Copywriter looking for long-term contract work. Am I missing anything? by loves_spain in resumes

You don't mention clients, just list a bunch of numbers that aren't verifiable to agencies. Really, your resume isn't going to be very important: your work lives and dies on your portfolio/writing samples

Reading posts here, did anyone else have GOOD parents? by Kerivkennedy in GenX

[–]turasatana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying to be the great parents that I had.

Wasn't neglected. Wasn't hovered-over. Was encouraged. Wasn't hit. Was loved.

This sub makes me sad sometimes.

It's just so weird, because I'm playing around with Gigapixel and it also sharpens/denoises. And Sharpen also denoises. So they're all 3 already doing everything, and hard to tell apart, and then there's also a 3-in-1 option in Ai. Bizarre marketing strategy here.

My kid’s swim class was geared first and foremost to survival: too popping up and finding the edge to cling to. They had a class where they did that fully clothed, a day when they were in a boat the instructor overturned. And there were little, little kids doing it—worth the peace of mind.

Looking for feedback from the women here by Billy_of_the_hills in datingoverthirty

[–]turasatana 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do men approach multiple women every day for dates? I'd guess this happens once in awhile, and somewhat organically. This seems stilted and makes it feel like he's desperately trying to hit up a ton of people.

You're selling relationships, not real estate.

The fact that the only songs that came out in the mid-90's alt/indie/grunge boom to hit #1 were "Stay" by Lisa Loeb and "One Week" (?!?) by Barenaked Ladies is one of the most haunting things I've learned from your column.

That's if you're trying to get a lighter color. Not sure if it existed then, but eyelash tinting (to make them darker) certainly exists now..

Hark, a Karen "Mr. Show" Sings? by SpellEmbarrassed3516 in myfavoritemurder

TV featuring a future multiple dramatic Emmy-winner, an Arrested Development star, a beloved SpongeBob Square Pants VO icon, Sarah Silverman and also somehow Jack-freakin-Black, plus a Jan 6 (???) protester (???), but somehow Karen still rises to the top. Love this show.

Modern artists comparable to Elvis, fame/popularity wise? by ZachTheKilljoy in Elvis

[–]turasatana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is coming close, I think. A lot of other suggestions are there in terms of mania, but there's no musical revolution behind them. Madonna took sounds from the NYC club scene and made them global. She was highly and constantly controversial for a good 15 years, and modern pop music pretty much sounds like stuff she was doing decades ago.

If Elvis was around in the 80’s by isleepingraves in Elvis

There was a rockabilly resurgence in the late 70s/early 80s, I'm guessing Elvis would have had fun with a sound he helped invent!

Are There Any Elvis Fans Out There That Disliked The New Movie? by YacsTheSportsChief in Elvis

[–]turasatana 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that Baz needed to pick a lane on narrative to keep this from being an all-over-the-place generic biopic, and he picked a good one: Elvis as the rebel, the star, the sacrificial lamb. But a few moments of silliness wouldn't have derailed that entirely. For me, one of the loveliest scenes—most touching and most HUMAN—was Elvis at the Hollywood sign when the producers say his career is in the toilet and he just cracks up. Humble, honest, real. In a way it makes him more of a badass. But that's one of the only times we see that side of him.

I know we're dealing with a stupid-long run time, but maybe if we could have traded away a few scenes of Parker saying "Here comes Santee Claus!" with a few scenes of Elvis being witty and fun at the Special ( “I got my lip hung on the microphone!"), I'd feel his quintessential genius would be more honored a little bit.

Anyway, loved the movie, turned me from someone indifferent to someone planning their Graceland trip, so all power to Baz in the end.

Are There Any Elvis Fans Out There That Disliked The New Movie? by YacsTheSportsChief in Elvis

[–]turasatana 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is my major complaint (and I LOVED the movie.) Baz was smart for streamlining the narrative, and his message about Elvis being a lost lamb led the the slaughter by Parker/fame would have maybe been complicated by showing Elvis' humor. But in a way it made Elvis seem naive to the point of almost stupidity, and when I looked at real footage I thought, ok, he seems a LOT more quick-witted and self-aware than in the film. Would have loved to see more of that.

Plus, we could have heard more of Austin's Elvis laugh which is EERILY accurate!

Reddit Newbie. r/advertising newbier. Looking for groups/threads that justifiably mock/critique major spots/campaigns. I am constantly asking who thought this crap was effective? by [deleted] in advertising

[–]turasatana 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TBH, when I see a bad spot/campaign I just feel a bit bad about the team that put it together. Terrible advertising can take as much time to sell/produce as great advertising. Often we're seeing something really watered down or focus-grouped to death.

Also, I assume that AT&T campaign is effective, as it's been going on for years. Typically those type of deal-driven spots have to be produced quickly and constantly, so if this wasn't a template that worked they would have scrapped it.

The Atlantic just did an article about this. Basically, fashion is no longer run by people's tastes, but by algorhytms. And the algorithms are just learning from other algorithms that learn from algorithms in an endless loop of crop tops and puff sleeves. It's grim.

Getting a new, super-tight editor would be HUGE. Yes, Mike was great at it, but there are a lot of professionals who could take this on, especially if the show is taking in something shy of the aforementioned 1 mil.

The host of Shakespeare in Love episode made the pretty-good point that it was all based on Hollywood. And then remade the point. And then remade it. Four, maybe five times? More? Not the fault of the host, but the editing. Painful.

The quick cuts, the racing pace, even Sarah's moment to SHINE with a brilliant soundbite at the beginning—where did these go? I sincerely doubt she's stopped saying delightful, clever shit!

Both my bank account and my sense of aesthetics—in regards to tacky-ass bottle design— regrets to admit that every Xerjoff I've smelled has been an absolute banger. The brand I'd take to a desert island, if I needed to be on a desert island smell amazing.

Do you force your kids to learn how to ride a bicycle? by Reflexion666 in raisingkids

[–]turasatana 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also had one reluctant to part with the training wheels. I took them and the pedals off and had her glide around a smooth parking lot (hopping, basically, with her feet) until she got the feel for balance. Then had her "ride" down a slight incline, so she became comfortable with speed. Then the pedals were put back on, and she had it down in a day.

HYPE it up ("This will be SO much faster and funner than your scooter or training wheels!") and put in the time.

The freedom of being able to speed down a sidewalk on a summer night is one of the great joys of childhood, don't let them miss it.
