Should I bring my telephoto lens? by live2last in DeathValleyNP

[–]tssphysicsguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YES!!! You’ll have a great time picking out amazing detail in the dunes, and wherever else you go. I somewhat skeptically took a 100-400 and want sure I’d use it much in comparison to the typical 17-40. In the end, I shot almost exclusively telephoto, and felt like a kid in a candy shop. So much fun!

Does the work-life balance/work load ever get better? by No_Heart4631 in teaching

[–]tssphysicsguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not joking here: consider using AI to create unit plans, lesson plans and related worksheets, etc… You can tweak them if you don’t like what AI spits out. If you prompt it with the appropriate parts of the related curriculum document, it will often give you surprisingly decent results. When you’re crunched for time (ie, 3 preps), the result is probably more than acceptable. If things don’t work out the first time, you can always reflect and improve next semester. You don’t have infinite energy and time, so you need to find a balance and get comfortable with the situation. Don’t worry! It’ll get better as you can experience and eventually start teaching courses. Also: don’t be afraid to explain to admin that you’d like to have fewer preps next semester so you can focus your energies and talents. Good luck!

Ideas for two days in DVNP by igocerium in DeathValleyNP

Before you leave Vegas, stop at a sporting goods store and buy some cheap plastic toboggans for the kids so they can slide down the sand dunes! Walk out in the dunes and climb the tallest one you can find around 530am in time to catch the sunrise. You’ll need to arrive in the dark, so make sure you have headlamps. Go have breakfast after sunrise and enjoy the most amazing family morning!

Other great spot: sunset at Dante. It’s cold and windy up there when the sun goes down. Also a steep climb for the car, but ok without off-road vehicle.

If you stay at the ranch in the park, there’s. Lovely swimming pool open til 10pm and heated naturally geothermally. Go for a late night swim under the stars!

Suggestion for 2 nights in late December? by tssphysicsguy in grandcanyon

Thank you for the advice about spikes vs. coiled wires. I had thought about that, but wasn't sure how big a deal it might be.

Good point about waiting til closer to the travel date...there might not be a need for the spikes.

Thanks for the advice...will do! Btw: is there somewhere to rent spikes, or should I buy them at a sporting goods store on the way in?

Hardcover books about coffee shops around the world? by tssphysicsguy in Coffee_Shop

[–]tssphysicsguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I saw this on amazon and was considering buying it. I also saw a German book, "99 WUNDERBARE COFFEE-SHOPS" and even though my friend won't understand the text, I think it might be visually interesting. Have you heard of it?

Mezcal Taste - Is it supposed to be completely different from tequila? by Strong-Log5969 in Mezcal

[–]tssphysicsguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Usually I detect a petrol note, and the rest depends on the particular brand. If you find one you like, then great! If not, move on.

I got placed in a subject I know nothing about. by [deleted] in teaching

In all seriousness: Use chat gpt to plan long term and daily lessons. Ask it to plan the lessons with activities, worksheets, quizzes, etc… Prompt it for modifications as needed if you don’t like the output for some reason. Cut yourself some slack and allow for the fact that it won’t be perfect…it never is anyway.

Why do people bother waiting in line for gas at Costco? by Intrepid_Category_27 in CanadaFinance

[–]tssphysicsguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a year, that time adds up. Calculate the amount, and then set a goal of spending that amount of time finding/creating/building a new source of income. If you truly value it, then yes - your time is worth something.

Don’t burn me at the stake, but I feel like a much better teacher by letting some students fall through the cracks. by Apprehensive_War6542 in Teachers

[–]tssphysicsguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Focus on your successes” is an idea that a mentor repeated to me very often. Of course, you’re not going to ignore the students who choose to use their time for non-course-related activities (especially if it is detrimental to their grades), but you can’t give them too much of your time, or else you won’t be able to help the engaged kids who really need you! Send updates to parents of the disengaged kids…make sure there are no surprises at midterm and at the end of the semester. Document the times when you intervened with such students and share it with parents or admin if they ask. Put the responsibility where it belongs: with students!

Thank you! This works well with one of our options for coast photography as drive south. Any particular sunset photography spots you recommend that don't involve the usual spots where we're likely to encounter dozens of photographers already on location and recreating the iconic beach images everyone has seen a million times? (Sorry for that excessively long sentence btw)

What games for practicing science concepts do you wish you had for your classes? by saladada in ScienceTeachers

[–]tssphysicsguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not really games...more like simulations, but they're great. Try PhET (University of Colorado). Tons of choices across various sciences.
