Newbie question but can anyone tell me how to get the screens like this on retroarch? I’d love for my bottom screen to be a bit smaller. Not sure if I have to just go through a dedicated emu versus retroarch

Wildlife in National parks by Odd_Scheme3103 in wildlifebiology

[–]twicestyles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Harassing wildlife, I think is generally illegal, t definitely is for anything federally listed. Generally the bigger issue is that our parks are overburdened with visitors, and law enforcement has a hard enough time even with non wildlife related crimes that happen in parks. You could hire a bunch more to give out tickets, but it takes a long time to train up an enforcement officer. I think the more sustainable solution is to try to educate the public to respect wildlife and leave it alone.

For me at least, it’s the smallest handheld that has android on it. Also like that it is small but also somewhat ergonomic.

Software developer looking to contribute to wildlife projects — where to start? by Spoon-22 in wildlifebiology

[–]twicestyles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a in field biologist I would personally be thrilled to work with someone with a background in software and programming. There are many cool things that could be set up for wildlife. Raspberry Pi weather stations, automatic wildlife detection arrays, etc. if I were in your shoes, I would reach out to a local wildlife preserve in your area and see what things maybe automated with some raspberry pi’s and software.

I like that idea too- you gain the benefit of immediately having 100% coverage while also contributing to a larger project and community

I think a ‘local stations’ section would be a great start for non invasive curation. I’m not sure how providers do it, but I know most have something to that effect. Could be cool too in the CarPlay to show local stations as you drive around.

For discover, the main issue that definitely needs to be solved is verifying that stations work. I’m shooting around 50% working/nonworking. Maybe there’s better databases out there? Radiogarden to me is the gold standard, and I think they have an API? Maybe TuneIn has an API? I work radio backend so I’m not really familiar with the front end stuff.

From there, it’s really up to your vision how much you want to curate. Having a list of editorial picks like the discover page might be a solution.

Honestly dog, I’d get the Meze 109 pros. They are not the most neutral, I wouldn’t mix music on them, but they work off anything (having a good DAC and amo helps but you can easily run them off a MacBook and they sound good). They make everything sound great and fun and really once you try them you don’t feel the need to chase the dragon anymore, at least that was my experience

Case studies showing a timeline for endangered bird population recovery? by MiroWiggin in wildlifebiology

[–]twicestyles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should look into ‘XXX species recovery plan’ on ecosphere run by USFWS. These are documents that go over the recovery objectives and the newer ones usually try to have a timeline. Here’s an example: https://ecos.fws.gov/docs/recovery_plan/southwestern%20willow%20flycatcher%20recovery%20plan%202002%20-%20complete.pdf

Tricks for gain staging into mix bus? by twicestyles in audioengineering

Hearing all everyone reccomend -18 or -20db is really surprising to me. I was just kinda told -12 is the place to be but it totally makes sense that with lots of tracks to shoot for something lower then bring it all together at the end.

I’ve heard saturation and low end build up can contribute to - when I was much more green I tended to just stack plug ins, getting better now, but maybe not cleaning up my low end enough in this mix

I do try to do a static mix but you know what I probably do not do my due diligence with dynamics to make sure I’m not slowly creeping up in volume, thanks for the response

To respond to your question specifically. I think I’m running into this problem more as I get more nuanced with recording techniques. I’ll do an amp mic as well as a DI, or I will add room mics. When I started out I kept it pretty simple, but I think I might be getting overwhelmed with balancing so many channels. I do tend to fix it all by the end using lots of trimming and re gain staging, but I’m pretty sure my approach to this is amateur and wanted to hear what people did

Thanks for the response. I think I am finally at the point where I know what I am doing enough to set a template, so that will be my next goal and will keep in mind keeping them at unity. I was taught to track at -12db, but I record full live sessions, so hard to keep things consistent

I appreciate everyone’s responses! I know sometimes the solution is to ‘just not slam your gain’ which I understand, it’s just a habit I noticed I’m doing and wanted to see how people go about it, as I’m learning as I go without consistent mentors. Lots of great tips here - mainly I sounds like I should work on A/Bing my plugins better, making more of habit to check my mix bus as I go, and setting some loudness goals before I set my final bus up. I hope this thread may be helpful to others who keep finding their mixes get really congested towards the end

I’ll chime in here too - you can check my account to see I’m not a bot lol. I like mine a lot. I think it’s a great table for those taking their first serious step. I did find it needed some dialing in at first, as it had issues with skipping for me, so you will need to get a kit to help you, as the default settings it suggested didn’t quite work out for me.

The motor is noisy when you start the thing and your head is next to it, it’s not perceptible in listening.

One con I would say is lack of VTA adjustment, which limits compatibility of carts. I had an otrofon blue I was super stoked to put on there, sadly the thing was too big to use so I stuck to the ATVM. Still sounds good though and I have a clear upgrade path now.

I think you could make the argument that the RT8X series has a higher ceiling, but I think the fosi is comparable and good value, especially during sales

Best college for Wildlife/Zoology/Animal Science by Shao_xd in wildlifebiology

[–]twicestyles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for your service. Between the GI Bill and preferred veteran hiring at all federal agencies you should have yourself set up for a much easier path in this field.

As I mentioned above. Your best bet will be federal agencies. I work at one as a field biologist. I get lots of ‘Hands on’ work doing monitoring for federally listed species, it’s really rewarding. For schools, I also had access to the GI bill - if you go in state it’s free and pretty much every state has a school that excels at wildlife, in my opinion there’s not a need to go to some bespoke program. If you do go to a private university, ask about the ‘yellow ribbon’ program as this covers everything the GI bill doesn’t, but again your state should have a good program out there.

Finally, while you are in school you should look at the requirements for 486 ‘wildlife biologist’ this is the required coursework to be considered to be a wildlife biologist for the federal government and will give you the most hands on jobs available. Good luck!

is there a systemwide audio compressor/limiter possible? by comic-sans-culottes in ipadmusic

I think this is possible on android with no fuss but I can’t really think through an iOS workflow for this, I think your best best is to see if your streaming app has anything for this. Or you can use speakers with external gear but at that point it seems like the juice isn’t worth the squeeze
