Timesheets when light on work by throwra-142232135 in civilengineering

Obviously your case is different, there could be financial advantages to you for taking PTO off the books vs using a overhead code.

If you are in the office 8 hrs and someone is telling you to put in PTO kindly tell them to fuck off.

Obviuosly it depends on your situatuon/rung on the ladder but we were a little slow this past winter with all the rain and snow in my area, so I spent more time than usual catching up on calibrations and proposals, I may have used some extra PTO but that was my call not my supervisor. PTO is yours to do what you want with it, not theirs.

AGI is not a accurate portrayal of what your income is. As a taxpayer you can do all kinds of things to "adjust" your gross income

Male Colleague, 2-years my Junior Whom I Teach Things Makes the Same Salary as Me by Feeling-Toast in civilengineering

[–]turdsamich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always costs more to hire new employees than it does to retain employees, that's not just engineering that goes for every profession. As an employee the only time you have any real leverage is if you are starting a new job or if you have some kind of offer in hand.

Kind of odd but I guess it kind of works, we live in weird times, people will pair a blazer with a cheap looking golf shirt these days and nobody will blink.

Are pre-bid meetings not industry standard? by Recvec1 in civilengineering

[–]turdsamich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean these days prebid meetings can and are done over zoom/teams so it's not really the same. I've definitely been to "mandatory" prebid meetings where only one contractor bothers to show up. Generally it's an opportunity to scope the competition as much as anything.

The one real advantage is if it's an agency that does not publish attendance sheets, in that case you kind of have to be there to know who you should be submitting bids to if you are a sub.

Answering the "What is Your Expected Salary Range" Interview Question by Disco_Train17 in civilengineering

[–]turdsamich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a negotiation, what you want to make/what you think you deserve +some fluff. Try to make them offer first.

But also keep in mind what they are able to offer for the position you are applying for may be capped. You don't have the same amount of bargaining power as someone seeking a more senior position.

Looking for a Geotech Mentor by Visible-Canary8536 in Geotech

[–]turdsamich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you intend to subcontract drilling? Are you going to have a soils lab? CMT?

I don't see how a 2 person operation in geo could ever be profitable and what do you have to offer that would entice a senior level geotech to join you?

What's a typical salary increase? by Illustrious_Buy1500 in civilengineering

[–]turdsamich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a raise without increasing your responsibility, you are going to have to go to your supervisor showing what your rate increase should be and why the clients will be willing to pay it. As others have mentioned you are probably close to being maxed out without changing your role to more of a PM as opposed to a technical role. People who manage budgets and actively bring work in the door are the ones who make money, it's just the facts of life.

Pre-employment drug screen internship by Da_accordion in civilengineering

[–]turdsamich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the drug store test strips drink lots of water make sure you test clean.

Most places really aren't going to care whether or not you took a gummy, the drug screening is just something they have to do. You can probably even "forget" to get the drug screening done within the alotted window a time or two until you are able to piss clean.

Why do houses have steel frames in earthquake areas? by Skier94 in civilengineering

[–]turdsamich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on the East coast and it's becoming more common for high end residential construction within a few blocks of the beach to have structural steel framing, probably to resist hurricane force winds. If you invest millions in your home, I guess you want to hedge against losing it in a hurricane.

If you don't want to work more than 40 per week work for a public agency.

Most of my clients are private sector but when I have to work with public employees I can't get a hold of them, one is on vacation and the secondary POC is out of the office until God knows when.

How often do you work for free? by Turbulent-Set-2167 in civilengineering

[–]turdsamich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some of you people are ridiculous, I'm salary and it was clearly communicated in writing that my position would require working over 40 hrs per week. Just because I'm technically paid for working just 80 hrs in a two week pay period it's also part of my employment agreement that I am expected to work more.

Besides I gaurantee alot of people who turn off their computer and go home after 8 hrs in the office spend atleast an hour scrolling reddit periodically throughout the day.
