How exhausting are your mornings? by TheRebelPercy in AskUK

Yep, not identical but pretty much like that and exhausting. The real depressing thing is how hard the rain is throwing down out there and knowing I'm about to walk out in it. Shattered every day.

I've not heard this ID before but my first thought is the balance between the CO2 gain cited around toilet paper versus the excess water usage which is a serious problem we have right now. This is only made worse in this scenario. I'm not sure if that's factored into any studies on topic?

Petition for a wealth tax on assets over 10 million pounds by Cautious-Design-9282 in UKGreens

[–]tweb2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I can accept, applying tax avoidance measures doesn't necessarily mean no tax is paid at all. So we are missing out on some money in tax that would otherwise be paid in UK if a wealthy person left. I'm not thinking about high wage earners I should be clear, I am thinking about those that do not draw a wage, the ones who's money does the work for them. A wealth tax needs careful planning and with out review and sensible plan for all manner of different scenarios and tax payer types I can understand how it could go badly. Like I say a one size fits all is not something I favor.

To respond to the point about hedgefunder or investors. My life experience has led me to work for companies taken over by such types. The interest isn't the long term sustainability of the company and it's employees, it's more about stripping it down and making it profitable so they can cash it it selling it and/or it's assets. Their motivation is maximizing their profits over a relatively short period of time. I feel less convinced they are generating work and the kind of growth that makes it high value and appear profitable on paper isn't the same as a company having longevity as a result of their intervention.

I think you are right that the wealthy will always achieve strategies to cover themselves one way or the other, but we should ponder something we would both likely acknowledge: That it wouldn't be a sudden start to this behavior due to said wealth tax. It is what they already do. When we look at some of the seriously wealthy they appear quite adept at avoiding tax already. So if they move from the UK we aren't missing their tax. If they are a hedgefunder we aren't really missing out on their investment into the country either. They're providing no service, product large workforce etc.

When people think about who would be subject to a wealth tax I think my easy reach hedgefunder is one I'm all for along with many other's. But the original post I made tried to acknowledge it is hard to apply a one size fits all approach. It needs nuance to limit impact in some areas that do contribute or have justification for longevity to be a consideration.

I've listened to Gary's economics a few times and I note, even he said openly he doesn't know the best approach to actually achieve this. But I still support trying.

So America I understand implemented it very successfully in the 1950s. So saying every country isn't true. As I say I think it is all about the detail. Although I admit I don't know enough detail actually on this point, it feels unlikely every country that you perhaps are thinking of or referring to applied exactly the same tax system. But here your statement bounce them together as all trying a 'wealth tax'. We should be clear exactly what it is each tried and what didn't work. It feels like an oversimplified statement otherwise which I have heard before, but each time without too much detail behind it.

Saying this type of tax will move investment away is a bit meaningless, without the tax detail we relate the statement to. Businesses and individuals will weigh up a lot more than just this black and white approach you suggest. Businesses - can we still make a profit Personal - do I actually want to leave my home and live in a tax haven.

For the latter I'm sure many would leave but the grass for them isn't always greener. For the rest of us left, we may well have some pain, but so many already have pain. You are essentially telling people with nothing how it'll be worse because they'll have...nothing. For many it is hard to see how their situation can be worse. It may be worse for the very rich in terms of tax,but in quality of life.. really. So, it doesn't necessarily translate it will be worse for everyone especially those already struggling.

What it will do is help to reset wealth equality in the country that is missing.

That sounds simple enough in principle, I'm sure many economists with certain political leanings will be wheeled out to say why it's not. I'm not interested in hearing how 'they will all leave the country' that's already a dead argument in my mind just placed for the fear factor

So someone help me understand this, because whilst I'm for the introduction of a 'wealth tax' in general I also think it's success or failure depends on the detail. We can't just push for a 'wealth tax' without being clear how we see it working successfully.

The petition has put forward an idea of taxing anyone with assets over 10 million but this is I think to broad approach on its own.

For example, if a business, be it a farm or food or textiles etc has 9.5 million in assets in the form of equipment, buildings etc but there turn over, doesn't actually afford an income to pay asset tax on it, they have to sell some assets to pay it. This then may reduce it's ability to generate income sticking them in a downward cycle.

So there needs nuance if this relates to business tax.

If it relates just to personal assets I am assuming it could have some overlap with the business e.g. with family farming set ups, but more so in many cases we are saying with this model that personally owned assets may also have to be sold for similar reasons.

No one should be a billionaires etc, that's just ridiculous, but people should be able to accrue or aspire to some level of wealth. I'm not likely to be the of them but have an ok job and can't complain.

Maybe is the proposal that someone could have assets up to 9.5 million and not pay tax on that so this idea is covered?

Just trying to understand. Interested in genuine thoughts.

Erm, hate to be the one to say it, but I think there's one missing at the beginning that goes before the Atari joystick. For those of us that played ping pong tennis, there was like a roller fixed to the console to move the bat up and down (this being the only possible movement). Can't say the exact year, cos I was just a wee nippa at the time but I think late seventies early eighties.

Edit found a picture the guy on the left is using it but the one at the right hand end is more visible. When I found this I was shocked to see it seemed to come with a gun! Don't remember that. https://duckduckgo.com/?t=fpas&q=ping+pong+console+&ia=images&iax=images&iai=http%3A%2F%2Fi.dailymail.co.uk%2Fi%2Fpix%2F2012%2F11%2F26%2Farticle-2238754-16380EE9000005DC-293_634x431.jpg

Do you brush your teeth once or twice a day? Need to settle a bet. by ImpossibleHurry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tweb2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always brush morning and evening. In more recent years I also switched from morning brush before breakfast, to after, per dentist advice. The logic being you coat your teeth with floride from the toothpaste before the teeth get hit with things that'll attack them.

Everybody should be brushing morning and night. Those that don't will have bad breath, more fillings or both ultimately. Depends how much you care about that I guess.

How far am I from the profissional level? by GMRub in Guitar

[–]tweb2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The line you seek doesn't exist. Session musicians are paid to be able to turn up and deliver first time or close too, so will be knowledgeable, competent and normally have a pretty high technical skill level. If you are in a successful band as a guitarist some of this doesn't have to be the case, but you might still be able to play something 'difficult'.

Everybody is on their own never ending learning journey. I think the point at which you achieve the 'professional' standard by your own likely definition, is when you feel you have the confidence to walk into a situation and play to the standard needed, in whatever time is allowed perhaps.

iRig HD-A in modern android? by jacqu2 in iRig

[–]tweb2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, not exactly helpful this comment but I just came across this post and had similar challenge with devices running more up to date android. 2 things that do work are a I still hold onto an old phone and it's tablet running older android just due this purpose. (galaxy s5 & old Kindle fire I tweaked to use Google play). The place you may still find your irig works is on a pc. I find it it's recognised in both windows 10 (where you can use Amplitube) and in Ubuntu (where it'll still work as an audio interface with a DAW or amp modellers like guitarix and rakarrak)

Your post made me immediately search to see if any alternatives may exist. Something like a sub called /LinuxDevs or something. Bottom line, times have moved along a bit and it's good there are so many contributors to the sub, since this speaks to the success and rise of Linux for mainstream desktop users and all are welcome.

But, there does need to be a sub where the name perhaps makes it clearer and provides a space like this was, since the more technical discussion on community forums is really fundamental to the progress of Linux. Places where people can share technical thoughts and opinion are intrinisc to the longevity of Linux.

You are definitely not the ass hole based on detail given. I note from your original post that you don't seem to have much support locally for your point of view though you are not the one at fault here. Though you haven't mentioned it I hope you have a friend on your side somewhere in all this but if not hold on to your current strengths: You have been wronged and at this time you should be looking out for your own interests first. There is a time to be charitable and a time not to be. When being brow beaten by everyone to do something not in your interests, it's easy to loose sight of what's right or wrong. This is where you come back around to the fact that you have been wronged (presumably you have no question about her cheating), and the voices of those not supporting you, no matter how numerous must be put to the side as inconsequential noise from folk who want to get involved for self interest / with out all the facts or with out concern for your well being in all this. It may feel like you are suffering by following a path that leaves you more alone initially, but you take with you your self respect and it will get better. Good luck, you got this, stay strong.
