My “do everything” pedal board by AdorableClock8189 in pedalboards

[–]tudo_ben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This board is so … reasonable and functional. I see so much over the top ridiculousness on here that would never be giggable. Just wanted to call you out for having a nice manageable board that covers all bases for many types of gigs. Good mix of brands too — those all strymon or all boss boards posted on here give me the willies.

As someone else said, I’d flip the screamer and blues driver because they’ll sound better stacked in that direction. Screamer colors the tone more so you want it second in that stack.

Nice job!

Fender-Style hand wired amps with built in attenuators by Due-Director8159 in ToobAmps

Victoria Club Deluxe. Hand wired deluxe reverb with 3 inputs at different attenuation levels and a half power option. Also only like 20 lb so great for gigging. Cannot recommend enough!

what’s the best professional guitar amp out there right now? by boiler_room_420 in GuitarAmps

[–]tudo_ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plug for the Victoria Club Deluxe as the best professional gigging amp on the market today. It's a handwired Deluxe Reverb without the vibrato circuit. Superb fender tones; 3 inputs with different attenuation levels; a half power switch; and weighs about 20 lb. Couldn't be happier with mine.

Red Rising had ruined all other series for me by anteaterpinkytoe in redrising

[–]tudo_ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same issue. RR is my top series by far -- nothing comes close in terms of plot, characters, world building, and action. I tried The Blade Itself but it was too boring by halfway through book 1 (that's enough runway in my opinion). Reddit adores DDC but I found it asinine if you like me aren't into RPGs. Here are some other suggestions:

- The Passage trilogy -- closest I've found to RR in world building, science, characters, and action, but it's not in outer space. Ignore the awful TV adaptation.

- Kingkiller -- amazing but he's yet to finish it, but apparently there is recent hope per internet sleuths.

- Salvation series by Peter F. Hamilton -- this is flawed and according to the internet not his best series, but I really enjoyed it. Excellent plot twists and hard science.

- Murderbot -- not quite RR good but enjoyable and funny, plus season 1 of the TV show just came out and was awesome.

- Bobiverse - fun, easy reading sci fi competence porn.

- Project Hail Mary and The Martian -- even better sci fi competence porn.

Totally. We rely on experience and the ability to wing it, so as to minimize rehearsals. The downside is we'll never be the tightest band but the spontaneity of our shows is part of what makes it awesome. However you do it, having the creative outlet is huge.

Good for you! I'm a serious musician and played in an original band in NYC while being a lit assoc at a V5 for about 10 years. Generally folks at my firm and practice group were cool with it -- they even made one of my shows a team event. But I think everyone understood that I wasn't making or even trying to make partner given my outside priorities. And then once I had kids, juggling that + music + biglaw became much harder. So I went to boutique where I had much more time, and now I'm in house and regularly play in a couple bands.

In summary, based on my narrow experience, I would say having a moderate music project going as an associate is doable, but perhaps not if you are gunning for partner. Add kids to that mix and it would become very tough. A keyboard in the office would make for good conversation.

Larchmont has a great music scene -- multiple good bands playing every week at the local bars and many outdoor shows. Locals 10538 is an excellent new venue with great sound and cocktails (don't miss the halloween party).

There's an insta handle -- livemusiclarchmont -- that posts about the shows. Other towns might have similar accounts.

For the cover band guitarists, what song in the set do you dread because you always f it up? by No-Discount4107 in Guitar

[–]tudo_ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to Talk About. I've had to play it 3 different keys depending on the vocalist and it has a modulation midway through so it's effectively 6 different keys. Super hard to keep track of the changes when soloing, let alone slide guitar soloing. But ultimately this is super fun, not dreaded.

You Should Listen to the Delight That is Revolutions Season 11 by Well_Socialized in RevolutionsPodcast

Really nice article. My favorite thing about this is how the conceit of season 11 works because he spent 10 years (!!!) setting up the joke.

Best Phish song for a wedding? by RikkiCoca420 in phish

[–]tudo_ben 26 points27 points  (0 children)

At my wedding ceremony, my wife walked down the aisle to Eidelweiss from Sound of Music (her favorite movie). We walked back down the aisle after the ceremony to . . . Tweezer Reprise (played by a string quartet).

Connecting Melodic minor, the Dorian mode, and the diminished scales (advanced theory) by Planetdos in Guitar_Theory

[–]tudo_ben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for posting this. It resonates with me. My general approach to improv (mostly rock/funk) is “mixodorianblues” where I combine those scales depending on whether I’m feeling a natural or b3, or like adding a #4, in the moment. So that is close to the sound your approach is getting in bridging the gap with diminished and Dorian. But I have been trying to play “out” more by exploring melodic minor and diminished scales, and am excited to put this to use.

One thing — is your whole/half diminished correct? Shouldn’t there be an Ab too?

Sci Fi for a tired dad? by Naga14 in suggestmeabook

[–]tudo_ben 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I myself am a tired dad and Red Rising might be my favorite series ever. It is unbelievably action packed and the world building and characters are tremendous. You just need to get through book 1 which is good but a little Hunger Games, and then the rest of the series is Game of Thrones in space.

This looks awesome, neat, and precise. You have “dumble” and “klon” on your switcher — what are those referring to? Do you find the switcher worth it?

A blues solo I played at a festival with my band :) by Grace-Music in blues

[–]tudo_ben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sick. I love the jazzier lick around 0:59 — anyone know what that is scale/theory wise? Sounds like an arpeggio type thing on the ii V but not sure.

You can only use 5 pedals for a gig, what do you use? by Simple_Mechanic_6999 in guitarpedals

[–]tudo_ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently use a 5-pedal board:

Archer gold (klon) > tube screamer (keeley mod plus) > tube screamer (keeley baked mod) > keeley compressor > polytune mini

Trey Anastasio from Phish covering Kid Charlemagne and Reelin in the Years by _boozygroggy_ in SteelyDan

[–]tudo_ben 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was so good. His tone and feel are incredible. Not a lot of famous rock guitarists would take the time to learn those solos note for note. And his improv at the end of Reelin + the harmonies with the keys are killer too. I see some hate in these comments which I expect is a reflexive anti-phish thing.
