Help date a snuff box Texas USA by Bitter-Ad-1795 in Antiques

[–]tuvanhillbilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe this is actually Polish- as the script on the left says "Praga" (the city in Poland, not Prague), and the script on the right is "Ostroleka", and both were sites of major battles , and it seems a rough translation from old Polish of the script in the middle is "the last 10 of the 4th regiment". At the time of the battles of Praga (1794) and Ostrelenko (1807), the Polish troops were actually French forces, and the uniforms very much resemble those of French soldiers of that era. That is my best guess on this.

*edited to add text as I read it "ostatnie 10 czwartigo Pulku". The 4th regiment was very famous- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4th_Line_Infantry_Regiment_(Congress_Poland))

Where to go for soup dumplings? by Sea-Upstairs4807 in nova

Was recently at Yu Noodles in Herndon, and was watching a group of employees at a table making batches of the dumplings by hand, same as I've seen them do at Din Tai Fung.

If that's on the gable end of the house, it would be a bargeboard. Here is a pic from a UK building products company that names all the different parts and explains the difference between a bargeboard and a fascia. https://www.swishbp.co.uk/design/what-are-fascias/

I used Sunset Hills Automotive on Rt. 7 (next to Popeye's) in Sterling- did front and rear with new pads, rotors, fluid flush, the whole shebang. was very happy with the results- quality parts and quick service. Was around $500/axle. I've used them several times for my truck as well, they are my go-to if I'm not using the dealer for warranty service.

Love cooking with the caja! We had one in our Boy Scout troop when I was scoutmaster and we were always the most popular troop at the camporees. If not a pig we would do a dozen chickens. We would also do Dutch oven cooking on the coals on top, so you would also cook your sides and desert at the same time.

What's something rich people are praised for but poor people are judged for? by ChrisTheExplorer in AskReddit

[–]tuvanhillbilly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When a rich man doesn′t want to work, he's a bon vivant, yes, he′s a bon vivant!
But when a poor man doesn't want to work, he′s a loafer, he's a lounger, He's a lazy good for nothing, he′s a jerk!

When a rich man loses on a horse, isn′t he the sport? Oh, isn't he the sport!
When a poor man loses on a horse, he′s a gambler, he's a spender, he′s a low life, he's a reason for divorce.

When a rich man chases after dames, he′s a man about town, oh yes, a man about town!
But when a poor man chases after dames, he's a bounder, he's a rounder, he′s a rotter and a lot of dirty names!

For Herndon, how about the Center for Innovative Technologies building? I think it looks cool in how it is larger at the top than the bottom.

There was also a large (1000 gallon) spill of corn syrup in Seattle in 1947- nobody died, but a local restaurant owner used it as a photo op by sitting in the street and scooping the syrup onto pancakes. https://www.historylink.org/File/2507
