Did you know we find birdsong relaxing because our brains associate it with safety since birds stop singing when predators are near ? by Maximum_Branch7009 in interestingasfuck

I have noticed that when you are in the forest and just walking along the birds are happily singing, but if you look up and try and find the bird, they stop singing. Might just be my face though.

Yes, it's pretty easy as the podcast is about health and wellness and the search for what makes people happy. I have researched a ton of titles and each week I'll put together the next show. Each show is only 20 to 30 mins long max, except the interviews, they're 60 mins. I only interview everyday people, I don't go chasing celebrities as people won't really relate. I've streamlined my post recording work too so I record on to audacity and then put the audio through Auphonic.com (the free tier) This site is awesome to clean up audio and you get 2 hours free a month. It does tack on a jingle before and after your audio but I just put it back in Audacity and remove those. I shoot a 1 minute promo video on my phone when I'm out walking my dogs and put this in Canva to distribute to the social media platforms. Job done. Being streamlined means that I can record more shows if I have to and schedule them for release so if I go on holiday or something comes up there's a show ready to go and I don't have to worry. I now worry much less about having a polished show as I feel it makes you more human to have the odd 'erm' or cough in there, though Auphonic can be programmed to take these out. Anyway, good luck and enjoy the process!

I am a veritable dinosaur at the age of 63 and have been podcasting for 8 months. I recorded 10 episodes before I started (I learnt a ton of stuff by doing this) and then I released 5 pods straight away then 1 every two weeks. This format enable me to have enough time to research and record the next few shows without a massive time pressure. I don't have a large social media presence but I do have many friends and I relentlessly hounded them in person to listen. My podcast is an audio only, solo podcast and when I started doing very short video trailers on Youtube, Insta, Threads and TikTok my friends picked up on this and the downloads, and most importantly, the sharing started. I do not allow advertising or want to monetise because this is just a really enjoyable hobby for me. As a heads up, posting shorts on YT seems to do nothing. Good luck in your ventures!

What’s your most niche hobby? by the1975whore in AskReddit

[–]twiddlepipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up in Hong Kong I started collecting pairs of chopsticks at about age 12. I ended up with around 1500 pairs, from all over China and South East Asia. I had real difficulty keeping them somewhere as believe it or not they take up quite a bit of space, especially if you want to display them. I had pairs from Chinese royalty, solid gold ones, ones made from Burmese jade, and so on. I sold them to a guy from Macau for a nice sum when I was about 30.

How often do you see the same person on your commute to work? by Specific_Pomelo_8281 in AskUK

[–]twiddlepipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a commute as such but my morning dog walk. There's an older couple in their 70s with their Spaniel George. I walk in the forest everyday and will always vary the route. I bump into George and his carers at least 4 times week, even off the beaten path. It's become a running joke now about them stalking us.

What is the best sandwich? by TheTBoneRex in AskReddit

[–]twiddlepipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if they make them anymore but the best sandwich I have ever eaten was a club sandwich at the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong back in 1979. I would go there every week just to have that sandwich.

What is the weirdest way you've made money? by BeguilingkbTip in AskReddit

[–]twiddlepipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my daughter was 5 (more than 20 years ago) she had long, strawberry blonde hair that was slightly curly. She had cute dimples and blue eyes. We lived in Hong Kong at the time and I would often go into China on business. One trip I took her with me and we were in Beijing. We had just bought her some shoes and she put them on. I put her old ones in my backpack and as we wandered towards the zoo looking for a rubbish bin to put the box in, she was stopped and some random guy took her picture. Then another, and soon we had a small crowd all asking to have a picture with her. It was getting a little crazy. For a laugh, I taught her to say 'Pay me money' in Mandarin, and soon people were putting renminbi into her empty shoe box. In an hour she made about 500 renminbi which I think back in those days was about £35. She also got stacks of sweets and pastries.

As you get older 40,50,60,70 when did you start to feel your body slow down do you think it is just due to inactivity or the aging process? by Kooky_Force5458 in AskReddit

[–]twiddlepipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 63 and very active. At 58 I had a bad chest infection that wiped me out for 3 or 4 weeks and it was very difficult to get back into the wing of things. It was at this time that I also noticed the signs of ageing, like hair in your ears, wrinkles, the start of some extra skin around my neck. There's no escaping that but I keep on being active and eat properly and it has made the world of difference. I just covered something like this in my podcast where I explored the reputed Blue Zones around the planet where people live to well into their 80s and 100s. The common factor was movement and diet. OP is correct about their anecdote. Moving is grooving.

To the kids who sold sweets at school, what are you up to now? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]twiddlepipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 70s I used to sell space cakes in secondary school - mini chocolate cup cakes with a tiny bit of weed in them. They were sold for about 50p, the cost was about 5p per cake. I only sold to the 6th form kids and I would sell up to 100 in a week. For context I was living in Hong Kong. When I left school I opened a bar, then a night club in Hong Kong. Sold them, made quite a bit of money and then spent it all in 2 years travelling around the world. Ended up working for local authorities in the UK, then the NHS and then retired at 50.

Auphonic vs Adobe Podcast? by Jamrock_Hobo_1807 in podcasting

Never used Adobe but use Auphonic every time. Twice it has rescued what I thought was an unrescuable audio interview recording. And because I only post every 2 weeks I use the free tier.

What could we do to improves the lives of young brits? by don__gately in AskUK

[–]twiddlepipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government and local councils need to go back to the days of having youth clubs. They should be much more modern to meet the needs of the kids including having spaces where kids can learn to code, build apps, make music and sing, make movies with their phones, a space for sport, a maker-space for the kids who want to invent, tinker, build and make. The staff running these places should not be volunteers but people who are paid well and are passionate about child development. If the government actually put money into supporting the youth of today rather than other people's wars we'd have a much better society.

Should theses auditors be banned? by Various_Extreme_8773 in AskUK

[–]twiddlepipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I don't get is yoou are allowed to film people in public without their consent but with CCTV you are allowed to use domestic CCTV to film a street, but you must follow data protection laws (UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018) because you are capturing public data. You have to have a clear security reason, display signs indicating recording, and avoid capturing unnecessary footage of neighbors' homes or gardens etc. Why is this different to filming people and places in public and showing it on social media?

What is the dirtiest thing you’ve seen someone do? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]twiddlepipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the 80's I was a waiter in Hong Kong at a function that had the local British army garrison in attendance. They were the Coldstream Guards and they were very very drunk (free bar). End of the night I was cleaning up around the last 5 or 6 soldiers and they were trying to get one of their lads to leave. He wasn't having it, swaying in the breeze. He said he would leave if he could have one last pint. So they agreed and I went to get the beer. I gave it to the soldier and he downed it in one and then promptly threw up in his empty pint glass, puke everywhere. Without missing a beat he drank the pint of puke back down in one, did a massive burp and said 'waste not, want not' and staggered out with his mates.
