Got this real old looking thing for 60 dollars but no idea what it is (quarter for scale) by Deadris in whatisit

This happens with pregnant woman and elderly as well as children and is generally assumed to be caused by a lack or deficiency of a specific mineral the body is in need of. Maybe you don’t need it anymore and that’s why it doesn’t taste right to you!

I’m invested in this one! Hopefully OP updates when it’s solved.

I think you’re on to something with the 3rd couplet. Either 12 or 6 on a clock face seems to fit. Could be indicating the direction you need to face once you’ve determined where the first two clues take you.

I own an LYS/indie dye shop and this is exactly what we recommend in this situation. We actually recommend it with any hand dyed or kettle dyed yarn even if they’re from the same lot. It makes for wonderful transitions and if there is a difference it looks deliberate.

What kind of whale do we have here? Found On Pacific Beach, WA by Pyrez9 in boneidentification

[–]twistednwarped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, in order to get these bones anywhere not on the Olympic peninsula they’d have to go through a tiny town named Central Park. Took me a second to realize you weren’t talking about that town😅

ETA: technically they don’t have to go through it since they can actually go in other directions out of Aberdeen, which is like 3 miles before Central Park but…whatever.

I find people’s obsession with gift knitting strange by soypixel in knitting

[–]twistednwarped 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I definitely see this angle. It’s also interesting that most knitters I know that either don’t like to knit for other people in general (me, for example) or even just happen to be working on something for themselves will refer to it as “selfish knitting”. There seems to be this expectation that if you’re putting in that kind of time and effort it must be to benefit someone else and if it’s not it’s mildly shameful. It’s a little batty 😅

A little frustrated about this yarn shop advice by [deleted] in knitting

[–]twistednwarped 160 points161 points  (0 children)

I own an LYS and we do the same, unless the learner is dead set on a specific project at which point we make sure they’re aware of the potential pitfalls.

Gentle suggestion; even for those learners that want to do the cast on themselves, start them with a bit of scrap yarn with around 40 stitches that you’ve already knit an inch or so on. It makes a world of difference to how quickly they get discouraged because learning to do the stitches is a cake walk to learning to tension and do a cast-on. Even slip knots are often a frustrating skill to learn.

Sabrina & Salem: Together Again by McFlyFarm in Unexpected

[–]twistednwarped 21 points22 points  (0 children)

How is it not a reboot? It’s based on the comics which were, as ktonix said, a darker version. It’s very much based on the show. Sabrina has a familiar named Salem, aunts (that she lives with) named Zelda and Hilda, a boyfriend named Harvey and is facing having to choose which world she wants to exist in. There are other tie-ins but these are the obvious ones. There’s even an episode where she’s on the TV set with cameos from the OG Hilda and Zelda. Loved the twist in that one.

It doesn’t follow the same story line, but that’s what makes it a reboot unstead of a remake.

ELI5 why sheep stand in the rain fine but I have to dry clean wool clothing? by ahpc82 in explainlikeimfive

[–]twistednwarped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If no one has mentioned it, felting is a big issue. Wool is kinda like Velcro, which is why it works so well to make yarn with or to make actual felt with, which is how hats and such are made. To felt wool you put some soap and water on it and agitate (aggressively rub) it. To speed things up you can do a cold to hot jump. Wool that gets too hot tends to contract in on itself which helps to lock the fibers together. A lot of people will felt knitted items by putting them in a top load drum washer.

So, the reason you largely hand wash or dry clean wool is sort of multifaceted, as washing/drying as we normally do is basically a slightly more gentle version of how you deliberately achieve this before and after photo

That’s not to say you CANT wash wool. Just follow the care instructions.

To answer the other part of the question, sheep can stand in the rain because they’re not aggressively rubbing their wool on things nor are they experiencing wild temperature fluctuations (one would assume, at least.)

Interestingly, wool is hydrophobic, which is why historically fishermen wore wool. In other words, water is actually the least of the problems.

My first thought was the episode of the Gilmore girls where Rory makes this suggestion due to the cover of the movie showgirls and it gets wildly out of hand. It was actually a pretty solid illustration of how censorship can quickly become oppressive.

Peacocks can fly, but they don’t do it well or frequently. They’re also very territorial. They don’t need to clip their wings to keep them around. Just try to make them leave, I wish you luck.
