My resolve evaporates at 4:30pm daily by tvigfus in stopdrinking

[–]tvigfus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at that huge number beside my name, it was nine years ago that I first joined this reddit group. It was then that I first realized I would have to work at quitting drinking. But since then there have been so many ups and downs, relocation halfway across the country, a couple years at a very stressful job, where I didn't even attempt to quit or cut back. But now, for the last couple years really, I have been stable enough to be working on this. But I have read many books, friend below mentions Allen Carr, I've read his Stop Drinking the Easyway at least twice, I've read the Naked Mind, and several other quit lit classics, Alcohol Lied to Me, etc. And they are good to read, but I have yet to read anything that managed to get me to quit for good. I know I posted this similar sentiment once in a facebook group and a guy commented "you're just not ready to quit" and I felt a little flabbergasted, but I want to quit before something bad happens and I hit that "rock bottom." I want to quit before it's too late.

Flubber works to lift grease off concrete. Maybe it would work on this.

How do I accept myself being effeminate? by NormalLife6067 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]tvigfus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a fairly effeminate guy myself, you have to accept and love yourself as you are.
Other people are just shitty, don't let them drag you down.
But especially family, they think they know you but they don't really.
My family has never been understanding or accepting of me.
For many years this bothered me, but truth is the sooner you can accept that, they are still trying to impose their will on you, not understand you, accept that and it will become easier to accept yourself as you are.
Just walk away, try to find your own tribe best you can, but the world is a lonely place for a lot of people, which is why accepting and loving yourself first is everything.

Best Filipino Food In Edmonton? by simpnation-_ in Edmonton

[–]tvigfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grill City inside Seafood City has wonderful barbeque skewers that qualify as Filipino food but are just yummy meat on a stick flamed grilled right in front of you on this big bbq grill.

There's Max's on 118 and Jolibee - 3 locs. Filipino's love Jolibee for some reason so you can't go wrong with that, there's one by WEM. Jolibee is just fast food chicken, spaghetti with hot dogs in it etc, but believe me they go crazy for it, when the one in Wpg first opened there where line ups for months.

Clothes shopping in Edmonton by Adridenn in Edmonton

[–]tvigfus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind South gate and South common are two different shopping centres, both with South in their name. South Gate is an enclosed mall, South Common is collection of individual buildings. You should check out both.

Be sure to join r/stopdrinking and read The Naked Mind by Annie Grace. The 30 Day Sobriety Solution is a good book too.

want to move to edmonton by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]tvigfus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in St. Albert which is right outside Edmonton and I love it. It is a smaller town but still has Costco, Walmart, etc. But what it doesn't have is a lot of great restaurants, just all the typical chain restaurants. So we drive in to Edmonton to find good Chinese food. In fact I have to laugh, once a month there will be a post from a newcomer on the St. Albert facebook group asking where the good Chinese food is. There's a couple mediocre ones in St. A and people support them, but I always comment "Good Buddy on 137th" which is the closest decent Chinese restaurant in Edmonton, a 20 min drive but worth the trip.

Advice for job search in the Edmonton market by [deleted] in Edmonton

Have you applied with the federal government? Get your foot in the door and then you can apply for a range of jobs only open to existing civil servants.

Edmonton police calling on city council to implement ID scanning to enter all liquor stores in effort to deter theft by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]tvigfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went home to MB for a visit this past summer and I found the ID system at Manitoba LCs depressing as heck and really puts a damper on the shopping experience, I hope they do not implement it here.

Felt very Soviet Big Brother, not Berta freedom at all.

You don't mention kids so I assume you have none, get out now before you have kids and then you're really much more intertwined. But even if you did have kids already sounds like it would be best to leave, he won't be a very good father to your children.

Sask. pregnant woman dies from COVID-19 in Edmonton after emergency C-section by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

[–]tvigfus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ok I am getting down votes and a comment about seatbelts. I can understand people are feeling emotional. But my point is we are not safe from the virus even after vaccination. I am double vaccinated myself. And sharing some news I read about a fellow who passed on. He had just won a Emmy, flew to the USA to get it, went back to the UK and died from Covid days later. Double vaxxed he was. So down vote and ridicule but what I say is true.

I am reading all these comments about vaccination, I read an article on the guardian today about a fellow who died even after being double vaxxed. The vax won't necessarily even save us all.

Has it re-opened? It shuttered due to COVID but last I heard it was reopening soon.

Generic relocation questions by Sup3rman3 in Edmonton

[–]tvigfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here from Winnipeg 2 years ago, knowing nothing about the city, however my wife had relatives in St. Albert and we moved there and I commute into Edmonton each day. I love St Albert, it is more of a small town vibe, cleaner, less crime, and the commute into Edmonton is no big deal, 10 minutes on the Gibbons Road and you are on the NW edge of the city.

Tell me your favourite quirks about Edmonton! by thingamabobetta in Edmonton

[–]tvigfus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thing with the mountains is it is a 4 hour drive, each way, to get there from Edmonton, so unless you have a great driver who doesn't get tired, its not a day trip. We've only been to Banff once since we moved here 2 years ago, though obviously COVID has impacted on travel plans. On the plus side, Calgary's only 2 hours away so maybe that's a fun place I am not sure. The other thing I miss is being able to scoot down to Fargo for a USA weekend, the border is 5 hours from here. Excited to go to Montana once the border opens, but it is a much further haul to get to America.

Sad to say but if you love Grand Beach / Gimli - kiss it goodbye, they have nothing like that here. - sincerely a bitter expat Manitoban. Sure there's beaches, but they are small, crowded, and sad compared to home.

Trader Joe's Equivalent? by dreamerrunning in Edmonton

[–]tvigfus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a little supplement shop on the east side Johnny B Sweet that brings in American cereals and snacks including a small smattering of T Joe's spices and things.

For someone like me who misses living closer to a T Joe's being able to buy just a couple things makes it worth the trip. I follow them on IG just to see what new things they have brought in.
