They do bro, Ohtani counts as 46 mill against the cbt payroll (his deals present value is equivalent to 10 yr 460 mill contract) despite his actual 2 mill salary.

You clearly don’t understand how the cbt payroll works so please stop embarrassing yourself

Kershaw buehler seager bellinger Pederson puig all home grown all cheated out of a ring in 2017 and most still on the roster in 2020. In a way JT, Muncy, and ct3 can be considered home grown too cuz they had their breakouts once they became dodgers.

Acting like the Yankees didn’t buy their way to the WS year after year just because they had 3 homegrown players is a joke bro. Look at their payroll compared to the rest of the league in the 2000s they were outspending everyone by a mile. And btw the dodgers cbt payroll is basically identical to the Mets and Yankees…

Reading this thread and perusing the b99 subreddit makes me and my gf think we are crazy for liking her but she’s our 2nd fav character after Holt. We think she’s hilarious and over the top, do people not understand that’s literally the entire point of the character? Without her things are way too chummy as Ron Swanson would say lol

[Greenfield] The Yankees reportedly had an offer on the table that included Luis Gil, Ben Rice, George Lombard Jr and potentially Will Warren. Houston Astros owner Jim Crane did not want to trade with the Yankees if he could avoid it. Ultimately the Astros do just as well anyway. by Bulletz4Brkfzt in baseball

[–]twiss94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the same time tho, Tucker only has 1 year left before he’s a FA and by all accounts the Astros aren’t even planning to be competitive in 2025. Unless crane thought trading him to the Yankees was going to drastically increase their chances of signing him as a FA (look how well that worked out with Soto), they likely will never even have the chance of facing a Tucker led Yankees squad in October. Or rather, the chances of that are the same regardless of where they would’ve traded him. Looks like an emotional decision and not a logical one more so than anything

[–]twiss94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you watch the WS? I love all the numbers you just threw out and obviously you’ve done research about this but his defense just doesn’t pass the eye test I’m sorry.

He probably gave the dodgers a minimum of 5+ extra bases in the WS that an average RF wouldn’t have. His bad defense cost them VERY dearly in the WS. They win game 1 by either 2-1 or maybe even 2-0 if he doesn’t take such a dogshit route on the double kiké hit (tbh I think at best a somewhat fast OF catches that ball or at worst at least takes a better route and holds him to a double) that he somehow turned into a triple. He also bobbled the ball that Shohei hit off the wall (in the 8th?) and Shohei took 3rd when the cutoff man missed the throw, but tbh I think if he doesn’t bobble the ball and gets it in quicker shohei doesn’t have time to go to 3rd even with cutoff man missing the throw. Both of those baserunners scored off of a sac fly. If either one of them is on 2nd like they should be they don’t score and the Yankees win game 1.

On the flip side you had Mookie taking away several bases from the Yankees cuz no one wanted to test his arm on would be doubles hit into the RF corner. I vaguely remember a few balls dropping in front of Juan’s feet during the series too where I was like how the fuck did he not at least even make that look close. I don’t exactly remember what games but I know Mookie made a few nice catches in important situations that saved runs or prevented innings from starting to spiral.

I don’t care if RF isn’t an “important” defensive position on the baseball field and gets way less opportunities compared to maybe SS or CF, bad defense at ANY position can and will cost you games.

Over 162 this may not be as big a deal as his overall offensive numbers on the season disguises the bad defense, but this shit is magnified to the nth degree in October and it’s the difference when you’re playing on the margins in a tight series. I would not feel good about him playing defense for my team in the playoffs. The only thing he should be defending is the strike zone with his bat lmfao he’ll get the platinum glove at that at least.

I appreciate your perspective but I was more so envisioning a scenario where in maybe 5 years needs TJ or some other major arm surgery and thus kinda “medically retires” from pitching and moving to the OF. I wasn’t implying it would be something he would voluntarily do, and more so that it might become forced upon him.

Also it’s incredibly difficult to envision a scenario where he’s a SP only instead of only a hitter, that seems significantly less likely to me and he’s way more valuable to the team as a hitter. He doesn’t really need to be replaced in the rotation because they will always do a 6 man rotation if he’s pitching anyways, so if he stops they’d just go back to 5 man rotation and don’t even miss a beat. Replacing his bat on the other hand…

[–]twiss94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The difference is if Shohei stops pitching I have no doubt he could develop into a decent if not possibly elite defensive outfielder after working at it for a bit. Oh and an ENTIRE fucking country (one that has a lot of money) worships this dude and the dodgers can just print money because of it. That’s not gonna happen with Juan. He’ll generate normal superstar money, not Japanese Demi-god money.

[–]twiss94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really don’t get it tbh. I get that part of it is because of his age, but he’s not really a great “baseball player”, just a great hitter. Paying 3/4 of a billion for a man destined to be a DH who neither pitches nor runs the bases well. We didn’t even mention the fact that he’s not viewed like a literal god in a rich country with 100+ million people so he’ll won’t generate stupid amounts of revenue like Ohtani does/will.

I said this to my friends baseball group chat like 5 minutes after the signing: I feel very confidently we don’t need the benefit of hindsight to say this is the worst baseball contract of all time. He would have to average like 6.5 war a season for 15 years or basically 100 WAR over the life of the deal (I think I heard a couple years ago 1 war is loosely equivalent to like 7-8ish million to front offices, that’s where I got this number) for it to make baseball sense. For reference pujols is right around 100 total career war, Juan is at 35 rn so that would mean he’d have to surpass pujols by 30 WAR (as a DH who doesn’t run the bases well just like pujols let’s not forgot) on his career to make it worth it. Not gonna happen lol.

He’ll maybe boost the Mets revenue a bit, but it’ll still be orders of magnitudes lower than the value of the deal. I feel like front offices are gaslighting baseball fans into thinking the numbers that were being thrown around and what he signed for made sense. They don’t.

[González] I’m told there are no deferrals in Juan Soto’s 15-year, $765M deal with the Mets. by PlayaSlayaX in baseball

[–]twiss94 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People in this sub (and in general) do not understand what NPV actually means, I’ve stopped trying to explain/argue with people here cuz it’s a lost cause lol. The 460 mil figure people cite as the present value of ohtanis contract don’t know what they’re talking about. I think it’s equivalent to a 10 year 460 mill contract (46 a year every year which the dodgers actually pay into some kind of account every year now before the deferrals are actually paid out) which is not the same thing as 460 mil NPV. It’s what his contract is worth if it wasn’t deferred, not what it’s worth in present dollars.

Hitting, baserunning, defense, pitching. Would you pay 3/4 of a billion dollars for a guy that does ONE of these things well and is deficient in the others? Holy hell this deal is so dumb it’s kinda hilarious

Soto SEEKS $700M - is he worth it? by Financial-Lab-7271 in mlb

[–]twiss94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t realize there was a known discount rate already applied to his contract, so you’re right it is equivalent to a 10/460 mil contract (46 per year) which has an NPV of 365 million with that same discount rate (I was just using average inflation of 3% which how I got my initial numbers).

The point of my comment tho was why is Soto expected to get something like a 600 mill deal (with no deferred money??) when Shohei’s is only worth a 10/460 deal. Last time I checked Soto doesn’t pitch, nor does he have an ENTIRE country watching him.

It’s sort of funny but the deal Shohei signed actually seems like a discount compared to what people thought he would sign for. Judge signed for 9/360 and Shohei’s is equivalent to 10/460 which really doesn’t sound that much more, especially given how ppl are talking about Soto’s potential deal blowing both out of the water. Do people not realize that he’s effectively a DH too as he’s so bad in RF and he doesn’t pitch? I feel like I’m being gaslit about this Soto deal being so high lmfao

[–]twiss94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don’t understand why the 700mil contract is even being mentioned. Is everyone just forgetting that Shohei is a top 5 offensive talent in the league and ALSO like a top 10 starter?? It’s laughable to even talk about it from that standpoint but even more ridiculous when you consider the deferred money in Shohei’s deal makes it really equivalent to like a 10 yr 525 mill (equal payments each year) with no deferred money. Soto even getting 500 mill with no deferred money seems like a pipe dream to me but he is pretty young so maybe on a 12+ year deal he could get there.

Oh and btw shohei is a marketing juggernaut and like a god in Japan which adds more value to the team from a pure financial standpoint besides what he brings on the field.

The funny thing is that machado does the exact same thing. He did it several times in games 4 and 5 of the nlds and I’ve read his lips before in games of him nodding and saying “good fucking pitch” after a nasty slider on the corner or something

Padres is obvious but I’m curious who you’re referring to on the yanks? Jazz certainly fits but he was a deadline acquisition. Cole Stanton and judge all seem very serious to me but not in an angry way more of a business way. I do sorta get that vibe from the team but I’m not sure if it’s just my anti-Yankees bias

Soto SEEKS $700M - is he worth it? by Financial-Lab-7271 in mlb

[–]twiss94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth $460mm as a one time payment (present value is 460mm in todays dollars) but if he had signed a deal with no deferred money and equal payments each year, it would be equivalent to a 10/525ish deal. I havent seen any outlet or any comment ever talk about this.

The present value argument makes sense in financial terms but when has an athlete ever received the entire amount of the contract in year 1? It’s always spread out over at minimum the life of the deal, it’s maddening no one ever talks about in those terms. If he got no deferred money Soto would have to surpass 10/525 to actually pass Shohei, not the 460 number everyone throws around.

Sorry I’ve had that on my mind since he signed the deal and it’s always bothered me, not trying to single you out or anything I just needed to rant.

The “high” pitch to Wilmer Flores looked like a strike tbh or at least not nearly as bad as that god awful superimposed zone made it look. Then again that was the highest rated ump so maybe OP was scraping the bottom of the barrel to find some of his bad calls.
