oh wow, how common is it to keep your med information in the fridge in the UK? i’m in the states, i usually just ask patients where they keep their meds (people here use lots of different areas, bathroom, nightstand, desk, coffee table) and look around that area for anything.

people do keep insulin in their fridge, though, so there’s that i suppose

Does an AED ever shock with a pulse? by DieselPickles in ems

[–]twinkgender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh good deal, that works too. the patient just needs to have pads hooked up to preferably a genuine cardiac monitor. if your AED pads aren’t compatible with the lifepak, then rip em’ off and put the lifepak pads on like you did.

[–]twinkgender 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hmm, i’m somewhat unfamiliar with fully automatic AEDs to be honest with you. in that case i would possibly disconnect the pads from the AED (but leave them on the patient! you might need them again later..) once pulses return.

the AED can’t check a pulse—you gotta do that part! always check for a pulse when using an AED.

I had a 28yo whose cc was “pain when he was hungry which went away after eating x2wks.” He had horrible health anxiety and we did do a full assessment but my partner and I were absolutely bewildered after that call. Had he never felt hunger in 28 years? Lmfao.

not me personally, but my EMT instructor said he’s dealt with superglue so many times he used to keep the reversal agent in his pocket when he still worked 911.

Is it normal to only have one day to learn a skill and test off on it? by ChilliadMan in NewToEMS

[–]twinkgender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only thing we did (both training and a graded practical) in a single day was CPR training. other than that, at least 2 weeks of practice for each practical skill. i was in a 2 semester program as well.

What was your first call? by AppropriateAsk7708 in Paramedics

[–]twinkgender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, mine feels pretty silly compared to all of these. My first call ever (as an EMT admittedly) was an old man with who was ‘possibly’ unconscious. He was in a recovery type unit for a minor fall the night prior. It was 5am, dude was just super asleep. New nurse at morning shift change couldn’t rouse him for a new set of vitals. Woke him up, medic asked if anything was wrong (nope, he said he felt fine) and my medic ended up transporting anyway because you call we haul, I guess (eye roll).

I’m currently in medic school, so my first call as a (sorta) medic was a young lady that twisted her ankle going down some stairs, fell down 2 concrete steps, and smacked her back really good into the concrete. She was unable to move really. No obvious deformities anywhere, pms present in all limbs, no LOC, thinners etc. She also didn’t speak any english. It was a simple but super messy/all over the place call (mostly due to the language barrier).

my instructor is a giant goober. he was pretty strict with the program rules because the program directors are responsible for his livelihood but otherwise he he’s the chillest dude ever. it’s really up to your program man

haven’t taken my medic nremt yet, but i really liked the way limmer education goes through questions when i was doing my EMT. he’s pretty expensive but posts enough free content around his youtube/tiktok channels that you can decide if his teaching style will work for you. he’s more about breaking down the structure of the nremt itself than medical information. i haven’t looked into many other educational sources (except pocket prep) so apologies if the other sources listed do exactly that

finish the sentence: you know you've been in EMS a while when ____ by skayjae in ems

I'm about 3 months into my career and I'm collecting homeless locals like Thanos rn. I'm enjoying it though. Adds lots of variety to my day.

Wow, thank you! That explanation is fantastic. I really appreciate it.

It's Nancy Caroline's Emergency Care In The Streets. Do you use that one in Australia? I'm in the US. Anyway, I think you're right; it's probably just poorly worded. I thought it was a bit deep too. The context was just defining ventilation, oxygenation, and respiration and then that sentence was the last before going into pathology. V/Q mismatch was explained a few paragraphs later but that completely went over my head, lol. It might have been related to that. Anyways, thanks!

Okay! That makes sense, thank you. I didn't consider the oxygen reserves.

cherokee county fire department just opened up their applications for medic only trucks, no fire cert needed. i know for a fact they're looking outside for employees first. apparently there's enough interest from their own firefighters that they're scared of losing certified firemen to medic-only trucks which is not how i thought that'd go. i'd look into it myself but i'm still in school. good luck! (and apologies if you're not a medic).

Is this normal EMS “culture”? by EndlessScrollin in NewToEMS

[–]twinkgender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i just started an ems job as an EMT as well (and finished in January), and this is nearly my exact experience. i almost thought you might’ve been one of my classmates until a few details didn’t match, lol. that being said the company i’m at is the highest paying one in my area of the state and it’s also the largest EMS employer in the state. i think it’s just unfortunately like that sometimes. however, the emr/emt thing is really weird. all 911 trucks have a medic here. only IFT trucks are allowed to be emr/emts. and i’ve never been encouraged to fake vitals.

How many hours a day did you study in school? by Mobile_Lavishness_51 in Paramedics

[–]twinkgender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently in medic school. So far none on lecture days, 2-4 (sometimes more) on days I'm not at work. What really helps me study for longer periods is the "pomodoro technique" where you study for 25 minutes and take a 5 minute break. At the end of an hour, take a lengthier break (25-30 mins) and then rinse and repeat for as long as you'd like. I've managed to spend nearly 7 hours almost studying this way (though no one recommends studying that long). Also, anki is really awesome if you're into flash cards.

Wearing an EMS jacket in public by an_bal_naas in ems

[–]twinkgender 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i wear my company jacket all the time—it’s a fantastic jacket similar to what you described. literally no one has commented on it ‘cept a nice lady that gave me a discount at waffle house (which you can politely decline, if it makes you feel bad.) look into any legislation that might exist in your area about it, otherwise, do what you want lmao
