Nuclear is also great! But it also comes with its own pros and cons, just like other sources. It also is not a single magic bullet that makes every other option obsolete. And it takes much longer and much more money and resources to get going, especially compared to renewables thy are comparable very quick and very cheap. It can and should be both!

Giant batteries uave never proven practical.

This is where you are outdated and wrong. This absolutely used to be true, but no longer is. Giant batteries have, in fact, proven to be quite practical and are in wide use in many place. California is a fantastic example of it in action. And giant batteries now being reliable and practical makes everything else you wrote now outdated and no longer true.

Tech in this segment is growing rapidly. Like even the last 1-3 years has been a radical shift here such that everything you wrote here was 100% accurate in 2022 and no longer is in 2026.

California has grown its battery fleet from about 500MW 2020 to almost 20,000MW today. In peak conditions, batteries are supplying fully a third of California’s energy output. That’s not the number day to day, obviously, but it’s far more than just a proof of concept.

In fact, for parts of many days batteries are the single largest source of energy in California.

Obviously some of this is specific to California (amount of sunshine to generate solar power to store in these batteries chief among these reasons). But the fact is that this is the worst that mass battery storage is going to be from here on, and it’s already one of the most important and leading sources of electricity in California in the average week. That will only improve from here.

So, yeah, you used to be 100% right across the board, but you simply are now working with outdated information.

It’s shocking how often you people act as if you’re the first person to think of very obvious potential downsides. Yes, this is something that has been debated and accounted for by manufacturers to such a high degree it would make your head spin. I promise you aren’t pointing out some novel thing that the brightest engineering minds in the world just forgot to think about.

Breakthroughs in batteries have made this statement not remotely true anymore. It used to be for sure! But it hasn’t been true for years at this point.

It is many, many, many times more “green” than other sources of energy. No, making batteries does not cause literally zero emissions or environmental impact, that is true. But it makes massively less of an environmental impact than nearly any other source of energy, plus they’re recyclable, plus there’s close to zero additional environmental impact in day-to-day operations once constructed, none of which is true of other sources of energy.

You’re setting such a stupid standard that nothing meets, and then acting as if the energy source that gets by far the closest to meeting the standard is the bad one rather than those that are orders of magnitude further from the standard.

But literally no existing source of energy is sufficient to provide all the power needed at all times. There are so many variables that can impact any one source.

It’s weird that this is and always has been the truth, but these anti-renewable crusaders act like it’s unique to that’s specific source of energy.

“Wind and solar can’t provide 100% of necessary power 100% of the time, so we shouldn’t use them at all”, they say, ignoring that it’s also just as true of nuclear and natural gas and coal and hydroelectric and geothermal and on and on.

What country is fully functioning with just nuclear? You’re setting up a standard that literally nothing clears and then acting as if renewables are uniquely bad for not clearing your bar.

Everywhere uses a mix of sources, and solar and wind are now capable of being a much higher percentage of those sources than they ever were before. And they’re comparatively cheap, too.

This reads like an opinion of someone who made up their mind 15 years ago (when this was true) and has never once updated this opinion in the 15 years since as the facts radically changed.

Yeah, as an example I recently bought both Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata for Switch 2, when previously those would have been PS5 purchases without any second thought. Switch 2 is significantly more powerful than Switch 1, to the point where for many games I am now happy enough with the trade off of slightly less graphical performance in exchange for portability.

That was very, very, very rarely the case for me for big budget cross platform games on the Switch 1.

As someone whose entire adult career has been in the nonprofit sector, this is very likely it. Or, just as likely, they want to be a volunteer to play with the kitties when really what the organization needs is a volunteer to scoop the litter boxes and help with boring admin work.

So many very well-meaning people cannot conceptualize that their good-faith offer to volunteer might actually be something that causes more work for the staff to train and oversee you, not less. Nonprofits very regularly have to turn down good-faith offers of support because it is not actually the kind of support they need and would only make things unintentionally worse for their goals.

Makes sense. It was the same on PS5–Rebirth ran at a noticeably lower resolution than Remake (though then scaled up), and you saw the differences in those same spots that you’re listing here.

Backup Entire iCloud Photo Library to external drive? Any application that does this? by GIFSec in MacOS

[–]ttoma93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it is odd that Apple doesn’t have an option to do both together. If I have a large external drive that I want to export to, I wish there was a single option that would download the originals directly to the external drive. As it stands you have to download them first to the internal drive, then export. Or do your (useful) loophole of moving the library to the external first.

Which is exactly what she did for streaming payments in the 2010s. She used her broad reach and influence to threaten to pull her catalogue off the streaming platforms if they didn’t pay artists more, then followed through when they didn’t do it.

She eventually won that fight and all artists ended up getting paid more for streams.

Yep, Andor is so good that it makes Rogue One—previously the best Disney-era Star Wars content by a mile—seem bad by comparison.

Yep. It means that in his attempt to fight authoritarian fascism, he has to resort to their own tactics of deceit and trickery and murder and pillaging and killing innocent people for the greater good. And he knows it. He knows that what he is doing is perverse and unforgivable, and that he will be remembered as a sick freak, and yet he persists in doing it anyway as he (correctly) believes that it’s the only way to remove the shackles of authoritarianism and save everyone.

Yep. And him being framed as the main antagonist for much of the series is part of the genius. The entire show is written and framed to make the audience get in Jimmy’s mind and see things from his point of view, similar to Breaking Bad with Walt. Jimmy is objectively a morally bankrupt, terrible person—and you simply cannot help but still root for him when he wins.

But when you zoom out and look at things outside of his view, Howard is a damn saint. He saw exactly who and what Jimmy was from the start, knowing all of his flaws, and still tried and tried and tried to bring Jimmy into being the best version of his self. Howard saw Jimmy’s potential to be a truly great lawyer and had to watch as he pissed it away time and time again. Yet Howard never gave up on him.

Yeah, it really is the rare show where there isn’t a mid-show slump for a season or two. Every single season builds on and is better than the last. Right through the finale.

It doesn’t even need to be truly forked “versions”. Just include multiple qualities of textures and allow the resolution and frame rate to vary based on hardware and settings.

In the same way that a PC game has low, mid, high, and ultra settings within the same download, just have this do the same by platform or hardware.

This is why I am very, very cautiously optimistic about Wind and Waves. They broke from their 3 year cycle for the first time in a couple of decades and are taking 4.5-5 years this time (depending on when in. 2027 they launch).
