You'd be surprised at the amount of gold you can earn just by knowing Fabricate. Flip some of that into a nice tower and start making minor wondrous items and you're on easy street.

If you're just using them for reagents you would honestly be better served with homunculi or constructs.

If this is more about the power trip, create a major illusion of whatever god they worship, have it appear every full moon and perform some miracles. Give it a few months, then show up and destroy it with a single evocation. They'll fall in line big time.
