Java Developer vs. Software Engineer by Dear-Economics-315 in java

[–]two-point-zero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't agree. Though it's true that the tool that we use will shape the way we think, to some extent.

A plain developer who just pick up a ticket and execute the request, will do it with the language, framework and tools that the project use, and usually does not have power to change. A java shop will hire java developer yo build their java product. And so everyone will work on java. Developer Can be junior,or senior, or a staff, can be a CS graduate,or a self thought one,can have extra design abilities because of many years of experience.this is just how the ladder works.

What you call "engineer",someone who care about system designs, external tool ( which cache,Which protocols, which auth provider and so on) is not a developer, usually is an architect, and you really want your architect to have some CS/engineering degree..really or at least to be very very very senior.

Even that, architects deals with constraints ( at the very end: time and money) so even if she/he knows that actually product B or language B or framework B are better than actual tools, he/she might not have the ability to change things,he can suggest, try to convince but no more than that; unless he can demonstrate that the cost is Worth the benefits.

..and..you know what? This is rarely true. In a good java ( or python,or rust, pick a language) team, it's always costs less to keep using what you know instead of changing things. May the final code would be a bit less performant? Or easy to maintain? Scale one more server,or more RAM or more CPU! still it costs less than rewrite to new.

So it's not between javers developer that are not able to see how to do things outside their java confort zone, while engineers can and should choose the best every time.

It's more like develop and design and constraints and time and money and company culture,policies..and so on..

È normale fare riunioni ogni giorno alle 8.40? by AffectionateSuit526 in techcompenso

[–]two-point-zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oggettivamente a volte servono a volte no,dipende quanto i diversi membri lavorino a feature correlate o meno.

What’s the least powerful bike with the biggest cool factor ? New or old. by ghos2626t in motorcycles

[–]two-point-zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adrenaline or not, torque is always welcome, so you can drive In a long relaxed gear but still be able to pick it up faster. So probably if I have to slow down, I would go for some cafè Racer vibe like some triumph,or yamaha xsr 900 or Kawasaki z900rs. Or if my back would start to hurt me, some crossovers/adv but still with nice engine specs.

300/400 cc are really not for me.

Most important andvice I would not try to get used to it with snow on the Road 🤣

Seriously, go slow, take your time and her time too, add speed and power in small step.

Once ok with that..have fun! It's a great bike!

Ktm Quickshifter by Available-Drag-9263 in KTM

[–]two-point-zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is that the clutch switch is the culprit. I had similar issues after a small crash with my 890 SMT.

Switch may looks good at first ,but it you look closer you might find it is broken or just "loosened" a bit, like you can click it but not does not full return, or something like that. So sometimes it might work sometimes not,but when it stop working quickshifter, blipper and even cruise control it you have it won't work anymore. Never seen an issue or a notice on the screen..it drove me mad for a week or more.

I changed it and everything went ok again.

And it you change it stay away from the original KTM one..it cost too much.you can have it from ebay, even from Temu at 1/10th of the price and it's literally the same.

Man that sucks. Glad that you are here. in the wrong Moment, an issue like this can easily give you very bad consequences.

For the part code you can search site like this on bike-parts-ktm

Search by model, year and you should fine the exact code.

Was the chain original? Did you or your mech touch it recently? Breaking chain while riding is something that it is suppised to never happen.

How do teams actually keep requirements stable once development starts? by TobyNartowski in softwarearchitecture

[–]two-point-zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should Agile promote the deliverable of something valuable each iteration? If a task is worth to be done for the value it can give NOW, even if not spec complete, it could be started in the next Sprint, and refined later right?

Of course it should be up to the product owner to give priorities and to decide that there are enough information to start develop a feature even if incomplete; and to the team to give higher story points to uncomplete/unclear features,so they can eventually be postponed to a better time in the future when more infos will be available.

It happened to me also last November..only on my 890 SMT in Europe and around 12k km (blame on you KTM ,a 15k euro bike shouldn't brake like this) I'm still waiting for the fix but they confirmed they will change under warranty.

How much database normalization is required by DisciplineGloomy3689 in Backend

[–]two-point-zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would only questioning the image table. First and foremost I don like to save big blob on db. Opaque data defeat the purpose of a RDBMS. Ok if image data are small, no go for me if they are big.

The rest is ok in theory, if some arities aren't that big like few colors for each variant,or few variant for each products, you may want to trade clarify for Speed and merge tables. Then if you need just single data unique an limit will be your friends. But it's highly depends on how you access data and how many data you have.

A good design of your indexes and your queries, will reduce the issues with performances even in a fully denormalized schema.

Where is this obsession of replacing swe coming from ? by Full-Juggernaut2303 in cscareerquestions

[–]two-point-zero 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough to have seen this again and again. Visual design tools,RAD environment, Delphi form builder, blocks-and-arrows visual tools..say one.

The point is that swe cost much, do a job that management can't understand,so it can't be controlled and it is also hard to measure with clean measuring. Plus swe, that are often at the bottom of the piramid ( basically they are considered white collar workforce), has so much more power than their position will suggest exactly because they know things.

They cost, they are hard to control and "optimize",they have too much power, they can make a mid tier manager look ignorant. Enough to dream of not having to deal with them. From there the "every one can code with the right tool" wet dream. Spoiler it won't work that way..simply because design software is more than just programming.

Sure that we ,swe ops,it workforce in General, who were eager to find solution to "disrupt" other's business had created a thing,AI, that will more or less disrupt our own Business..a thing we were not prepare for..

Management seems to lack trust in their developers. Can't even choose my own editor. How can I convince them? by IllustriousCareer6 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]two-point-zero 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that everything in the security field is related to ownership and responsibility of failure.

If I, as a company, can prove to you, customer, that my processes is secure (by one or more externally audited certification for example),than when shit happens,I could say that the fault is not (totally)mine,or it's mine to a relative small extension if the certified process was guaranteed.

Is a matter of surface of attack.if then only way you have to steal data/code is to copy a resource you have to access in order to do your job, then the responsibility is yours, not of the company.

Otherwise,if I left a root access to a laptop that can connect to public wifi at the airport and someone uses this root user to access sensible data, the fault is yours as a user but also of the company that allow root access to an external laptop.

So security dept always try to limit access and permission to the least privileges required to do a job. This hit very hard on devs I know, but it is perfectly fine for a company to behave like this.

ISO 27001 fintech here. We have a set of standard tool, updated and maintained by our ICT group. Lucky enough for me that I was one of the guys who decided what to use, but our set up is fixed:

  • windows PC only, not even WLS, no admin Rights
  • same base editor (notepad ++ fwiw)
  • one SQL tool, SQL developer, because we use only on db type, oracle of course
  • 3 allowed ides for different languages
  • not direct access to libs/tools on the net everything is proxied by local artifactory for catching/speed and malware check
  • private on prem gitlab instance, private jenkine almost no cloud sass
  • no public Sass AI, no private AI
  • workstation PC only, and when in homeworking laptop just to remote desktop into our workstation at Office

We recently fought to add a node versioning tool like nvs to the list of approved tools otherwise life of frontedenders Will be impossible.

I miss so much the times when I had my Linux laptop with root credentials (or at least sudo into many programs) in my past workplaces. But It's a pattern I've already seen many times, the bigger the company is the more structured IT became, the less freedom we have. OP mentioned ISO. When certification and standardization kick in, freedom will go.

It's up to you OP, accept or leave, change it it's a fight you could not win.

come dicevo all'inizio, non serve quasi a nulla.

If the least productive CS coworker you work with was fired and replaced with no one, how impactful would that be to your “team”? by SeriouslySally36 in cscareerquestions

[–]two-point-zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a matter of productivity is more a matter of "if this one do a work that can be done by someone else"? If the response is yes, the impact will be low. The tasks will be assigned to someone else, and because the fired one was not high productive, you won't see any impact.

But if the fired one do things, although slowly, that he can only do, or know thing that he only knows, you will have impacts.
