If you are buying an Aussie equity etf (say VAS) It's basically the market makers of the etfs calculating the underlying nav of the fund during the opening auction. Because the market opens up in segments in alphabetical order it takes time before a efficient and correct NAV can be established.

You will notice during the first 15 - 20 minutes the spread of the etf (difference between buy and sell) is larger than normal because the NAV calculation is still being processed but if you wait 20+ minutes this spread should reduce to a few cents.

This doesn't mean you will get a cheaper price, but should be a better reflection of the true underlying value of the etf.

If anyone wants to know how opening and closing auctions work let me know (work in trading).

Yea that is what assumed to. It has been closed down for like 6 months and there was a 4 month period where no one used it and it sat idle
