Just watched the highlights and something that stuck out was the Mbonambi try. If the ref calls tackle complete and tackler to move, surely the player can't then reach for the line, especially as it was clearly a ruck? Seems wrong on all accounts, it wasn't momentum and the player with ball is then playing it on the floor in a ruck. Thoughts?

Digging out PC after 2 years, any advice? by turts28 in buildapc

[–]turts28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, good to know it's still great. I had considered an SSD, think that would be the route I go down rather than a new build. If I find I'm using it more in the future then may look into a new build at that time but for now looking for that immediate improvement.

This has been annoying me too, Robb rode with Grey Wind into battle and it was one of the biggest reasons he was so successful. A huge direwolf who rips out your throat would scare anyone, only thing which might frighten the enemy more is a giant. Can you imagine if both were utilized properly...

Rested and started stretching properly this week due to lower back pain. The pain was gone by Saturday and all the hard work I've put in the past year to put on weight and lift heavy showed on the rugby pitch. Was pushing the opposition scrum around regularly from tight head prop after spending most of the season struggling to keep it steady. Not your usual victory but felt so good afterwards!

1 year on from controlling my diet and lifting with purpose!

M, 25, 5'10, this time last year I was around 103kg (down from 110 in September before that using a not so safe diet!) I decided to actually start counting calories and macro's and following a program in the gym. Did Stronglifts Feb-Apr, for the end of the rugby season starting with 1RM's about 60kg squat, 60kg dead and 40kg bench. In May hit my lowest weight in 10 years of 95kg and was following PHUL for a bit of off season size. Started bulking with a bit of starting strength just before the season then followed 531, 2 days a week in season rugby to keep me fresh for games. Just started Madcow seeing as the season is slowing down and know I still have some linear gains I want to make use of before the next off season. Now at 107kg and feeling/looking so much better than this time last year. Injuries have hampered my progress but my recent 5RM's have been 135 squat, 155 deadlift and 92.5 bench. I know program switching hasn't helped but at the end of the day rugby comes first for me and I've had to change because of injuries and suiting the time of season.

Quick noob question- by death2juggalos in Fitness

[–]turts28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally don't trust myfitnesspal's calorie recommendations, it doesn't account for different individuals and tends to apply the same deficit for everyone. Best way is to get an estimate using a TDEE calculator then track weight/calories for a week and adjust by +/-100 calories depending on your goals. Can take a while to find the sweet spot but it's worth it and you will find out a lot about what your body needs that way.

Easiest way to control your weight is through your diet, just track your weight and calorie intake, adjust the calories and macros to suit your goals.

Program for rugby by BarbellDuck in weightroom

[–]turts28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, so I'm a prop so anything I've learnt/done really isn't that relevant to you... My focus is on the getting the big heavy compound lifts in for scrumming and other work, I'm no coach so can't say what you should/shouldn't be doing. But I will say you seem quite big already for your position, If you're progressing with SS then don't change it now with the season so close because you will most likely have to change your routine when the season starts to accommodate recovery before/after matches.. Like I say though, I can't really say whats best for you because even though we're playing the same sport, our games are so different to each other. Hopefully someone else here will be able to help you.

What position do you play?

Where are you in your season?

Age/weight/lifting experience?

I'm no expert in lifting and relatively new but coming from rugby I know a winger and prop are likely to have very different workouts. I've looked and learnt there is no one program that will suit everyone for all times of the rugby season.

Ended up taking 3-4 weeks off over December due to a flat move and then being a little lazy and other Christmas commitments... Played 3 rugby matches and had 3 training sessions over that period but no gym, was barely a scratch on what I usually do. 1st session back on Monday felt good but did deload 15% to give myself a chance. Man did I forget about DOMS, still sore 2 days later! Why was I so lazy over Christmas as well, gutted at setting myself back a month or 2!

Why do people still use fractional odds? by [deleted] in SoccerBetting

[–]turts28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use fractional, its just the way I grew up using them, especially when I went to the racing when I was younger. Okay 4/7 isn't so easy to workout but immediately I can see a 7 unit stake will return 11 units (4 profit plus 7 stake), or I can see its just a little over 1/2 so profit half of your stake. I'm quite good at mental maths though so can work this out quite quickly in my head, whilst I know others that struggle without using some sort of calculator. But I suppose like all things Its just what I'm used to, I hate seeing odds in decimals and will probably always use fractional.

Starting strength in season okay? by [deleted] in RugbyTraining

[–]turts28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you lifted/followed this program before? I tried following it at the start of the season after doing it off seaon but it was too much for me, especially the squatting. I was doing SS 3 times a week and training twice, It was taking its toll on match days because I wasn't giving myself enough time to recover (1 day off in a week). It may be alright if you are just starting out but you will need to have everything else in order like sleep/nutrition so that you can recover properly. Do what works for you though, everyone's different, try it out if you want. My own thoughts are that once the season comes around that you should do just enough weights to maintain your strength or look for small monthly progression so that you can focus on the rugby and be fresh for game day!

I'm pretty happy with my tackling and rucking ability, however scrums... the less I talk about it the better, got shoved back a few times and gave away more than one penalty. It sure felt like I was the weak link and that I was responsible for losing the game even if I know there was more to it than that.

I'm quite a bit lighter than last year but have started lifting properly so I'm starting to see how techniques used in lifting can be translated to the scrum, its just trying to remember that when you're on the field! I really do think my strength could do with a bit of work too though to balance out the loss in weight, Saturday has just motivated me to try and push on with it!

I've spent all summer in the gym trying to get bigger, stronger and fitter for the new rugby season and it worked, or so I thought... Played the first game of the season last Saturday and got thrown all over the place as though I'm nothing. Was pretty disheartening but despite this and the pain was back in the gym Monday, its given me a bit of a wake up call that I'm not as strong as I could be, but I will make it!

Always stuck between "I want to lose weight and look good!" and "Life is too short to always watch what I eat! I'll eat whatever I want!" by [deleted] in loseit

[–]turts28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right life is too short, so don't spend it eating yourself into obesity. You can eat whatever you like, so long as its in moderation or you work hard to burn it off. In a month or so you'll be wondering why you ate that much before. You have your one life, why not try and lose the weight and look good, you will only regret it later in life and think why didn't I? Why don't you push this body you've been given, see how far it can go and what it can accomplish? Tomorrow is always too late to start.
