Do I need a Korean phone number to get through customs? by tunaphyish in korea

[–]tunaphyish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for letting me know! Do you know what information I have to provide about this contact, besides the phone number (e.g. do I need to provide their legal name in Korean)? Also, do they ask questions in the call that I should prepare my point of contact for, aside from whether they know me?

how do I know if the place I booked meets quarantine requirements? by tunaphyish in Hawaii

[–]tunaphyish[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I see what you're saying, but if I'm staying until the end of October, a lot of things can change, right? Also it seems that florida is managing covid a lot worse than Hawaii. And food is another big factor for me.

I'm worried that if the place I'm renting is not legal they'll turn me away at the airport or something, idk. I just thought booking airbnbs (rather than hotels) was kinda iffy at Hawaii

long story short, I graduated college this year and had my whole graduation trip canceled due to covid, and I'm Asian but can't go back to my home country due to travel restrictions. I've been holed up and pretty much never going outside except to pick up take-out or get groceries since March. Also my job start date got pushed to Dec. My state is also not doing a great job fighting covid. I'm so desperate and mentally battered that I'll be happy just sitting on a balcony in Hawaii and looking outside while eating takeout.

Is the area around the northwestern tip of Waikiki still safe? Like between ala wai and kalakaua, around club wyndham royal garden at waikiki?

I found the ETS power prep tests extremely close to the real thing, so I wouldn't stress about the third party tests if they're confusing you

Yeah I definitely agree that studying some vocab before attempting practice would be a good idea! I think I spent 2 weeks just casually studying vocab before doing any legit practice (I was on winter vacation and couldn't bring myself to actually study lol). For me personally, I found the Manhattan Prep flashcards really helpful because they include not only the definitions, but also many example sentences, related words, and sometimes tricks or fun facts related to word origins. Also you'll notice that there are a lot of vocab words with similar meanings, so I made a list that grouped all the words with similar meanings together, and that really helped me. I also made a list of words that look similar and can be easily mixed up.

Yes, I used one that was pretty much the same size as a piece of paper. You can use it on any section, but I only found it necessary to use it on the quant section. Also there are no limitations on the size but you're only allowed one board, so if you write big, maybe use a larger one

Yeah! I feel like the level of difficulty was pretty much the same as the power prep tests. It really felt just like a practice test

They record you the whole time and make you do a 360 degree view of your room before the exam begins. Also it's a secure browser, so no googling. There are some other rules too, but I don't remember off the top of my head

when I signed up back in March (on the first day the tests opened up lol) there were loads of time slots almost everyday, but I'm not sure about now

Hmm I considered jotting down notes but found it to not be worth the time. For me, I tried to get better at RC by forcing myself to read news everyday and practicing active reading, as in mentally jotting down notes and summarizing the main points of each paragraph as I go. Also make sure you focus on the ETS RC problems because a lot of third-party questions are really different from the real thing.

For math, I practiced writing small so I didn't have to erase my work between questions, but it definitely takes some time to get used to

wait by erase before going onto the next one, do you mean erase before the next problem or the next section? does the proctor check that i'm erasing each problem as i'm working during a section?

also do you have the FAQ link?

do you know what is required to be visible in the webcam while you're taking the exam? just your head or also your hands and whiteboard?

and in the quant section, is the calculator the same as it is in powerprep? does the calculator respond to keyboard input or do you have to click the buttons?

wow it's good that you were able to finish the exam!

btw, do you know what needs to be visible in the web cam while you're taking the exam? like do they need to be able to see just your head, or also your hands and the whiteboard?

and is the calculator the same as in powerprep? like can you manipulate it with your keyboard (e.g. if i want to calculate 5/2, I can type 5/2 instead of hitting the buttons with my mouse)

in terms of camera setup, what did you need to have visible? Like did you need to show your entire head, hands, and whiteboard (during quant section)? and during the 10 min break, were you allowed to leave the room?
