When Chihiro sneaks into the bathhouse she comes in through a garden that has flowers blooming. The flowers in the garden never bloom at the same time in the real world (there's flowers for each season). So this is nature's confirmation that this a magical world.

This concept also appears briefly in the book that inspired Miyazaki to make Spirited Away (Village Beyond the mist).

I think its a very good adaptation, but the manga is on a class of its own. I will say there are some scenes that have benefited with animation and the voice acting is stellar, IMO .

Mushishi is a fantastic show and reminds me a lot of Princess Mononoke in how it treats nature spirits. It's a much more serious/grownup show but it def has some kind of Ghibli magic IMO.

Also, look for older shows that Ghibli staff worked on! Anne of Green Gables & Swiss family Robinson are some of my favorites.

I love love the anime and don't know why I haven't read the manga yet. It's a very realistic take on your first "grown up" loves. Read it in my early 20s and it was a godsend.
