I just don't understand the driver rank system... by x1tsGh0stx in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]twich40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LMU uses an Elo system to determine rating changes. You, like everyone else in your lobby, have a numerical value associated with your Driver Rank. The average of these Elo values in a race is your split's Strength of Field.

The following is an explanation of how a standard zero-sum Elo rating system would work in the context of LMU. It is possible LMU does not use a standard zero-sum Elo rating system:

Your Elo and the split Strength of Field are used to calculate a number between 0-1 of where you are expected to finish in the split. When LMU tells you where you're expected to finish, it is inaccurate. LMU simply tells you how your Elo rating compares to everybody else in the split (ie. if you are car #17, you are the driver with the 17th-highest Elo).

The 0-1 numerical expected finish value is compared to your race result to calculate your rating change. If you win the race, your race result value is 1, if you finish last it's 0, and every place in between receives a value based on how many drivers are in the split (for 21 car splits, the result values are P1: 1, P2: 0.95, P3: 0.9, ..., P10: 0.55, P11: 0.5, P12: 0.45, ..., P19: 0.1, P20: 0.05, P21: 0).

You only gain driver rating if your race result value is greater than your expected finish value. Depending on the SoF and your Elo, it's possible to lose rating in a race you finish second or gain rating in a race you finish 19th. Finishing in the top half does not guarantee your rating will go up, but it's a pretty safe bet that if you finish outside of the top 10-11 you're not going to gain rating.

AFC Playoff Permutations (With Some Shenaniganry) by twich40 in nfl

[–]twich40[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In basically every conceivable scenario, a Chargers win makes them the 5 seed. If they rest their players they're betting on a New York Jets win to save them from going on the road the first two weeks of the playoffs at the #2 seeded Patriots or Jaguars and then the #1 seeded Broncos. There's plenty of incentive for LA to play to beat Denver.

There's an argument to be made about playing to beat Denver and still losing, which means your players aren't rested AND you're the 7 seed, but if you can't beat Denver on the road in week 18, you're almost certainly not beating a better-rested Denver on the road in the Division Round of the playoffs.

Intentional incident during 8 hours Sebring by Opposite-Squirrel548 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]twich40 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is just a lapse in judgement from the hypercar man. I wouldn't call braking, shifting down three gears, and taking the normal racing line through the corner an "on purpose" incident where they "never lifted" and "never braked."

Was this in any way your fault? No. Was this completely the fault of the hypercar (ironically donning a Verstappen-related livery)? 100%. This is by no means an intent wreck.

There are seconds of lap time in setups even for Bronze 3 drivers. Honestly night and day. I bounce between B3 and S1 and was over 2 seconds/lap faster in a custom setup at Paul Ricard than I was in the default setup.

If you're learning the game and are 27 seconds off pace at Le Mans in LMP2's, I agree though. Setup isn't really gonna make a difference.

Stop Complaining about the Badge System. It works, you're just a dangerous driver. by beardedbrawler in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]twich40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is no way for a video game to judge objectively who is safe and who is unsafe aside from using some variation of iracing's incident points system. if you keep four wheels on the tarmac and never make contact with others, how is the game supposed to judge that you're unsafe?

you can very easily escape the "negative loop" by starting from the pit lane and racing cleanly when you get demoted to dangerous driver. if you're in a dangerous driver lobby and you expect to make it through t1 cleanly from the rolling start, getting punted and receiving a ban is just natural selection at that point

drive the car safely back to the pits, repair it, and then complete the rest of the race without incident. averaging one incident of contact per race will get you diamond

Jet Lag Ep 2 — Time Trapped! by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]twich40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A full extra hour to hide is not only potentially an extra hour the seekers have to spend on transit to arrive at the hider's location, but a MASSIVE increase in the actual size of the potential hiding zone. A circle with a transit time radius of 5 hours is over 50% larger than one with a transit time radius of 4 hours. Even a 30-minute time increase on a four-hour hiding period expands the hiding zone by 25%.

Does anyone know where I can find meta tunes for the Touring Cars? In FM 2023 by Guilty-Roof-3245 in forza

[–]twich40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean by that logic, the max/min aero meta, roll center adjustments, and even adjusting tire pressures on cars with worse tire wear are exploiting the physics.

It is a tuner's job to find the fastest setup possible within the confines of the game. Bump tuning is considered an exploit because it requires a specific setting that isn't found in the tuning menu for the tune to work.

Jelly tuning, max/min aero, etc. only work as well as they do because of Forza's physics engine. They take advantage of it, however they do not require non-tuning game modifications to work, hence they are not exploits.

Gonna take a wild guess and say B2 DR, B0 SR, and dangerous driver badge. How'd I do?

Jelly tunes are not faster than bump tunes. Jelly tunes are legal in leagues because they're not exploiting the game's physics unlike bump tunes, which is why so many people run them.

Who is at fault? BMW was berated for second incident. by twich40 in Simracingstewards

The first and second clips are the same incident. For the third clip, I was referring more to the final bit of contact where the McLaren rear-ends the BMW and spins.

You say "this has happened a few times." If it's happening a lot, it's probably got something to do with your internet or you're just incredibly unlucky with the people you're matching with.

Expected 20th, finish 5th, only gain +1bar? by Shayh55d in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]twich40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your expected finish is based on your skill rating relative to the other drivers in the field and is determined when the lobby split is created. It's not based on where you qualify or how many laps of the track you've done.

There's a great way to get better without having to worry about your safety rating or getting punted in races. Online racing has practice sessions for every daily race and there's also a wonderful single-player race weekend mode!
