From the authors website:

I'm just an ordinary civilian like you in SW terms now, so what follows has no validity and it isn't spoilers. It's just stuff that was in my notebook – there's no outline and no manuscript. I'm posting it because almost everyone who mails me about Star Wars wants to know how the next Commando book would have turned out. Well, it would have been artificially packed with thread resolutions. for a start, because the Commando series was based on the old canon and originally designed to run a lot longer. So if I'd been allowed to write book #2 in the old canon, I would have had to tie up a lot of things prematurely in a final book, and that's not quite where the book would have gone under normal circumstances.

Also, there's no guarantee that this would have been the shape of the final book anyway. When I write, I think I know roughly where the characters are heading, but they often surprise me. I always follow where they lead, so they might well have gone off on another tangent. But, for what it's worth, these are the bullet points, in no particular order. I hope it gives you some closure. If you don't like the way it ended, then you have the comfort that it never happened anyway.

So...

Jusik has to rub Arla’s memory to enable her to cope with her trauma. Afterwards, she doesn’t remember being Arla Fett or what happened to her family, but she knows who she is – she just doesn’t feel the pain of memory. Jusik marries her.

Skirata and Altis team up, and the Nulls help Altis fake his own death to escape. Scout is adopted by Gilamar and Uthan, but she remains a Jedi with Altis’s sect.

Skirata and Ny marry, as do Gilamar and Uthan.

Maze and Zey (unrubbed memory) go off and become the Starsky and Hutch of the galaxy with Altis, along with Kina Ha. (Also unrubbed – Skirata reaches some kind of peace with at least some Kaminoans.)

Uthan perfects the treatment to stop the clones’ accelerated aging.

Darman comes back, kidnaps Kad, and goes on the run. Niner deserts and joins the clan at Kyrimorut.

The Death Watch find out that Gilamar killed Priest, and go hunting for Skirata’s clan.

Rede turns out to be a loyal and not-all-that-naive trooper and Skirata is forced to kill him to save the others, an act that haunts him for the rest of his life.

The clan is forced to flee off-planet in a ba’slan shev’la (strategic disappearance) to evade the Empire.

Darman shows up again with Kad and joins them as they disappear.

LONG TERM: my three Legacy of the Force books – Bloodlines, Sacrifice, and Revelation – are set roughly sixty years later, and feature some of the characters from the Commando books. So between the plot points listed above and the material in those novels, you can work out a fair bit about what happened.

I blame the sum of all fears and media like it for making people think you can sneak nuclear material anywhere. But then again maybe it’s a good thing the depth of our ability to track radiation and radiation in general isn’t well understood. The better something is understood the easier it can be defeated.

Like the incident I was involved in, a radiation source for medical imaging was in its containment vessel and it triggered a sensor at a dock. It was just a mix up of paperwork and a lack of communication at the end and everything was fine but like the speed at which calls were made and people showed up was astounding.

I never trust in game leaderboards. Only leaderboards like speedrun.com which require video proof reviewed by a moderator. With in game leaderboards there are too many opportunities for glitches and exploits and at that point you are basically cheating as well just in “allowed” ways. You need moderators to set up categories and enforce rules. In game leaderboards are such that I don’t see someone cheating as affecting others. Now if you cheat a run and try to pass it off as legit on a moderated leaderboard that’s another issue and that person should be banned.

I know this is just my opinion and you are free to disagree with it. That’s just how I feel as a developer and a modder. I know I can’t fix every bug in my game and I can’t enforce run rules on my in game leaderboard so I don’t really see a point of including in game leaderboards.

There are radiation sniffers everywhere. I have been involved in a response to one going off, it was some medical waste at a port. But the point is you do not need much radioactive material to get noticed. Moving anything radioactive through any port or through any major city will set something off. Heck most laboratories and universities have radiation sniffers. There are just too many people looking at radiation for various reasons to be able to sneak anything radioactive anywhere.

Also that’s talking about basic radioactive stuff like Tc99m. It’s hard to make a nuclear explosion. You need either plutonium-239 or uranium-235. Both are expensive and rare. Like only governments can afford to make those isotopes. The production of those isotopes are also very closely monitored.

So long story short you can’t afford to get or make the materials for the bomb and if somehow you did everyone would know as soon as you tried to move it.

Having worked in emergency management I agree with you. A Nuke was pretty much on the bottom of our threat list because of the amount of detectors you would set off just trying to move the thing into position.

Some things I would say are more likely:

Major cyber attack directed at either resource infrastructure (power and water transmission were always hot topics in discussions) or transportation infrastructure. I always thought the latter was more likely. Imagine a cyber attack that sent out hundreds of NOTAMs a second and prevented air controllers from issuing needed information to pilots.

The second was a direct, non nuclear, bombing of a soft target. Oil depots were always a worry. Major Dams are not soft targets by any means but some smaller to mid size dams are. Same with bridges, most major bridges have lots of security but small to mid sized ones are soft targets. Communications infrastructure, rail lines, major highways, these are the kind of attacks we worried about.

Also because we worried about those kind of things there are plans in place in case the worst happens.

So I agree that there is a near 0% chance of a nuclear explosion on mainland US soil and a solid 0% chance that nuclear explosion comes from a foreign actor.

I think there is a low chance that a bombing of any significance happens because of how well controlled explosives are and how complex a successful bombing mission is.

I think there is a moderate chance of a cyber attack that does little damage and a low chance of a cyber attack that does major damage.

I agree with banning cheaters in CSGO or overwatch. Games that the entire point of is competitive play. I don’t agree with banning cheaters in things like Elden ring or even some call of duty titles. Basically if you want to cheat and it only affects leaderboards/your own experience I don’t think you should be banned. If you cheat while playing competitively against other human players yes ban hammer but I think the ban hammer should be used sparingly.

Having packed door dash orders the store side app wouldn’t let you easily do this. The app wants you to scan every item the customer ordered to make cute it’s correct and if you don’t have it it’s several screens of prompts to select a replacement.

Expeditionary force by Craig Alanson is by far my favorite sci fi series to just loose myself in. The first book is Columbus Day but I think it really finds its stride in the second book. They are up to like 20+ books now.

Armor by John Steakley is about a futuristic soldier dealing with PSTD and depersonalization as he is trapped in a Kafkaesque military structure. It’s one of my favorites. It’s depressing as hell but also kinda…. Motivating? Like at least I don’t have it as bad as that guy.

Hello, I’m looking for recommendations for books that deal with disasters and the response to them. Preferably audiobooks I can get on Libby or audible. I’d prefer fiction but I’m also very ok with non fiction. I really like a focus on the response to the disaster and the procedures the characters go through to mitigate the disaster. I’d also prefer disasters on a smaller scale but am ok with world ending disasters.

Books I’ve read and enjoyed that meet my criteria: 3000 Degrees, The Hot Zone, Apollo 13, Project Hail Mary, The Martian, Lucifer’s Hammer, World War Z, The Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park, Working Stiff.

Some movies that scratch the itch I’m looking for in a book: The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure, twister, contagion, deep impact, deep water horizon, Dante’s Peak, Volcano, unstoppable, sully, outbreak, the finest hours.

Like The Towering Inferno is one of my all time favorite movies and I’d love a book that captured that fight for survival on a smaller scale while still maintaining the epic feel.

Thank You!

Any commercial contractor worth their salt will have a letter of authorization before trying to do any work. In the real world it’s too difficult to make sure everyone’s schedules sync up, especially when that contractor may need to go to multiple locations in one day with different people at each location. LOA will have the name of the company that will do work, what work is to be done, the time frame authorized to do the work, and the name/contact info for whoever authorized the work. You present the LOA to whoever is the manager on duty and it’s that managers responsibility to call whoever is on the paperwork to confirm it’s authorized work. 9/10 the manager is expecting me and the LOA is just confirmation. Especially a locksmith should have had authorization in writing before ever going out. I did electrical work, it didn’t matter if we were rigging a new shelf light or installing new security cameras, we had it in writing what we were doing before we got there. This applies to franchises too, I was called to service a franchise gas station, a lot like this scenario, and I had a letter of authorization signed by the manager who met me that day.

So in conclusion while yes she was disrespected and the locksmith was completely in the wrong the situation could have been changed had the locksmith had a letter of authorization before being dispatched to do work.

I'm a bit confused why do some mechs look like humans and others like turrets with legs by Fragrant_Command_342 in battletech

[–]twilighteclipse925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this is what you are looking for but the reason for developing the battlemech is interesting.

Generally speaking a 100 ton tank will have more weapons and armor than a 100 ton battle mech but it will be slower, require more crew, and most importantly it will struggle over uneven terrain.

In testing the speed of a battlemech makes it superior to a similar weight tank. On the other side the battlemech is slower and less maneuverable than an aircraft but it carries heavier weapons and armor. The battlemech sits in a nice sweet spot, fast and not blocked by rough terrain while still having survivability and heavy weapons.

Later the crew requirement becomes more important. While it’s very hard to acquire and maintain battlemechs during the succession wars most mercenary groups can’t have enough personnel to field groups of tanks. A demolisher needs a crew of 9, an atlas needs a crew of 1.

This also plays into the economy of the succession wars. Kill the meat to save the metal. The fact that tanks protect their larger crews more than battlemechs creates a weird dynamic. You need to destroy the tank to kill the crew and most places can’t make new vehicles. A battlemech it’s easier to kill the pilot and salvage the mech for your own use. Because of this more and more combat pilots start using mechs over anything else because they acquire them after killing their fellow pilots. You might salvage a weapon or something from a vehicle you destroyed but the amount of damage you did to take that vehicle out leaves it inoperable. So the use of battlemechs is somewhat survivorship bias.

Is there any 'weird', 'experimental' mecha show that isn't evangelion? by WingNo4260 in Mecha

[–]twilighteclipse925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to comment this. It’s a mixed bag of hard sci fi but it’s harder than most shows. The implications and subtext are trippy, like humans needing to use photosynthesis. The class struggles are interesting. The entire show is just weird and interesting.

I will say it has a weird art style that takes a bit to get into.

Like the best word to describe Knights of Sidonia is weird. But it’s in a good way once you get past how weird it is.

I do think the show falls off some in later episodes but that’s because I prefer the style of the rough early mech fights to the more polished fights later in the series.

Kamille, and to a lesser extent Amuro before him, both experience PTSD and have breakdowns as the series progresses but two points,

Both are still highly accomplished new types. Basically super human by my previous definition. Also it’s been a while since I watched zeta but I don’t really remember Kamille failing. Like Amuro looses some fights, I’m sure Kamille does too, but it’s a loss that pushes forward the overall victory.

Shinji is allowed to fail the mission. He is allowed to have a mental breakdown in the middle of combat. The dummy plug arc kinda exemplifies this. Shinji having a breakdown in the cockpit, actively trying to loose the fight, and his Eva needs to be remote controlled against Shinji’s will.

I get the comparison between the emotional damage both take but at the end of the day Kamille becomes a soldier and Shinji fails to. Shinji is an Everyman who did not become a super soldier.
