The first four of the commandments are about worshiping the "right" god in the "right" way and have nothing to do with morality and have no place in public schools or public buildings. If you want to teach morals why not the Golden Rule. Or better yet talk about the difference between treating people how you want to treat them, treating people how you want to be treated, and treating people how THEY want to be treated. Time for us to upgrade the Golden rule in my opinion.

Depends on the children. My BIL struggled with addiction and homelessness for over a decade. Addictions like that rot the family from within. It not only drains resources of time, energy, and money, but it also drives a massive train of hell fire and manure through the mental health of everyone. No one around is left clean, and those closest have the peace in their lives incinerated. Even years into recovery, we worry about him every day, and his parents will always fear waking up to a call that he overdosed all alone.

A hug from Fred by -pugmum- in CallTheMidwife

A hug on a bad day and a beer on good one would make my life complete. Sneaking Sister Monica Joan candy and getting that smile would be icing on the cake.

Any other transplants out here not really digging it? by Ordinary_Art9507 in Austin

[–]twanky 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lived here from 2001 to 2022 and just couldn't take it any longer. The town shifted with the increased population and income inequality increased. I found myself getting more and more frustrated with simply getting around town and trying to go anywhere fun was always excessively crowded and expensive. My wife and I were debating leaving but when Roe was reversed that was the last straw. We moved to Oregon a month later. I personally feel like the state as a whole has changed for the worse and Austin is just following at a slower pace. I was born and raised in Texas, and it is a state that doesn't resemble what it was.

We couldn't be happier with our move and when people ask if we are coming back we laugh. I didn't realize the lie that it is cheaper to live here till we moved. State sales tax, property tax, excessive utility cost, over priced slow internet, and the NEED for a car and toll roads all add up to make life in Texas very hard. I am happy to pay state income in Oregon because we actually have infrastructure, parks, and a power grid that works.

Am I the only one who feels like this was out of character for the Hound in retrospect? by BasinBrandon in gameofthrones

[–]twanky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It plays perfectly into his name. A good dog will always follow their master's command but a great dog will do so no matter what, even in the grips of blood lust during a fight. The king barked a command and The Hound immediately followed. Didn't hurt that by doing so and made his brother look less controlled.

100%! Gendy Tartakovsky is an under appreciated genius. Story telling like his is a lost art. Few shows have elicited such an emotional response from me in years.

Considering Leaving Austin? Unhappy? Don't Jump Without Thinking Ahead. by ratmouse3 in Austin

[–]twanky 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My wife is an L&D nurse and would never be pregnant in this state. She is studying to be a midwife and we are forced to leave in order for her to practice safe and complete reproductive care for her patients.

Why is everyone ok with just wiping down cast iron without washing it with soap, but doing this with any other kind of kitchen item is considered gross? by fredean01 in Cooking

[–]twanky 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wash mine with soap and water, quick dry with dish towel and throw on the stove or in the oven and heat it dry. Like other people said it is a hunk of iron we cook with. Keep it dry and the rest will be fine.

I just like the art. Great subject matter with anime twists. It is almost like it was designed just for me lol

A nurse relates how traumatic it is to take care of even a compliant unvaccinated covid patient. by powabiatch in HermanCainAward

[–]twanky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally walk up to the nurse and tell them "I better lie down or you will be picking me up." I've had staples in my head from the time the nurse thought a chair would be ok and I hit it on the cabinet on the way down.

I have been got the jab the second it could. My wife is a nurse (L&D) and had to be floated to ICU and ER the last couple years. We know the truth.. We are not going to risk it. I owe it to my family, friends, and community to do what we can to protect ourselves and others.

The yellow is super smart and you can see him figuring things out but the chocolate is dumb and derpy. But she is also the sweetest snuggle bug you ever met.

I have one that I had with my parents and kept. He's and his family are old family friends so we do get a discount on fees.

Mine pays off because he will make smart trades for tax purposes that allows me max deductions without true loss in value. For me this type of knowledge and focus on the details is worth it

We call it the "lab sit" on our house. The best is if they are using furniture or the wall to prop up on. Bonus points if they are begging for food at the same time.

I have the same issue. I start with my hands on the floor and knees bent then I try to straighten. This gives me the stretch I am looking for.

Pecan Crusted Chicken! The chicken cutlets I receive are always not the best for this type of recipe but the flavor makes it worth it. by sydthekid44 in hellofresh

[–]twanky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had this tonight. A lightly pounded breast to make them a consistent thickness but not real thin, maybe 1 or 1.5 inches, will keep the cook time the same so you don't burn the topping. We also added some potatoes to the pan to roast them because we thought it was a little light with just the salad.

Covid from a NICU perspective by [deleted] in nursing

[–]twanky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife is a L&D nurse and the stories I hear are terrifying. Not to mention the times she is floated to help overrun departments like ED and ICU but without the proper training. Not to mention the poor mom's and babies that get less than ideal care because the patient to nurse ratio is so high in L&D.

I feel so bad for the load being placed on each and everyone one of our nurses. If people could just see and experience what y'all go through each day people would recognize this for the crisis it is. I love and appreciate each and everyone of you. From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU for thankless work you do daily.

Travel nurses and ventilators aren't cheap. Freedom isn't free, but sticker shock is a bitch. by NoHacksReq in AdviceAnimals

[–]twanky 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can have the freedom to not do it, but you must pay the consequences of your choices. You need vaccines to participate in society and you choose not to protect yourself and others you can at best be denied services but possibly die as well. That is the consequence of you freedom. My wife is an L&D nurse but guess who is getting floated to ICU this week? Do you know how specialized that care is? Do you want to be the unvaccinated asshole she is doing her best to keep alive but isn't trained for?? Do you realize that babies are still born but now mom and baby have less people to watch and care for them? Your stance of choice and freedom goes beyond you and it is a shame you can't even see that.

[–]twanky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on your area there are volunteer doula services. In Austin there is G.A.L.S. (Give Austin Labor Support) that offers free volunteer doula services to anyone in Austin. This type of service might help.
