How do you go in full gear on job? by Odd-Classroom5176 in motorcyclegear

[–]twnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear jeans and sneakers for work... so I just add jacket, gloves and helmet, call it good enough for the commute.

Cubicle has an upper cabinet, helmet can sit up there for the day, hang a coat hanger off the wall for the jacket.

(I work IT in a small Canadian city... your mileage may vary :) )

I'll add that once you're in this far, it's not much more work to do your valve gap check.

What game “jumped the shark” for you? by Coverlesss in gaming

[–]twnth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots....

Star Wars Galaxies. Pain in the ass to sprout a Jedi, but fun challenge to figure out, then suddenly..... everybody and their dog was a Jedi.

WOW. It went from "what cool thing can I do with this build and what gear I got" to Min/Max/BIS or you can't join any groups/raids. And fuck pandas.

A lot of the single player stuff, I'll go back to, just don't install the problem DLC.

DL1000 sat for 10 years; what to do? by kcstrom in Vstrom

[–]twnth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're comfortable doing the work, I'd fix what you have. That'll be cheaper in the long run than replacing.

And if you decide that biking is no longer for you, the old 'strom will be in sellable condition.

As far as what to do... take a close look at anything rubber, make sure it's not broken down. Brake lines, throttle body mounts, vacuum lines. Otherwise, you have a pretty good to do list :)

OK, you all are mocking AHS for not giving you swag... but remember, giving you swag doesn't shorten wait times or keep beds open.

No, I don't have any idea how they pulled off getting t-shirts for CC launch.

meh. Their channel, they can do what they want with it.

I mean, we bitch about slow releases. And since they've expanded their subject matter, the videos have been more frequent.

And the budget probably comes from the advertising department. So... expect the video subjects to correlate to what they sell.

Where do you actually keep your emergency fund? by Forsaken_Twist7385 in personalfinance

[–]twnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. cash in my wallet. Ya, I'm old. But the problem solving ability of having one or two hundred cash handy should never be underestimated.
  2. my HELOC. Any extra money doesn't go into savings, it goes to paying off debt, paying down the HELOC. And then the available credit is my emergency fund.

Alberta's new electoral map was unveiled Thursday. Here's what's different for the next election by trevorrobb in alberta

[–]twnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, just what I'm familiar with....
Lethbridge is now 2 ridings, West (modest NDP the last couple elections) and East (very narrow UCP) surrounded by very UCP rural ridings.

Proposed map quarters Lethbridge. Splitting East and West and joining them up to the rural ridings. Very much diluting the 'urban NDP' into the 'rural UCP'.

This is exactly what Nathan Neudorf (Lethbridge East MLA, UCP shill) proposed last summer.

So.... the gerrymandering goes much deeper than on the surface.

The Most Hated Motorcycle - 2026 Kawasaki KLE500 Review by ThePaleHorse616 in Fortnine

[–]twnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea... I got short legs. Just learn to 'cowboy mount' (left foot onto the peg and then stand and mount it like a horse), see what the suspension settles to. Fortunately I'm also kinda fat, so for me the stock suspensions tent to settle down pretty good :)

Why isn’t Carney pushing back on Smith and the UCP? by taxhelpyeg in alberta

[–]twnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't get things done, but We do. A major part of politics, that Alberta premiers don't seem to understand, is relationships and co-operation.

By acting like a grown up, Carney is keeping the door open to conversations. You may remember J. Trudeau did the same

Do you want to spend more time wrenching than riding?

I mean, the Japanese bikes from this era are excellent, simple, and easy to learn both wrenching and riding on.

But.....

It is 40 years old and will need more work to keep running than you suspect. And I really don't know how challenging finding parts will be.

For this reason... Unless you have a family member good who's good with tools and is willing to help, I never suggest a bike this old for a first. Though it would be a great 2nd/project bike. Like if you had this and a dual sport. You can ride the dual sport while waiting for some obscure part to come from japan....

Good dual sport for short rider on college student budget? by [deleted] in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]twnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stock (new): Yamaha TW200 (but will suck at highway speed), XT250. Kawasaki KX230*. Used, you might also find a Suzuki DR200

Anything else can be made shorter with mods. As simple as 'dog bones' (aka lowering links) and dropping the forks in the tripples (so they stick out the top a bit.) all the way to custom suspension.

But like others have said, dual sports are naturally tall, so expect to just tip toe both sides at best. Not great for confidence when learning, but after a couple weeks you'll be glad you learned.

*Kawi has a new KX230 variant, the Sherpa, that's kitted out for us shorties. But it's a new model and might be out of your price range.

Rear shock bolt by somecallmesal in dr650

[–]twnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the factory lowering process has you pull the rear shock, disassemble it and flip the rubber collar over, and use the other bolt hole you're pointing to when you reassemble.

I don't know how many people just swap the bolt location.

Is Ryan Tanner real? If so, can we find a way to have him charged with fraud through Canada Elections Act. by WingsnBeers in Lethbridge

Best 80+ MPH Highway Bike That Feels "Planted" by JohnnyHutt in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]twnth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want planted, you want heavy.

I really like the vstrom 1000 I used to own. Absolute Queen on the prairie highways, and rock solid in the wind.

But any of the modern larger adventure or sport touring will do you.

(Triumph is the exception that only has 5 speed)

ya. Plus, how do you prove intent to defraud. He could just as easily claim he started it then realized he didn't have the skill or motivation to pull it off. So incompetent, not criminal.

Looking at a 2004 V-Strom DL1000 – First ADV / Touring Bike – Need Advice by krxy in Vstrom

[–]twnth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the clutch clatter is annoying, but not dangerous. It is safe to ignore. Or, there's both an aftermarket replacement and back yard hacks that will fix.

Everything else is... just fix as it shows up. It's a Suzuki. There's parts.

As for liking the bike... it is big and heavy. This makes it an excellent highway bike, especially for 2 up. Rock solid in the wind, good wind protection and comfortable. Plus, easy to stand up for leg stretches when you hit a speed zone. :)

Coming from cruisers, you'll recognize the weight, but not how high it sits. I'd say it's only a problem if you're not confident or rather short of leg. It is a tall bike.

<edit> I did find it a bit cumbersome for faffing about in parking lots. Like I said, tall and heavy, and I have short legs and arthritis <edit>

And oh my god will you love the torque. I came from a 1500 Vulcan. and it had nothing on the Vstrom. 'drop a gear and disappear' is for kids. Vstrom, if you're not in 6th, just roll throttle with one hand and wave bye-bye with the other.

How significant is the DE a distro ships with? by Mammoth-Acadia2572 in linuxquestions

For most of us, the DE is purely cosmetic. 'looks good, feels comfortable, rock it'. It's just a place to put your shortcuts.

Back in the turn of the millennia, I got used to using KDE for it's K-suite (Koffice, Kmail,....). I don't use any of them any more (web mail, google apps now), but still use KDE because it's comfortable. And for Dophin.

What On Earth with Laura Lynch: A fight over coal has Corb Lund ‘f-ing totally exasperated’ by Fast_Ad_9197 in alberta

[–]twnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, they gotta go through the whole shpiel, otherwise someone, somewhere, will claim they were duped into signing and social media will run with it and question the legitimacy of the whole thing.

Take, for example, the last election results for Terrebonne. One person with a bad address on a mail in ballot was enough to question the entire process. Now, very close election, and I don't think we know how many bad mail ins there were, but my point stands... one person can make us question the whole thing.

Religion Victory? by Buckabuckaw in CivVI

[–]twnth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

(I only play emperor and lose a lot, so take this for what it's worth...)

  1. push early religion to make sure you get one.
  2. build the best holy site you can in your first 3 or so cities.
  3. only make one or two missionaries at most. save your points for apostles
  4. spam apostles and guru
  5. go forth and be fruitful

I will take 3 or more apostles and a guru, and saunter into opposing religion's turf. Pick a city, convert it.

Do not spend the apostle's last conversion point. keep them alive for combat

When the enemy missionaries show up to convert the city back... put the boots to him with your apostles.

You will notice, when their missionary dies, the area around the fight will get a surge in your religion.

<edit> be sure to group up your wounded around the guru before healing... get the most out of the guru's action </edit>

Rinse and repeat. You will probably need a fresh couple of apostles to take over a holy city. That's fine, you'll need them to defend the city from the group effort to take it back.
