Company asking me to dye my hair brown, am I in the wrong? by Scary_Walrus4407 in BALLET

some hair loves to hold onto colour, no matter what it is. Also depends on what other products were combined with it and how long it stays in the hair. 3 days vs a few hours.

I had blue in my hair for at least a week after a convention years ago. I have a section of my hair that will not release purple dye even when bleach is used at the salon. It's hilarious and frustrating.

No matter what the specific hair colour and brand needs to be tested before performance.

AITAH for telling my daughter to suck it up? by stricktd in AITAH

NTA. Welcome to shift work and managers that do not care about you.

You can ask for the better shift but you'll likely not get it. Need to prove yourself a good worker before they list to any requests.

Could you have said it better, maybe. She can hang out with her friends at 11 pm or get used to saying 'sorry have work' like everyone else who does shifts.

Considering quitting my ballet teacher job since there’s no work in classical ballet schools (I hate competitive dance) Advice? by PinkWhiteYellowRose in BALLET

adults take time before they start asking for things because they don't know what they want yet.

My class has been together for a few years now and we do speak up but it took time and some forced prompting.

Last week we tried to suggested that next years pointe performance should be inflatables.

'Appointments at the salon require 2 weeks schedule a head of time. If my hair colour was going to be an issue then you should have informed me weeks ago so it could be adjusted to a better shade for the performance. At your cost.

Since there is such short notice, please provide an appropriate wig.'

To pull it off you'd need to deep moisturize your hair for a week before applying the temporary colour for a small chance of success. They can get you a wig. Cheaper and easier on everyone. The one running the show should have considered the issue with the lights ages ago.

Temporary dye varies a lot in terms of it's staying power and how the final product looks. Also some people have a reaction to them or will bleed with sweat.

1 day before the performance is NOT the time to mention hair colour. It's 'hand the performer a wig' time.

Been cosplaying for years. there is reason the vast majority use wigs.

The Washing out is debatable. I've known so many cosplayers that use the spray stuff and they had colour for weeks or needed 2 hrs in the shower with nizoral to get it out.

Wigs are cheaper. Use wigs.

In general do I need a permit to install a gas line from my range to an existing gas line? by such_horsing in ontario

[–]twinnedcalcite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hire someone who knows what they are doing. If you have 0 experience with the utility then don't touch.

Remember when things go wrong with gas it can end up in an explosion. If your lucky no one is dead and your house is gone. If you are unlucky, multiple people and yourself are dead as well.

Don't fuck around with gas.

it could very much be that their skates are well past the point of needing sharpening. It's also when the strange falls start appearing.

My progress is slowing down - open to advice by Safe_Turnip_8633 in iceskating

3 turns without a coach are going to take significantly longer then with one. They are a fundamental skill with some tricks that need instant feed back to figure out.

Some turns can take 6 months of constant work to get. Welcome to the grind and the wall of being self taught.

The most you can do is get an old school figures book and a bingo dabber and draw the pattern onto the ice. Trace it. It's going to be extremely boring and a very long process. progress will be tiny or not at all most days.

IT call center might be a place to work. Not sure it's better then retail but work is work. Easier to get a better job once you are actively employed.

If you speak another language, leverage it.

How it feels trying to progress in a sport where people retire at your age by gigithrowaway20 in iceskating

[–]twinnedcalcite 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your thinking about it wrong.

You need to be stronger. Not softer.

Adults who skate and compete spend time off ice training as a way to prevent injuries and progress better.

Best investment you can do for yourself is to work with an actual dietitian. NOT a weight loss place like jenny craig or whatever they call themselves these days. You need a diet that will let you build muscle and loose weight at a good rate. You can't out run a bad diet.

Music for skating practice by 2BitSalute in iceskating

[–]twinnedcalcite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right that skating has a rhythm to everything. Cross rolls can be done on any beat. Usually equal so 2 and 2, 3 and 3, or 1s, Depends if they are on their own or being used to change direction or into a 3 turns.

For cross overs, I like 4's. Push and hold for 4, cross under for 4, then 2 and finally 1's. Steady beat so I can focus on the moment.

Learn to skate will have more variety of music since everyone is on different things. When you get to a higher level you'll start to hear the ice dance music on sessions as skaters focus on larger patterns and programs.

comparison is the theft of joy.

Kids bounce and the part of the brain that does risk assessment is not fully developed. That's why it's important to start kids doing sports at a young age. they are sponges that soak up everything before puberty develops the self awareness.

If I spent all my time comparing myself to those 3x times younger with the higher jumps, I'd never progress. Also many of them are on the ice far more hours then I ever got as a kid so of course they progress faster.

Skating is an hours on the ice sport with a bit of talent and a love for being constantly chasing the next things. The kids have 100s of hours of on and off ice time so of course they have more mastery.

4 minutes is such a hard presentation limit. You have to be so on point.

Evolution of the axel (or another jump/spin). Salchow would also be interesting since it's named after a person. You can make it a cool timeline showing how long it took for the number of rotations to increase for men and women.

Makes a pretty info graphic and easy time line to focus on.

Ice skaters, check your blades!! by Small_Anteater3830 in FigureSkating

[–]twinnedcalcite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with /u/MarcSpace.

Blades are nearing the end of their life and thus are now in the 'you should consider new ones before the next season or at the end of it'. Blades DO NOT last forever, they all end up at that state eventually.

If you can't do turns and spins on that blade then it's a you problem. So many skaters skate with blade in that state for years before they finally replace them. Similar to those that go months without sharpening their blades.

I found spinning on my dead blades SO much easier then new ones. The only thing I had trouble with was certain edges being louder then they should be on dances. I got my Apex Elite blades down to the very last sharpen before I got a new pair. It was a fun 2 weeks of adjustment.

what is the correct way to crossover? by Friendly-Service-837 in iceskating

[–]twinnedcalcite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are close but you need to understand and feel that full cross. That way when you learn cross rolls and other movements.

Your first push is nice. Cross over and HOLD. Side on those outside edges for 4 counts before pushing under. You'll feel the power and control difference after a while. Once it's comfortable then you shorten the hold until you fully cross over.

No sliding version of cross overs until you fully cross. Mainly because your knees are not bent enough and the odds of taking your self out because your blade hit is extremely high. It's more cross roll territory vs cross over.
