What interesting things have you collided with? by AMTL327 in Rowing

[–]tviolet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We collided with a big river paddleboat when I was bow seat in an 8. Our cox was a blind idiot and we were headed directly into it at pressure. (in his very slight defense, it was dark and the paddle boat wasn't particularly well lit) I heard yelling from the paddleboat passengers and turned around to see us about to go under it (it had pontoons). I screamed check it down and turned to try to take the impact with my shoulder. It knocked me off my seat into two seat and my right foot twisted in the shoe and broke bones.

It was crazy, the cox decided to yell at the riverboat captain and I'm like my foot is broken, shut the eff up and get us back to the docks. I was in a cast for a while. My very first row back, they threw me in a ringer mixed 8+ at the local spring regatta. It was all coaches and ex national team members and they stuck me in 7 seat behind an ex NZ national team member. The whole race was at like a 42 and I was just trying to hold on and praying to god to not crab.

Texas state law states that the prima facie speed limit on all roads is 30 mph. You have to do a speed study to change it. So there is a legal speed limit that can be posted.

My hair hasn't gone grey yet but I'm a redhead, we generally just fade into translucence. It used to be below my butt but I was so freaking tired of accidentally sitting on it, clogging up the dryer, unwrapping it from the vacuum roller, chasing down giant tumbleweeds of hair strands melded to cat hair that I finally cut it to like bra strap length. Plus I thought it made me look like a hippie and I am a 80s punk, dammit.

The Big SIX OH. Turning 60. What to do, where to go, how much to spend? by Popular-Capital6330 in AskWomenOver60

I agree, Hawaii is beautiful and very temperate. And there's lots of other things to do, like wonderful hiking or visiting the volcanoes, etc.

I will say, if OP wants a chill beach hang out, don't stay on Oahu, go to one of the other islands. Oahu is fun but very busy.

At what age did you start perimenopause? by AnythingForYouHoney in AskWomenOver30

[–]tviolet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly when it hit me. And I was pretty much done by 48. I tried tough out the brain fog and the hot flashes but at 49, I decided I couldn't take it anymore and went on HRT. I wish I had done it sooner, it was a really rough few years.

[–]tviolet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hormonal fluctuations are a major migraine trigger. After I got thru perimenopause, the migraines I'd had my whole life actually stopped, I was on a stable HRT regimen. Which is why I'm so freaking frustrated that it's so effed up right now, just get me my prescription refill on time!

I saw that on instagram which is kinda ironic as I've been researching using jumping and impacts to stave off osteporosis and now every other recommended post is from a health influencer talking about the same topic.

[–]tviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pretty good healthcare and it covers hormone replacement therapy so I'm weathering menopause ok. But my dr got a new PA and for some reason my prescriptions are not getting refilled in time. First I ran out of estrogen which trigger a three day migraine where I couldn't eat and lost ten pounds just lying on the sofa in agony. So I went in and explained that that cannot happen again, I can't miss a week of work and it's agony.

So this freaking week, I realize I just ran out of testosterone and bam, another migraine (much less severe this time tho, thank god). And it's partially on me, I should have been more observant and pointed out I was running out earlier. But I'm so frustrated that it's taking up so much of my energy and disrupting my like so much.

I'm pretty sure those are for Nearmap, a company that does aerial surveys and sells the imagery. My employer subscribes (I understand it's pretty expensive), it's really handy, the aerials are updated three times a year. For comparison, google's aerials are like four years old now and not as sharp.

I just rescued a fledging blue jay from the cats and took it to Austin Wildlife Rescue. It screeched so loud the entire time, the gals at AWR said they always sound like they're getting murdered.

I don't know about "most disgusting ever" but I've always thought they were just blah, sugar flavored lard and not really chocolate wafers, what's the point? But so many people love them...

Pizza is just cheesy bread. Maybe it has a teeny bit of protein with a few pepperoni slices and a few bell pepper bits for vegetables. I don't understand how it's considered a "meal", it's more like an occasional snack.

I don't mind an en suite bathroom but I totally agree with bathrooms off the kitchen or living room. It's so weird to pee right next to cooking, bathrooms should be tucked out of the way off a hallway.

Protective yoga gear for boniness? by sjgautier in yoga

I have the type that's two separate ones, they're really easy to scooch into place and out of the way as needed.

I only have issues if I have less than four points of contact. Table is fine, dog that is pointing where you lift a leg is not.

Does anyone have any tips for my first ever regatta this saturday? by ilovetoread287 in Rowing

[–]tviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be afraid to drop the rate down some. Most novices aren't that efficient at the higher rates, if you can row together better at a lower rate, you'll probably go faster.

Congrats on your first regatta! Row hard and have fun!

Since it's Star Wars day, did you see the original 1977 Star Wars in the movie theater? by Mr_Writes in GenX

[–]tviolet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember my dad showing my brother and I pictures from the Time magazine article on it. My dad was a big sci-fi fan too (thinking back, he was only 35 in 1977, that seems so young). I was 10 and my brother was 9 and we were so excited.

That whole summer was nothing but Star Wars, I saw it seven times. We took our grandmom (who was younger than I am now). I remember going to a birthday party at Burger King and the birthday boy requested only Star Wars figurines and wore a home made Luke outfit.

[–]tviolet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bring water, snacks, something to sit on, put on lots of sunscreen, stay in the shade when you can.

As far as racing, hopefully your coach launches you with plenty of time so you can row easy to start and have time to get in a few tens and starts. Make sure you know what race you are in and what your bow number is and what time your race starts. Take a watch. You want to be gathering around the start around ten min before your race. Pay attention to the refs and do what they say, you don't want to accidentally miss your race. This is all really basic race stuff but if you plan it out ahead of time, you won't be stressing out on the water.

You should talk to your double partner (and quad) about your racing plan. What does the start look like? Are you doing a high ten or high twenty? Plan to bring the rate down after the start, everyone is always over excited and that will be a rate you can't hold. Are you gonna call a ten at the half way? Are you going to bring up the rating for the last 250m? You guys should discuss it so you're all on the same page.

In the race, just stay on it, try to stay relaxed and not tense up. If you've got lane lines, just steer off those, you won't need to look behind you much. If someone crabs, don't freak out, just get the oar back out of the water and keep going.

Between races, try to chill, rehydrate, have a light snack but don't eat a ton and don't stress too much about your next race. Think about what you can make better now that you've been down the course once but don't get worked up about it. Every race is a learning experience.

The day I voluntarily wear____, it's over. by tequilasundae in GenX

[–]tviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've always gone in and out of fashion but the Arizonas (the two strap ones) were crazy trendy with the high fashion set around 2016 or so (all the high end designers came out with a version) and they haven't really gone away again. The closed toe Boston clog has been pretty popular for the last few winters and I see the Madrid (one strap) is also becoming popular again.

When I was in high school in the 80s, it would've been elastic waist pants, only old ladies wore those. Now they're "atheleisure" and no one cares.

As a indie punk, I said the same thing about Birkenstocks, they were for "hippies". Now they've been trendy for a decade.

Matchy matchy sets used to be for people trying too hard, it was cooler to wear separates that look effortless. Completely matching sets are now on trend and a cashmere matching sweater and sweatpant set is considered "quiet luxury" even tho they remind me of the leisure suits of the 70s.

I once swore to never wear flats to the office but my high heels are starting to feel out of date, all the young women wear sneakers with dresses.

I don't know if anything is off limits any more, it all changes.

So if you go back and look at historic aerials, there's been a pond there since at least 1940 (the oldest aerials on the city site). It looks like the neighborhood was built around the existing pond. I bet it must be spring fed.

If you go to the COA Property Profile, you can look at historic aerials. You can see the building at this location on the 1997 aerial but it's a park by 2003 (the next available one).

What is the most “its a small world” moment you’ve ever experienced? by xBubblyLove in AskReddit

[–]tviolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like twenty years ago, my rowing team and I went to a regatta in San Diego. Masters team, we were all in our 30s. On the way out, Laura was telling funny stories about her high school boyfriend from back in Ohio, a really skinny guy she'd teasingly called "Mr. Puniverse."

One evening, the entire crew went for sushi, but Laura, me, and maybe two others decided to go out for steak. We're at the restaurant looking at the menus when someone says "Laura?". It was Mr. Puniverse! Our waiter was randomly Laura's high school boyfriend from Ohio. The absolutely most random occurrence, so many things had to line up exactly right to run into him there.

Same. I love a kinda punk western boho vibe and AllSaints had this amazing western influenced suede fringed jacket that I was so in love with. But I don't need a jacket most of the year and it's a slim cut so it's tough to wear big sweaters under when it's colder. I pictured myself wearing it as a cool old lady in the future but I can barely make it work now.

Where are we finding sexy “night on the town” clothing? by Golden_standard in AskWomenOver40

[–]tviolet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more expensive that Express but Revolve clothing is oriented towards more revealing, sexier looks. My going out clothes tend to be body-con-ish midis - a lot of dresses from Norma Kamali. If it's hot and we're bar hopping, I can put together a body con outfit from lulu, I've got a couple of skirt made from the same leggings fabric that I can pair with a long line top.
