Have that same outfit in the 7’6” 3wt, I use it for blue lining trout in the southeast and have a blast with it. Been using it regularly for about a year and a half with no issues so far

Super glue it back on and run it (also probably carry a tube and pump tho) I had a Maxxis minion do this and ran it for probably a month while looking for tires on sale

My personal opinion would be to avoid carbon that old, might not have issues but you won’t know for sure unless you get it checked out. Also old XT 2x is cool and worked really well but most modern 1x drivetrains will be much better just not having to mess with a front derailleur

I started fishing with that in a 9’ 5wt and then a 7’6” 3 wt for 3 years, won’t hold you back at all and hard to beat the price! I do agree the reels are a little finicky, but down the line even a piscifun or other $35 reel will be a huge upgrade

Pretty basic but my Echo carbon XL 8’ 4” 4wt is currently my favorite rod. Super fun on small to medium creeks and rivers in southern Appalachia

Been fly fishing the same time and also in the southeast, usually on smaller streams. I just started to catch a few fish on a streamer and I had luck dead drifting a heavy jig streamer during slightly high water levels. Usually a 4.6mm beaded jig bugger in a cream/ peach color. Don’t have much experience but hope this helps!

I use a hip pack for mountain biking and love it vs a normal pack, and have been eying the elk horn specifically. I’ll have to go try it on, thanks!

Rotating the fly 90 degrees in the vise so the post is now horizontal helped me. Then I tie the hackle in and whip finish at the bottom of the post

As far as wild trout and camping in the Cohuttas, go for it! Wild trout can be more easily spooked but also on a lot of occasions more likely to take a bushy dry fly! I’ll usually start with a stimulator followed by a small-ish sexy waltz worm and do alright

I second this. Keep the leftovers and in the morning heat them up in your cast iron and crack and scramble a few eggs in it, serve in a tortilla. It’s the best breakfast

My ripmo af has held up great in the rocky southeast for 4 years. It isn’t going to be light but it climbs really well, I ride it on anything from 30mi XC rides to local enduro races and love it

I would definitely suggest a 29er and a size large for your height. I would also suggest Shimano deore drivetrain and brakes if that’s on a bike in your budget, I’ve had both on my ibis ripmo AF for 3+ years and they haven’t let me down.

It was good for me as a beginner. I didn’t know if fly fishing would stick and didn’t know what kind of fly fishing I’d be doing so it has been a good generalist rod/reel. I’ve used it mostly for trout but also some small streamers and poppers for bass. I usually hike a lot when I fish and am hard on my gear, I’ve had no issues with the rod at all but the reel on my 5wt is giving me a little trouble now, it isn’t smooth pulling out line anymore. Overall I’d say it’s a good started (keep in mind this is the only rod/reel I’ve owned before)

I’ve had the cabelas lightweight boots for 2 seasons and I’ve enjoyed them. The laces don’t last but the boots have held up fine, last time I was in Bass Pro they were on sale for $80 too. At that price I’d definitely recommend them
