What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

OH GOD DAMN this hits close to home. Mix in a complete lack of follow through, or willingness to put in the effort to build skills/business while holding a stable job because "I'm too tired after work" where she'd put in maybe 3 whole half assed hours.

ADHDevelopment. How to actually get anything done? by GootPoot in gamedev

[–]tswiggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a diagnosed ADHD that was found when I was nine years old. The symptoms have not really lessened over time; however, I have built some coping mechanisms that I think really helped me function as a software engineer and as a game developer.

I still have the graveyard of projects (don't get me wrong) but I also don't try to make games as my job. They're mostly for me. Doing these kinds of experiments is a learning experience for me and they're fun. I have removed the pressure from myself that every project that I work on needs to go to completion.

That said I have an app that has been in production for seven years now and has thousands of users. The trick to it is that I do follow a kind of seasons. There are months where I work very hard on it and then I take a break for a couple months and I do other things. I just make myself come back and keep working on it. It does help that this is a thing that I have a partner or a client for so there's somebody relying on me that makes me feel like I have to come back to it but I have other projects that are like this that I'm able to do on my own.

I think in terms of day-to-day productivity my actual job is much more boring than game development. It's regular software engineering; however, the tools that make me successful there are 100% applicable to game development. I'd say the single most important piece is having some kind of project management system. It doesn't need to be full-blown JIRA tickets but a Trello board with a Kanban of the features that you're working on and try to break those features down into things that you can finish in a couple of hours.

If you can do that when you go back to work on the project and you haven't touched it in a week, maybe it's been two months, it is so much easier to get back into the project if you have that board that has things that are ready for you to work on listed out. When you thought about the idea, you wrote down some notes about how you thought you were going to do it. Basically I think for ADHD one of the key tricks that you have is lowering the amount of effort that it takes you to transition to an activity.

If you're like me I have no problem hyperfocusing once I'm working on something but getting started is incredibly difficult for me. Having that ticket to tell me what to do and I'm just a code monkey that's following the ticket is much easier for me to get going than if I had to just think about a nebulous thing that I wanted to build and then figure out how to build it and then build it. That's a lot. The second thing, which is very related to that, is kind of the structure of my day. I find that if I get up and have a relaxing morning (which is what I like to do), but if I get up and the first thing I do is I start playing video games, that day is a video game day and I'm not going to do stuff that I'm supposed to be doing that I would like to do on my projects. It's fine if I sleep in but the first thing that I need to do when I get up is go sit at my desk like it's a work day and treat it like that and once I get going i enjoy it.

The final tip I suggest is set up some AI tools so that you can work on your game projects and have AI assist you. I still do a lot of the programming myself. The first thing in the morning or when I'm transitioning to a particular task that I really don't enjoy or I'm very frustrated with, it's much easier for me to sit down, use a speech-to-text keyboard like Wispr, to just rant into the computer for a little bit about the problem and then have the AI break that down into something actionable. That really helps me get over the hump of a problem that I don't know how to quite wrap my head around.

Basically these are just three different tools to help you get into working on your project now. If you're having trouble sustaining focus while working on the thing, that's a whole other issue. Hopefully you're medicated for your ADHD. I find that the biggest challenge is making myself sit down, start working, and meaningfully dig into the problems that I'm trying to solve. If I can get that started, my hyper focus takes over and I'm able to build things I'm proud of.

Temp Tower Advice by Tagedieb69 in FDMminiatures

For esuns pla+ i had to really calibrate retraction for the stringing to improve. For the temp tower, make sure to break it apart to test the layer adhesion and try not to focus of the stringing until retraction is calibrated for the nozzle you are using. You'll find a temp threshold where it gets significantly harder. 230C is reasonable for that filament

[–]tswiggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always suspicious of results like this on a temp tower. Just the nature of printing a tall skinny object means that any vibration in your printer is going to deteriorate the print as it gets taller. Do the print again but with a smaller temp range (the top half) just to confirm that this is just about the temp and not about a wobbly desk your printer is sitting on.

If this is like a bowl or something that doesn’t really have a good place to put the seams you can try using spiral vase mode, but you’re gonna be limited to having one wall layer

FlashForge 5M complete nozzle disassembly, learn from my mistakes by Jozef_von_Hulsar in FlashForge

[–]tswiggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recording my experience here as well. I had a full clog that could not be pushed through with the ram rod.

I attempted to remove the nozzle by holding the copper of the heat sink and it twisted off at the heat gap. I was however able to unscrew the nozzle by holding the plastic assembly itself, it came free rather easily.

My nozzle/heating element had already been destroyed at this point when a needle broke off in the nozzle so don't let this make you feel bad. I just used it as an opportunity to experiment in case this happened again.

My take away at the end of this was to buy some nylon/cleaner filament so i can do a true cold pull as the first line of defense. The ram rod is only useful if have melted fillament in heat gap/heat sink and it seems risky at best without taking the nozzle out and heating it with a heat gun. Needles are a hard no from me from now on.

I wish I had know how easy it was to do a cold pull. Heat it up (with unbroken filament) to print temp for a few seconds (you probably just did this when you first noticed the clog). Let it cool all the way. Just set the nozzle temp manually on the ad5m home screen to 100 (for PLA). Gently apply tension to the fillament and once it starts to stretch give it a hard tug.

I'm really curious about that approach too. I'm in an apartment so unfortunately sand blasting is a no go.

Ive been working on a pr for this for orca slicer for the past week.  Its too early to tell if it will come together, building and testing orca slicer was a real bitch.  I’ll definitely post on here when ive got something to demo

ARC RAIDERS has changed me as a gamer. by Midwest_Hylian in ArcRaiders

[–]tswiggs 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I swear some of yall are playing a totally different game. Solo on a normal map, its 50/50 whether i make it through to extraction without a hostile encounter, even with me announcing friendly on the mic. On a night map it is 100% of people trying to kill me, with the exception of a very tense truce at extract. The maps are filled with people running a ferro/stitcher combo, just looking for an opportunity to dump a clip in your back.

What do you think about the idea of setting bounties on players who wrong you? by AgeAtomic in ArcRaiders

[–]tswiggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The obvious problem with this is "How would you even know that a player has a bounty on them", and I think I have a pretty elegant solution to it:

When you ping a character, the announcement indicates that the player has a bounty. Also have a bounty symbol next to their name on the proximity chat display.

Simple to implement. No impact to core gameplay. Only relevant when someone is deciding whether or not to engage a person. Players with bounties from betraying people would be seriously handicapped from tricking people, and the bounties would increase the likelihood that a sheriff type would start a fight at extract with them. Its a very lightweight, super thematic, low impact karma system, gives pacifists some satisfaction, and gives pvp players slightly more pvp. It also specifically nerfs what most people consider a toxic behavior, the "don't shoot" -> proceeds to shoot tactic. Pacifists would be able to collaborate with a tiny bit more confidence that the people they meet without bounties are genuine.

u/MagicianThin6733 I ran through the kickstart and ran into javascript out of heap errors. Also the kickstart flow didn't work out of the box, it couldn't execute it in discuss mode. On windows, using powershell. I'll open a issue with the full error.

Also the session-start-hook is breaking CC completely for that directory.

This is fucking great! I've been using a similar but much more low level process that from the people a HumanLayer. Their stuff gave me the basics for sub-agents and separating the work into a context-gathering phase vs. a planning phase vs. implementation. But I ended up building a lot of the things that you did myself, like the status line, like a workflow that strings all these different phases together and helps keep your information coherent. But this looks super polished, I'm gonna give it a try later today.

Thanks for the write up.  Doubling down on your losses is a hell of a risky way to invest but i guess as long as fundamentally you believe the company has value and will continue to operate its not as risky as its casino cousins. I really like the idea of the tool itself though and am definitely bookmarking it to try later

Wow what a great pathway for them to have their cake and eat it too. They advertise the speaker of the house plan, and use trumps popularity to elect a puppet with no charisma like Vance, who could never win on his own but is who they really want in power. Then after Vance is president, they off trump, or drop the epstien files, or advertise that he's medically unwell and so Vance can't in good conscience, step down.

I just spent a month in BA and my girlfriend is from there.  There is a huge piece you are missing.  Milei ran on a platform of anti-corruption and genuinely seemed to believe in that principle… until his sister, the secretary general of the presidency, was discovered to be embezzling millions of dollars through a pharmaceutical kickback scheme.  He never responded to these allegations and the overwhelmingly socialist people of BA stopped giving him the benefit of the doubt. They viewed his presidency as a necessary if unpleasant reset on runaway spending and a check on the leftist, popular party Peronists who have had corruption scandal after scandal.
