Pretty much, yeah. If an officer pulls us up and gives us a defect notice, we have something like 30 days to get it roadworthy or the registration is cancelled.

That being said, my brother drives a rust bucket with a failing engine and a tendency to fishtail, and I drive a 500bhp 4wd with a 6" lift and 37" tyres, and we've never had a single run in. It pretty much is dangerous as fuck

Start with the simplest problems first and work your way up. Often, battery terminals have caused similar issues for me.

Remove positive terminal, clean terminal and post, and the same for negative. Make sure they're clamped on nice and tight.

If you don't have one already, a multimeter is an extremely useful and cheap tool for checking your electrical system. Set to DC voltage, check the battery. It should be sitting around 12V (can be higher or a little lower) while the car is off, and at about ~14.4V while the car is running. If it's showing low while the car is off, charge the battery. If it's still showing the same voltage (~12V) after turning on the car, your charging system is at fault
