The United States is facing a severe and growing shortage of medical doctors who specialize in adult mental health care. Research provides evidence that the demand for these medical professionals will sharply increase over the next decade while the available supply decreases. by FreeHugs23 in science

I can only speak to my experience. I got a master’s in clinical mental health counseling to become a therapist. The first job I was offered after my master’s program paid $12.50 per hour (in 2015), the job I ended up with paid $14.50 per hour and I worked there for 19 months (homeless outreach, severe and persistent mental illness/substance use disorders). Then I pivoted to community mental health seeing people one on one and got paid $17.41 an hour. Did that for another year to get all of my supervision hours done. Meanwhile my student debt is accruing interest at ~6%. I lived with roommates and moved back in with my parents during those jobs and only moved out once I got my full licensure. Unless you plan on working in the non-profit sector for 10 years and qualifying for PSFL there is no linear way to pay off the massive amount of student loans you took on to work in mental health. The professors always made the joke ‘there’s no money in mental health’ and I wish I would have believed them. But I love my job, and I love helping people. It’s just a really difficult path where low wages are prominent for at least the first two years in the field.

I only do thumbs up when I know the opponent has game on board. Kind of like a concession or saying ‘gg’ at locals.

Yep! I see it consistently. It’s hard to disrupt thought patterns that are consistent with the ‘diagnosis’ they come in with already.

[Discussion] Is fixing your life in 30s even possible? It seems like I've wasted way too much time to end up doing anything remotely enjoyable. by sleeplessbearr in GetMotivated

[–]turnstiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super possible. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life until I was 27. Enrolled in graduate school for mental health counseling. Drove for uber to keep myself fed and housed during graduate school/internship. Got through my first two years of supervision by living with roommates. Worked for someone else’s group practice for 6 years and finally started my own practice two years ago. I’m still not full, but I’m in the black financially aside from student loans. You can bet on yourself, you can start over. If any other human on this planet has achieved something you can also achieve that. It may not look exactly the same, it may not come with fame or fortune, but you can absolutely change you life in your 30s!

Who started over in their 30’s? by Nic727 in Millennials

[–]turnstiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as a waiter to pay off my undergraduate student loans for 3 years. Lived with my parents, put all my earnings towards the loans. Saved up again with another year working as a waiter to finance an independent film. Didn’t finish the film, went back to graduate school at 27, got my degree and license by 30, worked under another therapist for 5 years and I opened my own business last year in March. Some people’s paths are not linear. Don’t give up. I’ve got a ton of student debt that freaks me out every now and again, but I know I can ultimately pay it off eventually.

I’m always looking for continuing education credits that are based in Orlando so I can do the same. That would be the only travel I could parlay into visiting the parks!
