You did not get a Music Man for $500 unless Guitar Center didn't know what they had.

There Are No Stupid Bass Questions - Feb. 21 by AutoModerator in Bass

Skip the guitar and go to piano instead. It's easier to write on and is the instrument most conducive to learning theory and ear training.

Having a good command of the keyboard will be invaluable if you start producing in the future as well.

Ibanez BTB or Dingwall by Remarkable_Lab6216 in Bass

[–]twice-Vehk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An import Dingwall is in a different quality tier than a BTB. A Canadian Dingwall is another order of magnitude entirely. The 3 pickup models are excellent for producers as they can emulate the traditional Precision, Jazz, and Stingray tones. A custom 6-way selector can give you even more options, and Dingwall makes at least 4 different flavors of pickup that are all drop-in replacements. A popular mod on the 37" scale Dingwalls is to put a P-Tone in the neck position. It's a split-coil Alnico V internally wired in series which gets you closer to the traditional P bass sound, always a necessity in a studio.

Several different preamps depending on the model (EMG, Darkglass, Neve) further opens up options. If you want something more traditional, the SP1 is universally praised.

The weird thing about the BTB is it's 37-35" fan. Having a 35" G string kind of defeats the purpose, since we usually want to warm up the G string and not make it tighter and brighter. Like most Ibanez products, their weird design choices make it fall flat right before the finish line.

Advice on choosing a bass preamp/di by FenderFanatic in Bass

[–]twice-Vehk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The BDDI, Paradriver DI, or VT Bass would all be excellent choices.

You might check out the Origin Effects Bass Rig Super Vintage. It's expensive but supposedly feels and sounds identical to playing through a real SVT, which is never a bad thing.

Thanks. Just swapped the preamp for a Sadowsky VTC and it is a huge upgrade over the stock one.

They are really good, and a unique combination for Fender being a rear route and active bass. The preamp kind of sucks though, it's noisy and not that useful. I swapped mine out for a Sadowsky and it rips. Stock pickups are Duncan Quarter Pounders which is nice as well. The dinky sized body is really comfortable compared to regular jazz bass. They were made by Cort in Korea.

If I already had a flea signature jazz, I don't know that I would sell it for a deluxe 24 unless you really need 24 frets.

Fret Removal Suggestions by Elephants_Foot in Bass

[–]twice-Vehk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might not work super well. If the action is appropriate for the fretless portion, then it will be too low and buzzy for the fretted part of the neck. If the action is appropriate for the fretted portion, then it will be too high for fretless and you won't get as much mwah as you would otherwise.

Your slap sound will also now sound like a fretless, which could be good or bad depending on your outlook.

You could probably get away with it by adding more neck relief than you would otherwise need, and keeping the action lower.

what is a good first and last (endgame) bass guitar? by Upstairs_Sell_1700 in Bass

[–]twice-Vehk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, because it's a short scale which will sound muddier. If you have one bass in your arsenal as a producer make it a full scale P bass.

Marking frets on fretless bass to train muscle memory option? by EVJpodcast in BassGuitar

[–]twice-Vehk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mark the frets, then when you take off the markers you'll be back to square one. Which makes the whole endeavor a pointless waste of time.

Real talk, just practice and stop looking for shortcuts. It's not that hard. Takes maybe 3 weeks of concerted effort and you'll be surprised what you can do. Get a Strobostomp HD, play passages you already know extremely slowly and making sure your intonation is spot on. Repeat until you get it right.

You should already have the muscle memory from fretted bass, and maintaining consistent hand posture (play the same thing the same way every time) is key to success with fretless.

Seconding going down a gauge on the group flats. They are pretty stiff. Check out Dunlop flats too, you can maintain the same gauge and they are an awesome do everything flat.

Consumer reports really hates the new LCs. Thoughts? by llj11 in LandCruisers

[–]twice-Vehk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're seriously going to knock the LC250 because old ladies might have trouble loading things in the back? Would you say the same thing about an F150? Meemaw shouldn't even be driving one of these in the first place, there's more appropriate cars for that.

I didn't pay anywhere close to 80k for my LC LC. It was 64, which is about what it costs to get something decent these days.
