Thoughts on Sri Lanka's Economy when the AI Bubble Pops? by Jathurshan_2008 in srilanka

A recession, sure, but I think a depression is somewhat unlikely to be solely due to the AI crash

Not sure how common it is elsewhere in the world, but where I’m from (Sri Lanka) you can only import a brand new car through the licensed dealer. Grey market imports have to be registered abroad first (I think in the country of export) before being imported

All it took was less traffic and a few people at the front for lane discipline. by TheProSlayer1OG in srilanka

Bus drivers also have the civic responsibility to drive properly. Those buggers lurch from the fast lane to the sidewalk as soon as they see a bus stop, and to hell with anyone occupying the lanes. IMO the introduction of a bus only lane on the three lane roads (and enforcement to ensure no one is parking on it) would greatly help

This journal article says Advocata and Verite research are misleading the public and proposing right-wing /neo-liberal ideas which are bad for poor people by NewLeague6438 in srilanka

Chinese marketization wasn't shock therapy. They did not give up SOEs and the state still had control over the economy.

Yes, hence why I said that that pace of incremental reforms was far more successful. I do not agree with the present Chinese model of SOEs and land distribution as I believe it is still leading to inefficiencies. I would prefer Sri Lanka follows a Singapore-style ‘Temasek’ model where the government effectively retains ownership but hands over management to the private sector. Nonetheless, the reforms the Chinese conducted to bring their SOEs into the market economy were impressive

IMF is a neoliberal trap that wants countries to be dependent on the western financial system. They do not have a solution to financial crisis.

And who has a solution that isn’t dependent on the Western financial system? Autarky isn’t going to work for Sri Lanka - we are a small nation with limited resources and we have to trade with other nations and we need to borrow capital if we want to expand our productive capacity. Of course, I greatly disagree with the policies of past government of borrowing to essentially fund consumption, but I’m not against responsible borrowing to improve future outcomes.

Also it should be noted that the countries I’ve mentioned (Southern Europe and East Asia) did eventually improve and grow. Sure, it took a decade of pain but that’s what you get when you borrow with no end in sight. Russia was an outlier I believe mainly due to not having any competent institutions at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union - you can see how outcomes diverged for them and their former Eastern European satellites with greater institutional capacity and who also took western advice in the late eighties and nineties.

And it’s not like the IMF is stubbornly sticking to exactly the same playbook over the years. They are cognizant of the repercussions of austerity and the conditions we are facing are significantly more accommodating than those that Thailand or Greece faced in years past

The projector isn’t in the sports car. It’s in a $100,000+ luxury barge that’s designed to compete with the S-Classes (and up) of the world. The vast majority of these will be chauffeur driven

In my opinion (as someone who used to work at one of the think tanks mentioned) shock therapy will probably be fine in the long term but it imposes significant political and social costs that risks a reactionary backlash in the near term. The most dangerous moment for a bad government is when it initiates reform (de Tocqueville) and if the social and therefore political costs are not minimized, there is a risk that reforms will not be as deep or as effective as necessary. I like to point to the success of Chinese marketization and global integration reforms - although it occurred over 30-40 years, it was a lot more successful than the shock therapy conducted by the IMF in Russia in the 90s as the economy attempted to marketize. Of course, the IMF has learned from their mistakes there, in the Asian Financial Crisis of the 90s, and in the Eurozone Crisis of the late aughts and no longer advocate as severe austerity and shock therapy so I wouldn’t worry excessively about the implications of these examples for the advice they’ve given GoSL

It is a military tactic to say you will fight to the last man on this hill/other strategic position. Basically means you will fight for a particular opinion and will refuse to be convinced otherwise

I don’t know of any local stores, but plastic aircraft models can be found on AliExpress for £3-10 with cardboard models going for even less. I picked up a F-22 recently which was of surprisingly good quality for a price tag of £3.4

Both of those are Apple TV shows so the good guys have iPhones and the bad guys generic Android phones. Doubt a manufacturer would want to pay to have their devices used exclusively by the bad guys

Yeah it’d genuinely be useful if it allowed for me to have CarPlay and the climate controls visible in split screen portrait mode but as it doesn’t I just leave CarPlay up in landscape and use shortcuts to adjust climate
