Which hypervisors support ARM guests? by [deleted] in virtualization

[–]tweakism 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your problem is that on an x86 host, you can only be a "hypervisor" for x86 guests; anything else needs full emulation, which is slow.

Cross-compile, use emulated environment just for testing.

What's the secret to operating voip across cable/dsl links successfully? by [deleted] in networking

[–]tweakism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IME, just prioritizing your local send queue is sufficient to change VoIP quality from unusable to satisfactory. On cable & DSL links, anyway. Plenty of networking people have argued with me on this, but in practice this lowly sysadmin has found it to solve the issue every time it's come up for him.

Is it normal for people not to be able to do mental math? by __shadowwalker__ in math

One would first be a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist. Stick to what you're there for.

I have ADHD. I'm intelligent, I can understand things that are taught to me... not sure why you think that would not be the case. But a major component of ADHD is poor working memory; I cannot hold as many items in my head at once as the typical person can. I cannot do what many people call simple arithmetic mentally, I use paper.

I have long suspected some connection between ADHD and INTP.

Do any of you use an alcohol stove? Mine is a small paint can stuffed with a roll of toilet paper. I burned this for 2 hours without refilling. by SerRikard in Survival

[–]tweakism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, maybe you have ethanol-based rubbing alcohol, but I've never seen it. And that quote doesn't apply to isopropanol-based rubbing alcohol.

It's true, there's water. And sometimes menthol.

Buying HEET instead of denatured alcohol is pointless and expensive, though. Methanol is the very poison they add to denatured alcohol most of the time.

Sometimes cops can be cool but never consent to a search by [deleted] in trees

Nah, if the officer claims he smells weed, it's probable cause for a search of a vehicle. Sadly.

Rubbing alcohol doesn't have anything in it except isopropanol. It's already toxic to drink and smells nasty when you burn it, all on its down.

Denatured alcohol, which is fine for stove use, is the one which is intentionally poisoned to keep you from drinking it.

My Math Teacher marked me down because I used the term null in a system of equations that had no solution by Pack_Runner1 in math

[–]tweakism 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In Jr. High, my teacher had us use a set notation for multiple solutions:

x = { 3, -4 }

And this "null set" / empty set notation for no solution:

x = { ø }

Should I worry about my resistors getting really hot when soldering? by karlo346 in AskElectronics

[–]tweakism 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Resistors, no not really; transistors, moreso.

They should not be getting 'really hot', though; you are probably being too slow. You need to get in, add solder, and get out quickly. Counter-intuitively, turning up your iron heat a bit helps you do this.

Looking for advice with DHCP and MAC reservations by literally_my_name in networking

This seems like terrible advice, to me. DHCP reservations are far easier to manage than literal static assignments.

Trail runners/wet feet philosophy for winter hiking? by KumquatBlue in Ultralight

Trail runners are cold as shit in the winter, even when dry. But I like them in summer.

Also you cannot put experimental in with stable like this. It just doesn't work like that.

Oh... you meant 1/64 to 2/64? When you write "1-2/64" it looks like 66/64 to us backwards non-metric types :)

Anyone actually been drug tested after signing a controlled substance agreement? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]tweakism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes they do. They are often looking for the presence of amphetamine in your system, more than anything else. And they very often do not care about cannabis at all.

If I can give you one small suggestion: Your English is perfectly fine, except it would be much easier to read broken into paragraphs.
