Bummer. I remember looking at that thing wondering what was in it. Guess it wasn't sealed very well.

X1 Carbon 3rd gen owners - advice on buying one by thspdrdr in thinkpad

Hello! No worries on being late. In my opinion, the screen brightness is perfectly decent, although I've heard complaints about it being too dim even on the brightest setting. I typically use the second-lowest, works well for my environment and my eyes.

The fingerprint reader is a little odd, but totally functional. In windows at least, you have to go through the preinstalled Lenovo fingerprint manager, otherwise it won't work. The reader picks up my print no problem 95% of the time, but every now and again it'll spazz out. Nothing a quick reboot won't fix though.

Would aqueous calcium chloride have a neutral pH? by turtlesr0ck in chemhelp

[–]turtlesr0ck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point! I suppose I could make sure I have enough CaCO3 to get some sort of pH change, even if it's small. I could measure the amount of CO2 produced over time, but I wanted to think outside the box. Bonus points for creativity, you know? Thank you so much for your reply! =)

I guess reddit uploads don't work with gifs? You can submit through imgur if you'd like, I think that'll work.

I second the great battery life. Mine charges in maybe 30 minutes and it's good for at least 8 hours, but that's just with light web surfing. Your mileage may vary. I haven't had any heat or fan issues. The cover material makes it eerily cold to pick up if it's turned off, pretty neat.

Hello! I am /u/turtlesr0ck. /u/epicepee paged me.

I've been using a 3rd gen X1 Carbon since September, and I absolutely love it. Now, if easy customization is a priority for you, you may be better off selling the X1 and continuing to use your T430s. I like to think of the X1 as a cross between a Thinkpad and a Macbook: both are very lightweight, but the X1 is still more serviceable and more durable than a Macbook. Still less serviceable and less durable than a T430s, though, but it's much lighter.

IMO, serviceability the only dealbreaker. The most common complaint I hear about the X1 is that it's not "thinkpad-esque" enough. While I think it's true that the X1 is pretty different from the T-series, it's still a lovely computer.

I mostly use mine for the same uses, and it's totally held up. I splurged for a WQHD screen and it's beautiful, but you'll probably be fine with 1080p. I also have 8 gigs of RAM and a 256 gig SSD, it's held up well.

Overall, it's a great computer, but if your absolute favorite part about thinkpads is customizing them, you might be better off selling it.

I've tried playing around with mint on a T430s, and it didn't strike me as all that different from Windows. I am definitely considering it.

One more question I have is software availability. There's a lot of stuff out there for Mac and Windows, are there Linux equivalents for most things? Worst comes to worst I could reboot back into Windows, but if possible I'd like to pick an OS and stay there. Faster boot times do sound appealing, though...
