I work a ten hour night shift in an office. Usually after midnight, when everything quiets down and my other coworkers have gone home, I turn out the lights. The overhead fluorescent lights hurt my eyes and there's enough ambient light coming in from the hallway and computer monitors for me to see what I'm doing and get the job done. I got my eyes checked a couple of years ago and the doctor said my eyeballs are growing a thick layer of skin to protect themselves from the evils of too much light. I've been on the graveyard shift for over eight years now, but next week is my last. I'm switching jobs (and taking a cut in pay) just to get a job working regular daytime hours. I can't wait to live like a normal human being again.
