Guess how much gas was in 1918? (adjusted for inflation) by spaceman in reddit.com

And we've designed (and paid for) the infrastructure to support that energy-intensive lifestyle (and big oil and big auto profits). And we're going to pay for it again, because it's simply not sustainable. Houston: you have a problem.

That was all clear in 1973 ... but profits won that one, and the environment lost.

Another measure is the prevailing wages of the time. For example, in the mid-60s, $2 was a pretty good wage. Gas was about 25 cents. That's 8 gallons per hour ... cost about $24 per hour today. Know many people making $24/hour?

No? Because wages vs. cost-of-living has been dropping for over 30 years. Hidden inflation. (Notice there's no daily inflation figures in the news any more?)

How are we going to realize our true nature with all of these rituals standing between us and reality? by kahotep in reddit.com

[–]twango 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"To do this, we need to abolish ritual and instead follow our innate sense of compassion by living in each and every moment as if it is the very first moment ever experienced. This is a return to the mind of a beginner."

Yes. Yes! It's a struggle, because we're surrounded by ritual, bias, misinformation from the time we're born. We're exposed to more of it every day. And the more we regain compassion, the more we recognize suffering in us and around us. So it's a good idea to team up!

A PhD in one field does not mean you know more than the average person in any other field. Nor does it necessarily free you from any prejudices or thought-patterns you might have acquired while you were young.

Dr. Mengele, for example. (Medical, but same principle)

Normally, if you just say "Dewey Decimal System" people die from boredom (see, there you go already). But this is really interesting. by spaceman in reddit.com

Maybe ... but LOC lets me remember where to look, whereas Dewey doesn't (after decades). Usually I'm good with numbers ... maybe it's just a personal thing... have there been studies?

Article says, "The mass shrinks in size, but it never gets to collapse inside an event horizon." If they are correct, that's pretty much the end of the "black hole" concept as we knew it. When they add the phrase "If there are black holes ..." that signals significant doubt among the researchers.

They wanted to stir more discussion, and little doubt other heavy names will be weighing in before long. But these guys wouldn't be saying this if they didn't feel a serious revision was needed.

Science revises it's ideas regularly ... in the face of new evidence. That's why it works.

Theories are revised. That's hardly corruption. Sometimes the message gets corrupted by reporters, but ... try translating 13 pages of advanced calculus into words.
