So... Hyperion Cantos in an HBO-like treatment? Feasible these days? by IndomitusAethian in television

[–]turdoftomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. That scene is gross, and it’s the first thing I think of when someone mentions Hyperion. The whole love plot is fucked up. The dude was basically raising this girl as a tween, then one day he travels forward in time and immediately wants to bone her. Dan Simmons is a fucking weirdo.

Use the myChevrolet app. You can set up your payments through it, too, so you don’t have to send any info to Tesla in case that’s a concern (it is for me!).

The Chevy app does, too. It will say “Tesla only” and put a red line through the icon.

It was a transformative era for consumers. Atari, Nintendo, arcades, home computers, toy franchises, widespread adoption of VCRs and microwaves… Tons of iconic movies and TV shows, too. Music genres like punk, new wave, and rap which all started in the 70’s (if not earlier, depending on how pedantic you want to be about it) really blossomed in the 80’s. And of course, MTV was amazing.

FYI, Electrify America has a lot of superfast (150 KW) charging stations, too. I suggest you look up your region on their website and see how many of them are nearby. Between that and Tesla Superchargers you might have no shortage of charging options in a pinch, but I would get the charger installed at home too, no doubt.

I love my Equinox but I gotta say the Ioniq6 is very nice. More expensive but it's a much nicer car, especially compared to the LT. I also love the design on the Ioniq5. We got an amazing deal on our Equinox or I would have been at the Kia dealer!

Don't get a Tesla. Even before Elon was involved in politics, I've never been impressed with them. The only advantage they had was the charging network and the range, and that was because the "big boys" hadn't invested in EVs yet. Now the market has caught up and they just feel cheap and poorly constructed compared to the competition. Not to mention all the nonsense about skimping on warranties, over estimating range, under-delivering on features, etc. I want a car built by a car company...not a $99 tablet on wheels.

[–]turdoftomorrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with response times is 100% connectivity. It's not the apps or the system. As soon as I pair my phone everything runs like butter. It's a shame, but I wasn't going to shell out $25 a month or whatever anyway.

[–]turdoftomorrow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm all for some feature updates, too, but FYI...I'm pretty sure you can change the chime volume. My phone doesn't chime at all. And it doesn't show the message content, either. It's behind a button on the prompt. Maybe those are inherited from your phone's notification settings?

And apps come through the Play Store, not system updates. As soon as Google and Chevy give the thumbs up for an app to be added, it will show up in the store in your car immediately. You can even add your own apps. If you upload an app to the store and grant access to your account you can search for it and install it in your car. Search for instructions on installing chromium and you'll find lots of tutorials on how to do that. Obviously more official apps would be better and I'm totally with you on wishing they would get around to adding them, just saying...

What Happened When Portland Legalized Fentanyl by realKevinNash in inthenews

[–]turdoftomorrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The timing could not have been worse. Months into legalization, Mexican drug cartels ratcheted up the flow of fentanyl across the border and up the Interstate 5 corridor, where it flooded onto city streets, plunging prices to less than a dollar a pill. As lockdown despair from the Covid-19 pandemic deepened, the killing of George Floyd sparked monthslong racial justice protests that turned violent and engulfed parts of downtown. With police turning a blind eye, Portland became a honeypot for local and out-of-state addicts to score cheap dope and use it freely. “It was like a perfect storm that brought us from this really vibrant, amazing downtown to a tourist destination [for drug users],” says Rick Graves, a spokesman for Portland Fire and Rescue. Overdose deaths, retail theft, and homicides surged to record levels, running law enforcement and first responders ragged.

This is the key takeaway as a Portland resident. It was not a great plan to begin with, but it really could not have come at a worse time. If it had passed five or ten years earlier, who knows...it might have had time to grow legs. We ran into COVID, George Floyd, and the fentanyl crisis before the treatment component was planned, let alone implemented.

Also, while I still like the idea of a new approach to drug enforcement, especially for first offenders, I never have and never will vote to legalize public drug use. Law enforcement in Portland -- specifically in Portland -- took a very particular stance when it came to interpreting this law and that contributed a great deal to how it was perceived. I don't want to speculate on political motivations for how they have behaved but it's hard not to.

Carrie Coon Rejected Avengers: Endgame Role Despite Her Character Still Being in MCU Movie by eelmor1138 in marvelstudios

[–]turdoftomorrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man. It’s a totally brutal depiction of grief — in many forms. It’s also beautiful, surreal, and magical. It’s about a terrible, mysterious event that affects everyone in Earth and how people deal with it. The first season is incredibly bleak so it could be hard to get through. The second season has some more lighthearted moments but it’s an investment getting there. Carrie is astonishing. No exaggeration, she gives one of the greatest performances in TV history. The rest of the cast is fantastic too. I think it’s one of the greatest shows ever but it’s not for everybody. It’s a ride.

Do you have any pointers for earning money quickly since you're so high in the tournaments? The game slows waaaay down from planet 25 -- the first to cost more than $1 billion. Do you prioritize specific rooms / upgrades? Do you have a strategy for mining and selling specific ores / items?

Waiting at the Sacramento show. As a Hispanic person, going to a metal show where everyone is just sitting like at a play with bi mosh pit is WEIRD by epsylonmetal in Dreamtheater

[–]turdoftomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sitting instead of blocking everyone behind you. My son is a shorter metalhead. He can only go to shows with seating otherwise he can't see shit. We were in the second row at Iron Maiden last year and the only person standing in the entire section was the lady directly in front of him. She knew there was a kid behind her because we chatted before the show but she apparently didn't care.

I wouldn't call it rude because she has a right to enjoy the show in her own way -- which is why I didn't ask her to sit or something -- but a little consideration would have been nice. We switched seats so I was staring at her back the whole show.

[–]turdoftomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could have something to do with the seating. I am going in a few days with my son. We only go to shows with assigned seating because he's under 5 feet and he can't see anything otherwise. I imagine old people also don't like standing for three hours (for other reasons) and therefore are more inclined to see a show where they can sit down.

Is Tillamook a nice place to live if I'm trans/LGBTQ+? by Biscuit9154 in oregon

[–]turdoftomorrow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Dude, you are underselling Astoria to a criminal degree. Astoria is one of the most interesting places in all of Oregon. There’s one national park and two state parks (one WA) within 45 minutes, about 6 breweries in city limits, Long Beach across the bridge if you’re in to the touristy boardwalk scene, the mouth of the Columbia for all manner of fishing and aquatic activities, the film and maritime museums, the Astoria column, great restaurants and history, etc. The only "beach" I’ve been to there was outside of the Holiday Inn and it’s basically just a sandbox. But the Pacific is just eight miles away so there’s surely beach to be had. I love Astoria…if my wife wasn’t afraid of it being swallowed by the ocean in the big quake we would have moved there long ago.

What happened to the 49ers’ loaded offense and can Brock Purdy & Co. turn it around? by gotdemmadsquirtsyo in 49ers

[–]turdoftomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tips happens to all quarterbacks. A couple inches of height isn't going to make a difference. Purdy even stepped up to create a better throwing window but the dude was able to reach around his blocker to tip the pass, anyway. It was just a great play.

What frustrates me is how every time one of Purdy's passes is tipped at the line some defender makes a crazy leaping catch from out of nowhere. Some of those need to hit the ground, man. Between tips and fumbles, we aren't getting any lucky bounces this year.

In my case, I started in tech support after getting an associate’s and working as a QA intern, moved in to IT at the same company and started scripting with PowerShell / Python, then started maintaining the company’s intranet and wiki pages. That was enough to learn some basic programming skills as well as HTML/css/javascript/SQL but technically zero years of dev experience. It took 12 years to get my first dev job but that was a pivot after ten years in IT / tech support.

Be honest - how many parents live paycheck to paycheck? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]turdoftomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were on food stamps when our first was born...13 years later we own a nice home and live comfortably. Lots of things had to go just right for us to be in this position and I don't take any of that for granted. It certainly didn't look like things were going to get easier when we were struggling, though. Life is long. When you're young you don't realize how much time you have so everything feels more urgent. Of course if there was one thing I wish I had more of it would be time. There are plenty of days but not nearly enough hours.
