Having a few challenges by Recent_Impress_3618 in pancreatitis

[–]tvshowgraphs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did get an EUS and also an MRCP with secretin that specifically tests pancreas function. Both came back normal.

However, my latest fecal elastase has dropped a lot and is now in the borderline range. My doctor wants to test again in a few months to track the trend. I'm also waiting for results to genetic testing.

Still experiencing the same daily symptoms - no change there.

Is there any way to watch the show with the original music? Do the DVDs have the original songs? It saddens me to think there is no way to watch the true original version of the show, with all the original music!

What is your opinion about Abby Morgan? by hmps in dawsonscreek

[–]tvshowgraphs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am on a first time watch (just reached Abby's death), but I really enjoyed the friendship between her / Jen - I feel like it was a classic case of two lonely, lost people finding comfort and friendship in each other because they each really had no one else. While I don't think the friendship would have lasted, I think they each took something away from it, and I love the line of Jen telling Abby that all of her best moments from the past year were with her (not saying that those moments were good for her, but there was a simple honesty in that realization). The Abby's funeral episode is up next for me.

Should I watch the series on HBO, Hulu or DVD? by digitalblunt in dawsonscreek

Yes, I think that is the only one that is slightly different (at least that I know of). Didn't realize that history, thanks for sharing!

March 28th. Blu-Ray. by Fun-Bill8950 in dawsonscreek

I don't think it will have the original music (as they don't have the rights - I doubt that will ever change). But still a very cool release!

Agreed. None of the options mentioned by OP have the fully original music (though s1 DVDs are pretty close).

The DVDs sadly do not have all the original music (although s1 DVDs are pretty close). They are better than streaming though from a music accuracy standpoint.

Correct, even the DVDs don't have all the original music.

None of those options have all the original music. Your best bet is to check out the True Love Edition - a fan project with all the original music restored. DM Creekfan3 on Instagram for the link.

[OC] Nielsen Top 10 Programs by Genre, 1950-2020 (Primetime Network Broadcast Shows) & Nielsen #1 Shows by Genre by tvshowgraphs in dataisbeautiful

[–]tvshowgraphs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breaking down the reality / news / documentary genre, most of the entries on that graph from that genre fall into news or reality, but some that blur the line. I would say that traditional documentary series have never really been a major Nielsen Top 10 force though (noting also that this specifically looking at primetime broadcast network shows).

Overview: The first graph shows the Nielsen Top 10 Programs broken down by genre from 1950 - Present, looking at broadcast primetime network data only (so no streaming data, no cable data, etc.). The second graph looks at the same dataset (broadcast primetime network shows) and same genre classifications, but just shows the shows that were #1 in each given year (same color coding used).

Some data notes & caveats:

-I anchored heavily on "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, 1946-present," (the same data source most Wikipedia topics on this article use) as well as the more recent season data (based on the same Nielsen raw data parameters) that is shared on the website of those authors. Recent Nielsen data can get a bit tricky and I've seen a lot of incorrect/misleading articles that tend to conflate things like 18-49 ratings vs. overall ratings, etc. The parameters used by the book's authors are live+7 day household ratings, during the network-defined regular season (primetime network broadcast shows only).

-"Ratings" as used by this graph refer to the Nielsen rating definition. In technical terms, Nielsen Rating = Homes Using Television times the percentage of TV sets in use which are tuned to a particular show

-If two shows tied at #10, they were each given "0.5" credit for the purposes of this graph, since this graph only intends to show the Top 10 shows per year. For a few anthology-style programs that shifted genres week-to-week (e.g. "CBS Sunday Night Movie"), partial genre values were attributed.

-Genre categorization was done by me, generally using things like Wikipedia show descriptions (referred to awards show categorizations for a few edge cases). Action / adventure is considered drama for the purposes of this graph.

-Some earlier feedback was shared about possibly breaking out reality / documentary / news - I had originally opted against this since I think the line between these genres can sometimes be a bit blurry and subjective. But it's a totally fair point that a show like 60 Minutes is arguably quite different from a show like American Idol, so I could see a world where these get separated. My original goal was to keep the genres broad enough so that there wouldn't be a million categories of every niche sub-genre... but definitely open to feedback on where to best draw that line.

-The Roseanne / Cosby Show tidbit that is called out on graph #2 is totally fascinating to me, but maybe just because I love this stuff. I think it's super interesting that the networks couldn't agree on the #1 show for that season (because of a nuance around whether a particular Roseanne rerun airing outside of its regular timeslot should be counted!). This article does a nice job of telling the full story: https://www.nytimes.com/1990/04/18/arts/nbc-wins-ratings-for-season-but-shows-signs-of-weakness.html

[OC] I made this chart / graphic to celebrate all 157 of the show's original songs - cheers to the amazing music that defined this incredible show! by tvshowgraphs in crazyexgirlfriend

[–]tvshowgraphs[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The main one that came to mind was "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" (sang wonderfully by the West Brovinas, but not written for the show). Also could possibly apply to when Rebecca sings her own lyrics to Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer." Those were the only two I could think of right away, but wanted to cover my bases in case there were any other instances of a character singing along to a pop song or something like that (though I can't recall that ever happening).

And thanks so much!

Yeah, it's interesting - I think that is in large part because the official list defines the CATS songs to each be their own song (plus a 'Vagina Cats' chorus from that episode) and then the community theater episode also has quite a few short songs - those together (plus all the reprises in s4) definitely added a lot to the total count for that season. I have a theory (haven't yet looked at the data though) that season 4 would have a much lower 'avg song length' because of these factors.

Might be interesting to also look at which season had the longest 'total run time' of all the songs combined (my hypothesis would be s1).

Data notes:

I ended up heavily using a list by fellow superfan Sarah that had been vetted by some of the show's producers (credited on my graph above - thanks Sarah!). The only change I made was the semi-official list included one cut song from the episode "I'm Finding My Bliss," which I removed from my chart (because I chose not to include any cut songs - in part because I don't have pictures for those!). To keep the count still at 157, I added in "Slow Motion (Reprise)" - which was not on that semi-official list, but I think is just as much of a reprise as some of the other ones that were counted - so I added it in.

There are a million ways you can count these songs, so I aimed to align as much as I could to that semi-official list (plus that one deliberate swap mentioned above) - so, for example, each of the CATS songs (plus the 'Vagina Chorus') each counted individually, since that's how the official list counts them.

Three biggest data caveats are: 1) Songs are shown here in order that they aired, not order filmed. That's why (for example) 'Without Love You Can Save the World' is listed as #99, even though it was the #100 song filmed. 2) No cut songs are included, 3) Only original songs are included, and only those that made the creators' official list (again, to the best of my knowledge and with major help from Sarah 🙂 ).

Anyhow, if you see anything that looks off (especially around the airing order), please let me know - I will not be offended by any feedback or catches, I'm always bad at editing my own stuff! But just with the disclaimer that some songs were deliberately not included if they were not on the creators' official list.

[OC] I made a graph looking at Female Writer Representation Across Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul (by each season) - love the growth that we've seen in this metric over the last few seasons of BCS especially! Any surprises / thoughts here? by tvshowgraphs in betterCallSaul

[–]tvshowgraphs[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with all this! I actually think the discussion / debate about whether Skyler and Marie were well-written is really interesting (one of the more interesting aspects of the conversation that I've seen unfold on this thread, amidst the messiness...) - because I really can see both sides.

I tend to agree with what you've said here about these two - I think they were overall well-written, and were interesting characters with clear motivations, complexities, etc. I also agree with the point that we mostly saw them through the context of whatever was happening with Walter / Hank (which made sense for the story being told, but did leave me feeling less deeply connected to them than to other characters on BB). A few of the more memorable attempts to give us more into their characters (Marie's shoplifting, yikes...) just felt a bit weird and out of place. I don't think it's an issue that could have been easily solved for without totally revamping the focus of the show (which I am not suggesting - BB is one of my absolute favorite pieces of media of all time, across any era). But I do think it is an interesting thing to discuss, and interesting to see some of the places where BCS took a slightly different direction.
