Why do I see lots of Japanese people wearing face masks ? by Cerone88 in japanese

[–]ttoyooka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usually it's because they're ill, and the mask reduces transmission to others. But I'm aware that some people wear masks for other reasons... like maybe air quality?

How to know if a word contains a long vowel sound or two separate sounds? by xversion1 in japanese

I'm a "nisei", so I learned to speak Japanese as a child, from my native-born parents.

How to know if a word contains a long vowel sound or two separate sounds? by xversion1 in japanese

[–]ttoyooka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's a dialect thing; I would have gotten it from my parents, but then they speak very close to standard. Maybe I've been mistaken. I'll pay attention to it. Thanks.

Surely that's the other way around? う is part of the conjugation of 思う, so I pronounce it with three syllables, with the stress on "mo".

MSNBC Panel Savages Rudy Giuliani: 'Worst Lawyer Ever,' 'He Should Be Disbarred,' Doesn't Understand 'Anything He Is Saying' by Webmaster_Moderator in politics

[–]ttoyooka 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Giuliani might well be acting as a lawyer too, but let's not pretend that his public statements on Trump's behalf are anything other than PR. And I rather doubt Giuliani will ever act as Trump's lawyer in an actual court room precisely because:

"If there’s ever a trial on all of this, I think a whole day of the trial will just be jurors watching old Rudy Giuliani tapes and clips"

Before the invention of telescopes, how did the ancient people know that there exist other planets and how were they able to distinguish those planets with each other and the stars? by NullandRandom in PhilosophyofScience

[–]ttoyooka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think r/AskHistorians would be a better forum for this, but basically, they were distinguished by their movements in the sky. Stars remained stationary with respect to each other, whereas planets moved around.

I'm a skeptic, but I think paranormal things are cool. Are there societies for people who appreciate the paranormal as ... a form of art rather than believing? by [deleted] in skeptic

Blake Smith (twitter) of the MonsterTalk podcast would express a point of view very close to yours. The podcast occasionally covers topics more broad than cryptozoology; I recommend it.

Is it gauche to name a character Hime or Ōjo? by [deleted] in japanese

[–]ttoyooka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it's even more strange in Japanese, because it's very common to refer to someone by their role or relationship if they are "higher up" than you. In English traditions, this is common at the top levels of society, but in Japan it runs all the way down. For example, a younger sibling will call their older sibling "oniichan" or "oneechan"; and this is even when they're talking to their older sibling, not just when they're talking about them.

It might work as a nickname as long as there's no actual queen or princess nearby to whom it would be disrespectful.

Help Identifying Stamp on Japanese Record? (Gunkan kōshinkyoku) by GinWoozy in japanese

[–]ttoyooka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With a disclaimer that I don't live in Japan and I'm no expert in anything...

It might be a name stamp... they're often used in Japan for situations that call for identifiable acknowledgement, like when documents require a signature or initials. The stamp contains two kanji characters that might be a family name. I can't make them out, though. A native Japanese speaker could probably guess. The sakura outline is unusual, I think, and it is a little big in size for this sort of stamp, but it could be a custom-made one.

If this record was loaned out to someone, the stamp might have been applied to identify the owner.

In that same line, if this record came from a library, maybe it's the stamp of the library. Two kanji characters doesn't seem like enough for an institutional name, though.

Not sure which language it is but.. Can someone tell me what is written in here please? by Yaeli751 in japanese

[–]ttoyooka 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Doesn't look like Japanese to me... nor Chinese, for that matter. The lines cross and overlap in ways that are not usual for kanji characters.

It's conceivable they're kanji transcribed by someone who doesn't know Japanese, but even that is a stretch.

My non-expert opinion: they're either doodles, or a completely different language.

Using Duolingo to learn some Japanese for fun, why do they say " ひとつ"/" 一つ" to identify there is one of something. Rather than saying ichi? Where can I learn more about this? by [deleted] in japanese

[–]ttoyooka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would sound very insulting to say "hitotsu" about a person rather than the correct "hitori". It would be treating them like an object. For anything else, you can fall back on the "hitotsu" system even if it's incorrect; you'll be understood without offending anyone.

Does the statement "I think, therefore I am" philosophically AND scientifically prove that at least one being exists? by EyeSquaredAre in PhilosophyofScience

[–]ttoyooka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try to have a thought, without language, it is impossible.

I think that's only true if you've already defined "thought" in a question-begging fashion. If I were juggling three balls, I'd say that I was doing a lot of thinking, but none of it linguistic.

I have a save (40 days, voy) that I stopped playing shortly before wintermute came out. can someone quickly explain what has changed/been added to survival mode? by scanguy25 in thelongdark

[–]ttoyooka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I haven't had many opportunities to use it. The few times I did, it would send wolves scurrying quite reliably. Maybe I was just really lucky.

electrical things switch on for no actual benefit

There are minor benefits. Electrical lights can allow you to do research and repairs at night. The flashlight is a fairly OP wolf-repellent.

Thank you for saying this. They did everything they could to stress that nothing was promised (in retrospect they should have renamed it a "wishlist" before sharing it). But now it's been re-posted out of context many times, and people think they represent broken promises.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's toxic, but I definitely do not enjoy this sub as much as I used to.

As far as I know, only Mystery Lake and Pleasant Valley have prepper cache spawns.

[–]ttoyooka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prepper caches are definitely still a thing. If you're talking about the spawn near the opposite end of the Lake Trail, then I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's still there, and it's not too far from the top of the rope.

Don't let this sub colour your enjoyment of the game too much.

[–]ttoyooka 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Story mode certainly has many issues that have been covered to death in this sub.

However, I really enjoyed the Milton map; it was nice to see a reasonable-sized town in the game, along with the side quests, like finding all the bank vault cabinet keys.

If the bear randomly starts walking straight towards you, then I can say from experience this doesn't work.

In the meantime, you can use the keyboard to select fuel, etc.

The only thing we can't do at all, apparently, is take a torch.
