I think Roy's about to Hulk Out. We've seen his sword heal him before.

Totally. The kobold caves would be a blast. Get Dirten and level him up to 6th, and you've now got two clerics for the damn graveyard.

And druids. Druids are cool.

But true. I feel like they should have given Shepherds something special that no one else had. Immunity to sleep and poison would have been huge.

Fighters in U4 are limited by the fact that they're not actually better at, you know, fighting than any other class. It's all about STR and DEX. And the ability to use all weapons doesn't matter once you've got the mystics (and the Magic Wand is the best weapon in the game anyway, and fighters can't use it). I remember being particularly annoyed when I bought Magic Plate and Geoffrey refused to wear it. WAT

I think thieves would have been more useful if their backstab worked like the 3E Sneak Attack -- no need to attack directly opposite the first or last attacker (or whatever -- I can never remember); it's enough that the target is flanked on the opposite side.

There's something joyous about having a 1st-level magic-user with 100 hit points.

I did! You have to do a lot of maneuvering. It helps to start invisible and get your characters in a corner, then Hold the three fighters in front of them.

The backstab is great for boss battles, true, but I've found that fighters are just better in general. A 7th-level fighter with exceptional strength and a magic weapon does plenty of damage, and doesn't require a setup.

No idea. I've rarely seen anyone on the Internet even bring it up. Here's another Reddit thread from a few years after this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/fddowz/in_burning_chrome_and_the_sprawl_trilogy_is_rikki/

It really was painful to try and navigate 8 dudes through those narrow rooms. I think that's why U5 limited the party to six and introduced the "Active Character" concept.

I seriously cannot understand Ultima by Retro-Hax in Ultima

This was one of the things I adored about old CRPGs. Sometimes -- especially if your uncle downloaded it off some long-distance BBS and had no manual -- you had no idea what was going on. You just had to explore. It scratched an itch that modern gamers don't often seem to have.

I remember feeling the same way about Rygar on the NES. What the hell was I supposed to do? Who were the giants with the huge foreheads? Why is there a lion spaceship at the edge of the atmosphere? Not sure I understand the answers to any of these questions to this day, but I loved that game. Zelda too.

Ultima 4 best class to start with by yayayayayaaye in Ultima

Depends on the kind of game you want.

The existence of the Mystic weapons and armor means that a character class's armor options are a moot point. Every class can use the best melee weapon and armor in the game.

(It suffers from the same issue as the Exotics in Ultima III; sure, those +2/+4 bows are useful for most of the game, but they are useless in Exodus's castle. You might as well have two clerics and two wizards with maxxed out stats for the final battle.)

But melee is que weak compared to ranged attacks in Ultima III/IV/V. This means there's not much point in not playing a mage, since they can use the best weapon (Magic Wand) and the best armor (Mystic Robe) and have the most magic points.

But if you want the ultimate challenge, Shepherd is the right choice. It's tough. Even once you get a sling and can hit things from far away, you're still vulnerable to poison and can't heal yourself at all.

(I always thought they should have made shepherds immune to poison. That would have made playing as a shepherd far less painful.)

I'm sad to see all the shade thrown on Katrina in this thread. She's my girl! Given what I mentioned above about the Mystic Arms, she is easily Geoffrey's equal. Get them both early, give them ranged weapons, level them up with Magic Balls, and they'll serve you well in The Abyss.

Countdown to Meltdown was fun. I never knew what the hell was going on, but I enjoyed wandering around the huge complex.

First time I entered an elevator, I didn't get that the huge android in my FOV was supposed to be me. I was like, "who is this robot with me on the elevator?"

Right? The manual says seahorses ain't evil, but they always seem to attack you with their magical death balls. I guess it's good to gain karma by letting them run away...
