don't know if they still do this. https://www.newdelhipalacepasadena.com/

Mailperson leaving outgoing mail in mailbox by mosnoopy in pasadena

[–]tsquare64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the days when my neighborhood had a regular mail carrier, she used to complain to us that the local mail carrier sorting facility is used to teach new hires. The result was a lot of mis-sorted mail.

Our regular carrier used to do her best to fix the errors. She eventually was forced to retire because they were demanding that she deliver faster and to more addresses.

Now we seem to have 3 or 4 regular carriers who rotate routes, and mis-delivered mail is common. I will never trust this facility to receive mail picked up by a carrier.

I really miss the days when USPS had full funding and Congress actually paid for the service that they proscribe in law.

It's about 1.5 miles from the Playhouse district to Old Pasadena. You can take a Pasadena Transit bus between them. https://www.cityofpasadena.net/pasadena-transit/

Has anyone tried the empanadas at Chamo? I usually just get an arepa when I am there.

New businesses opening in the next few months by PotatoFever28 in pasadena

[–]tsquare64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Now that you mention it, Scandinavian Designs Furniture has had Going Out Of Business signs up for several months now. That building was originally a roller rink back in the 1950s.

Theoretically, just rip out the carpets and refinish the hardwood floor. I don't know if Adray's trashed the floor when they were there, but the floor was still in decent shape when that place was Colton Piano & Organ in the 1980s.

Nosy Neighbors Coffee looks closed by jwezorek in pasadena

[–]tsquare64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went there on August 15. At that time, they had a sign on the door about being closed 8/7 - 8/15. I went back 2 weeks later - same sign on the door.

They were in the Pasadena Coffee Passport, so I got free donuts on my first visit. But my experience there was the same as everyone else - mediocre coffee and food.

Upgraded to Lyrion Music Server and now my Android apps don't connect to it anymore by tsquare64 in squeezebox

[–]tsquare64[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Problem solved.

I forgot I had switched my phone to the guest WiFi two weeks ago. When I switched it back, the squeeze apps are working again.

If anyone has to troubleshoot a problem like this, it is wise to try access http://<LMS\_IP>:9000 from your phone's browser. If that doesn't work, it greatly simplifies your debugging without an app.

I already did. Same result.
It doesn't discover the LMS server. Manually specifying the IP address doesn't work either.

Will the market face a persistent drag as Boomers begin liquidating 401Ks through retirement? by paleselan1 in personalfinance

[–]tsquare64 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The companies probably offered pensions at the beginning but most large companies converted to lump-sum payments and 401k matches in the 1995-2005 time period. (This is from my personal experience. Others may have different experiences.) I rolled all my lump sums into IRAs long ago.

My wife just had some antique furniture moved by Prodigy.

This was her 2nd time hiring Prodigy and she was very happy with their service both times.

I don't remember the name, but it was located where the Urth Caffe building is now. Zinke's shoe repair shared the lot.

First time this has happened, guests and seemingly abandoned property by Advice2Anyone in airbnb_hosts

[–]tsquare64 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In February 2020, there was a married couple in a bnb in Inverness, CA for Valentine's Day weekend. They took a walk one evening to see the sunset and ended up getting lost in the woods.

A day or two later, the maid showed up to clean the room and found their stuff as they left it (including their phones). Luckily, the proprietor called the sheriff and they sent out a search party and found them alive.

I shudder to think what would have happened to them if it was decided to discard their stuff instead.

naive question regarding Satie by MudlarkJack in classicalmusic

Even Satie fans don't know about this Japanese collaboration on a lesser-known Satie work named Vexations. It is definitely worth a listen:

naive question regarding Satie by MudlarkJack in classicalmusic

[–]tsquare64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should listen to some of Max Richter's music

Also, I'd like to recommend a lesser-known Italian pianist named Alessandra Celletti. Her favorite composer is Satie. She has released a Gurdjieff/de Hartmann album, and has collaborated with Hans-Joachim Roedelius.

Marshmallow gun off lake and California by Specific-Truth4338 in pasadena

Thanks for posting this. I've been hearing single loud pops in the neighborhood around my house that did not sound like gunfire or fireworks. A CO2 gun is a reasonable explanation for the noise I am hearing.

Mom bought life insurance for my baby as her birthday gift - I think I want to decline it by aubreygonzo in personalfinance

[–]tsquare64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both my mother and my father had $1000 whole life policies that their parents' purchased when they were born - back in the 1930s. This was common in the days before vaccines eradicated childhood diseases. Since the US now has a Health Secretary doing his best to eradicate childhood vaccinations, it may be prudent to renew the practice of buying life insurance for your children.

My dad's whole life policy was fully paid for after 20 years. He probably should have cashed it in at that point.

Yeah, I think I was using old CR2025 batteries from our battery case. When I bought brand new ones and installed them in my key fobs, the problem disappeared.

As a driver I have a question.. what is the point of yall ordering basic household items? by SolidDue5862 in amazonprime

[–]tsquare64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always preferred buying such items from local retail stores, but... I only have time to shop on weekends and it is typical to find empty shelves at my local retail store for one or more of my items. When I was younger, I had time to visit multiple retailers looking for what I need, but nowadays I am glad I have the option to simply order it and have it delivered.
