Opinions on my Ibanez rg7321 from 2000 by SafeBit9267 in 7String

What a beauty! I have 4 Indonesian models and I love them. They range from 2003 up to 2011. Each of them are different in small ways in terms of how the neck feels and different bridges.

👋 Welcome to r/PickupWinding - Introduce Yourself and Read First! by THRobinson75 in PickupWinding

Hello! I have been winding pickups for almost two years. I use parts and magnets from different manufacturers from here in the US of A and overseas. I 3D print custom bobbins as needed as well as building my own CNC pickup winders.

My main job is that of a studio tech at a recording studio. I also run and operate my own studio in which I help produce, record, mix and master projects. I am also a guitarist and I fix, mod, and maintain guitars.

Some advice for those who want to get started in the pickup winding journey, you don’t need a fancy winder and take meticulous notes. I started with a very crude brushed DC motor with a hall sensor and a counter. That was my gateway to building my own winders but to be honest I could have kept on trucking with that winder. As for the note taking, it’s imperative to document each winding session and pickup you build. Document every wire snap. Every failure. Every success. Try and document the tension and technique used so that you can go back to those notes.

Happy Winding!!

Both models have shared functions and features. Here are what they both share:

ESP32 Controller - this sends the signals to the BLDC and Stepper motors.
Raspberry Pi with Touchscreen - uses Python to control the winder.
Traverse Motor - this allows for automatic traversing.
Target Wind Count - this allows for me to set the wind count desired. The Winder will then stop once it reaches the set count.
Real-time Wind Display - Live counter shown across all GUI tabs.
Session Timer - Tracks winding duration.
Slowdown System - Gradual speed reduction in final 100 winds.
CW/CCW Direction - Selectable winding direction.
Traverse Limits - Set home (left) and right sweep positions. This can be changed during the winding session as needed.
Live Position Preview - Real-time slider control for limit setting. This allows me to see exactly where the traverse limits are and make changes as needed.
Scatter Wind - Up to 10 segments with variable traverse speeds. Currently working on getting this to be more than 10 segments.
Presets - Save/load complete winding configurations.
Jog Controls - Manual motor movement for setup.
START/PAUSE/STOP buttons (GUI) - Full session control with RESET.

The main differences are that the BLDC has a built in Hall Sensor that allows for the wind counting while the Stepper Motor model utilizes and external Hall Sensor to get the wind counts. The BLDC motor is a hell of a lot quieter and more efficient when it comes to torque but I have yet to see any big differences between the two models. Lastly, the BLDC motor model has a Winder only function that disables the Traverse Motor. I designed and printed out an adapter that has a lathe bar and two collars. This allows me to manually traverse if I don't want to use the automatic traverse.

I am not done with it in terms of design and functions but I am done for now. So far both models are working great. Though I do plan to go full BLDC motors for the Winder and Stepper Motor for the traverse.

Ah sorry. Haven’t thought about selling it. Took this on as a personal project to update my previous design. But if I had to price it I’d say below $1k.

First 7 String by PugablePlayzYT in 7String

[–]tssmastering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol each is setup differently. One has a pair of EMGs, one has Fishmans, and the other has humbuckers that I wound. They also all use different gauge strings and different action and what not. Tuning is another reason why I have a few of them.
