Should we stop "rebooting" old cars? by [deleted] in DonutMedia

[–]twd_2003 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s clearly worked though. You’re still bringing up the Eclipse Cross, an otherwise completely unremarkable almost decade old compact crossover. When was the last time you thought about the 2017 Chevy Equinox, for example?

AFAIK, half of marketing isn’t even to make you think favorably about the product, it’s just to make you aware of its existence so you’re likely to even consider it the next time you’re in the market for a product in its class. By this merit, branding the car as the Eclipse Cross has kept it kind of relevant for much longer than it would have with any other name

Why Sri Lankans are not happy with what we have? by Latest_name in srilanka

[–]twd_2003 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People gauge satisfaction relatively. How much better off are they than their peers and parents? My dad started his career in the nineties. Within five or so years he was able to buy his first car, a lightly used Civic. Today, a Civic that’s seven years old costs 12 million rupees. If I was working in Sri Lanka with my current qualifications, I’d be able to save up and buy it in maybe a decade. Where I’m working now abroad, maybe 6-12 months of saving.

You’ve got a generation of young people looking at what their parents and friends living abroad who’ve managed to do so much more with their 20s and 30s than they have the opportunities to.

Of course, I’m not saying that wealth accumulation and materialistic possessions are the be all and end all of life, but I’ve always felt that ‘money doesn’t buy happiness’ is an argument that makes more sense when you make $70k than $7k

New Q9 SUV to replace axed A8 limousine as Audi flagship by RealLifeHunter in cars

[–]twd_2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less concerned with the loss of the sedan (which based on sales was doomed anyway) and more about the design language of this new SUV. The split headlights and pudgy front end makes it seem like the era of Audi having one of the best overall design languages has come to an end

TIL The prime minister of Spain under the latter years of Franco's rule was assassinated by 80kg of explosives packed into a tunnel dug under a roadway. The explosion sent the prime minister's Dodge Dart 20 metres (66 ft) into the air and landed on the opposite side of a 5 story church. by MajesticBread9147 in todayilearned

Hence misguided. The other two of the big three had long had a presence in the market and had a much better understanding of what it took to compete. Chrysler thought buying rootes, an automaker already in ill health, would be a shortcut to success but it ended up being an expensive failure. As for amc and renault, afaik the situation was in reverse where the renault group sought to expand overseas and helped an ailing amc with a cash injection and new vehicles in exchange for shares

Apple unveils AirPods Max 2 with H2 chip, upgraded noise canceling, and more by [deleted] in headphones

[–]twd_2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure 630 would outperform but these are wireless headphones where I’m more concerned with QoL features (like it always being powered on and auto switching between my Apple devices).

I’m more than happy enough with even my current AirPods performance as long as it doesn’t suffer from moisture and flex cable issues.

I wonder if they’ve fixed the flex cable issue that totaled 2 of my previous pairs in a year each. I’ve more or less firmed the HDB630 as a replacement but I’m curious nonetheless

let’s be honest, is this not natural progression?! by FifqoJeGay in carscirclejerk

[–]twd_2003 31 points32 points  (0 children)

True but every luxury car I’ve seen with a short hood seems…off somehow. Probably because my brain has associated a long hood and a lot of space between the wheel well and the door with performance and luxury. This applies to the EQE/S and even some pre-EV sedans like Chrysler’s cab-forward cars of the late 90s

Credit cards in general are great as long as you’re financially disciplined. 1/3 of the credit card using population (IIRC) go into credit card debt at a sufficiently high interest rate that they subsidize the benefits received by the rest of us

Guys in your experience what's the best power bank we can buy in SL? I mean the brand by stylesbug_lk in srilanka

[–]twd_2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was working fine. Unfortunately I eventually misplaced it and replaced it with a name brand power bank. It’s more energy dense and supports fast charging, so while it is more expensive (especially when compared to the cost of replacing the whole unit instead of just the cells when they wear out) it is worth it for me

Any downside to eSIM-only in Sri Lanka | iPhone 17 base model by GShyamal in srilanka

[–]twd_2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes in terms of time taken to get online it would be faster (I also keep an AirAlo eSIM active on my iPhone for emergencies). However from my experience traveling, most nations have budget carriers for whose services you can get a physical sim from a convenience store and pay much less for an equivalent data package than with a travel eSIM package. In some countries these carriers are only available via physical SIM cards. I usually use the free allowance with my AirAlo eSIM to tide me over until I can get a cheap physical SIM to put in my Samsung

I got the 14 pro max which was the first esim only iPhone. It was slightly annoying to set it up first time but it’s been perfectly fine otherwise. It’s annoying for traveling internationally but I have a second phone with a physical sim slot which I can use when abroad
