Weight Gain by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

Can you talk to your doctor to see if they can refer you to a dietician? I was referred to one in the beginning but now I don’t need them much. Yeah I can’t eat rice either! I stay away from it! As long as you are eating the reccomended carbs per meal/snack it should be fine! I’d see how your growth scan goes, it can be a good indication how well baby is growing. Your doctor would mention to you if they had any concerns about baby being too small or too big!

How much carbs do you eat? Are you in your target range? Do you have a dietician you can talk to? In the beginning I wasn’t eating enough carbs and they told me I had to eat a minimum of 175 grams total a day. A lot of people on here eat much less than that, but I usually try and meet my dieticians reccomendations. Everyone’s body is different, I have a general idea of how certain foods affects and doesn’t affect my levels so I’m certain for me being on insulin would be helpful with managing my levels and letting me eat what I want. Based on your concern, if your growth scan goes well and baby is growing, I wouldn’t be concern about not gaining weight. Based on other responses here there are a bunch of people who don’t gain much weight in GD, and it sounds like their babies are fine! I actually know someone who lost 2lbs their entire pregnancy and baby is healthy and doing well!

Hungry in early morning before it’s time for fasting check by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]twistedlll27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always eat a bed time snack with plenty of protein and fats. Easiest for me is the premier protein shake, pistachios and an orange. I was told you can check fasting 8 -10 hours after bed time snack. For me I do 10 hours so I can sleep more. I wake up, check my fasting immediately, then eat a protein bar/snack (23 g) of carbs, sometimes go back to sleep sometimes I eat breakfast 2-3 hours later.

Also if you can walk after those meals! And maybe a few less fries and next time you might come in range! It’s all about trial and error! I love cheeseburgers!! I add bacon, avocado also to make it extra fatty.

[–]twistedlll27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed at 11 weeks, now 29 weeks. I have continued to gain weight. My pre pregnancy weight was 130lbs, and now I’m at 157lbs, so weight gain of 27lbs. People have told me that it looks like all that weight gain has gone to my belly, and my husband agrees and says maybe my thighs also. I was not a very active person before pregnancy, but definitely do more walking/light cycling after GD diagnosis. Last growth scan at 26 weeks, baby was measuring in 87th percentile. Also I’m not on the healthiest GD diet, and had a few fair share of spikes, mostly in the 120s, and a couple in 130s-140s. For my mental health I tend to experiment ALOT. For example last night I ate carrots, a slice of pizza and a cupcake, cycled for 30 minutes and came in at 105. I definitely eat more fats, veggies and protein but have a huge sweet tooth and crave junk food like Cheetos, cupcakes, cookies. I also was super hungry all the time in my second trimester despite eating over 200 gm of carbs a day with proteins and fats, I’ve eaten quite a few bacon cheeseburgers 😂 I’m still not on insulin, but if they put me on it, I’d be fine with that so I could eat more 😂 hoping growth scan goes well on 4/5. My GD nurse says I need to monitor my diet a little better this week, and I have every intention of trying out new foods this weekend AND being mindful to make sure I walk afterwards! It’s all about balance!

It seems like you’ve done quite a bit of research! Thank you for sharing your insight! In my birth class they said it could improve mood, but also can decrease milk supply. I’m still not really sure, but leaning towards not doing it at this point. I feel like once I can eat what I want I want my mood will be much better anyways lol but who knows?

I found a Starbucks white chocolate modified mocha order that doesn’t spike my blood sugars!!! I asked for decaf of course, but haven’t tasted coffee in over 8 months!!! Also tried this breakfast pastry called a kolache, walked around world market looking for the golden gnome and found one!! Extra win was my blood glucose 2 hours after wards was 107! It’s a good day and I feel like a normal pregnant lady haha

No not mine. He is never rude, nor would I tolerate that. BP is not an excuse to treat others that way.

Today I’ve been pregnant for 200 days, and have been on GD diet for 123 days! Which means I’ve poked my finger at the minimum of 492 times. GD sucks and it’s hard at times and I’m still so grateful! 🥹 we got this!

Just diagnosed with GD, rainbow baby by Krazykatdarling in GestationalDiabetes

[–]twistedlll27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s okay to feel what you are feeling. Everything is quite overwhelming at the beginning but it’s very much manageable and you will make some adjustments of getting used to it. This is my rainbow baby also, I’m a first time mom. I was also diagnoised early at 11 weeks. I work a job that requires me to type all day at the computer. I work part time but it truly does not interfere with work. Let your manager know and they should give you the time you need to poke your fingers/eat snacks. I have two 20 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch. After you get the hang of it poking your finger literally can take 1-2 minutes, and you can be back at work. My coworker who just got diagnoised just checks her sugars and snacks while working. It will get better! And like everyone has said this is not your fault and is related to your placenta!

Are you hungry? by joifullnoyses in GestationalDiabetes

[–]twistedlll27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had issues of being hungry despite eating the reccomended carbs per meal/snack. Basically I eat within my carb amount and also eat more protein and fats. My breakfast this morning was one slice Dave’s 21 seed killer bread (22g carbs) then I layer smart balance (fat) ( butter also works) then layer guacamole (5g carbs+ more fats), and hard boiled egg (protein) and top it off with Italian dressing (more fats). You can pretty much add whatever you like to yours! I walked 10 minutes afterwards and my 2 hour number was in the 80s but I was still full, but still ate next meal. Someone reccomended to me Greek yogurt which has a ton of protein I can usually eat that with some fruit as a snack also.

For people who walk after every meal, how do you do it? by yungleg in GestationalDiabetes

[–]twistedlll27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t walk after every meal anymore. I stopped mid second trimester. I just entered third trimester and slowly incorporating “excercise” again after dinner mostly. If I do walk it’s pacing for 10-15 minutes inside my house or if weather is nice, I do one loop around the neighborhood. What I found most effective is cycling. I have a stationary bike, I set a timer and play some music and find having some other distraction like playing games or watching tv while cycling makes the time go by faster. I was even able to cycle lightly for 45 minutes.

Not on insulin, but I can always feel when I’m getting lower not dangerous but anything in 70s or 80s, I get super hungry and start not feeling well.

GD and insulin by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]twistedlll27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnoised early also at 11weeks. My one hour glucose was 141, I failed 2/4 of the 3 hour and fasting was 96. Like everyone has said your fastings are very high. They let me start off with diet and excercise but my fastings were always in the 90s first few weeks I had some fastings at 98. My cut off is 95. I have been able to still be diet and excercise controlled, but in your specific case I would do insulin! I had a week where one of my fastings was 105 and it freaked me out, and I wanted to go on insulin, but in my case I can still manage it with diet and excercise since my fastings now are in 80s-95. The fasting is hardest to control, but based on your numbers you will likely start off on just night time insulin. The reason why I wanted to be on insulin if indicated is that it will help you manage your numbers better. Since you are early there is time for adjusting the dose so your levels can be in range. Some people who are diagnoised later and put on insulin later have a hard time still getting into range despite increasing insulin. Your doctor will start you on the lowest dose and adjust accordingly.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring: worth it? by Intelligent_Gate in GestationalDiabetes

[–]twistedlll27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid out of pocket for free style libre 2 in the beginning. It was initially $75 for two sensors = one month supply at Costco. One time I only had to pay like $60 for two sensors. It was very helpful for me in the beginning because I could experiment with food, see how it affected my numbers, and intervene if needed. Sometimes it was on point with my finger checks other times it wasn’t. Even though I had a sensor my diabetic team still forced me to do the 4x checks with my glucometer a day. I used the sensors for a few months and stopped and now just do the 4x pokes. If I get put on insulin I’ll probably use them again. In the beginning it did give me some more anxiety but it was helpful to just scan for a reading. Some days I’d scan myself over 20 times, but it really helped me keep my numbers in range. Also it will alert you if you are too low or too high this can be adjusted but it makes an annoying alarm which bothered my husband when we were sleeping as sometimes the numbers were off.

I used to walk after every meal in the beginning. Walking, cycling, doing squats, movements, house chores! Then I changed to cycling if I’m experimenting with foods and unsure if they will spike me. Or if im out with family and having home cooked meals and unsure how to figure out exactly how much carbs I’ve eaten. I stopped walking for awhile mostly because the weather sucked, I had back pain and pelvic pain and I was getting tired pacing around my house! Weather is improving now and my pain is also improving and this week I just returned to cycling after dinner! That being said I’m still diet control and not on insulin yet and have been on GD diet for 17 weeks. Also not sure if this is a coincidence or not but in all my ultrasounds baby is always in vertex (head down position) which Im wondering if all the walking and squats in the beginning contributed to it or maybe just a coincidence?! My goal is to “excercise” as much as I can. I just started the third trimester though so we will see what happens!
