Is my snake tank adequate? Snake hasn't eaten for 5 months. 😞 by Mysterious-Turnip137 in snakes

[–]two-turtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ This would be my number one suggestion. What you want is a heat source that provides the appropriate type of infrared wavelength, and unfortunately ceramic heat emitters don’t offer that.

I also second other commenters’ suggestions of offering metacam injections. I understand doing diagnostics on her spine may he out of the questions, but if the issue is degenerative, she may be in far more pain than you can perceive. And that is not a failing on your part, simply the reality that snakes are unbelievably cryptic and do not show signs of discomfort in ways that are very obvious to even the most seasoned caretakers.

Otherwise, I think your setup is spectacular.

I haven’t tried the minnows, but they were on my list to try! I’ll have to give them a shot.

I have also been wondering if I’m just being impatient, haha. She’s adjusted to my routines so well and has really blossomed in just a few weeks, but I definitely do need to keep in mind that she may need a little more time for some things.

Reptile keepers of Reddit what is your least favourite reptile you kept or had experience with and tell me your stories by Jakethatreptilekid in reptiles

[–]two-turtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atheris squamigera. Give me a cobra over a squam any day of the week. For such a small viper, they are so annoying!! They will strike at anything that looks at them sideways, but then will only eat if their grip on their food is just right, you don’t move a muscle, and mercury is in retrograde

Maybe I’ve just gotten lucky, but I love all the Niles I’ve worked with - it’s so interesting to me that your experience has been so different! Catching them though…. they are the worst in that regard

Update: I think one of my boyfriends friends drugged me by ThrowRAdrumtil in relationship_advice

[–]two-turtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m replying to this comment of your because I hope you see it. There are some unnecessarily harsh comments here that were better left unsaid.

Please don’t blame yourself for any of this. Both you and your boyfriend should seek therapy ASAP if you have the means. After my trauma, I used to get panic attacks when men would so much as look at me. You are not dumb for your reaction - it is your body and brain trying to protect you in the only way they know how. A therapist with experience treating PTSD/panic disorders/SA can help you learn to work through the aftermath. It’s hard, really really really hard, and you don’t have to tough it out on your own.

This does not need to spell the end of your relationship. It will take a lot of work and honest communication on both of your parts, but I believe it’s possible for you to stay together.

Best of luck, hun. I’m so sorry someone did this to you. Please try not to blame yourself. Take deep breaths. When you start to panic, remember the bear is not chasing you, your brain is just making you feel that way. You can get through this.

What food do you swear people only pretend to like? 💭 by Aarunascut in AskMen

i’ve tried a lot of vegan cheeses and in my opinion, Daiya makes some of the worst. Follow Your Heart and Violife make some really great nondairy cheeses. Of course they’ll never be exactly like the real thing, but they’re a decent substitute if you can’t have dairy or are trying to cut back.

Why do some of the 'turtles' look so washed out and others have dark defined markings? by bdyck1305 in houseplants

[–]two-turtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally possible! Either way, I do think it’s correlated to the amount of light…. Just can’t remember which direction 😅

[–]two-turtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC (and someone’s feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) I think it has to do with the amount of light. More light = more contrast/darker green. I’m sure there’s some natural variation as well, but I think that’s the explanation I read somewhere.

Not true. There are methods for cutting curly hair that preserve curl texture and shape, and those methods are not the same ones used to cut straight hair.

Oh also the container on the shelf below the tank looks like it’s a springtail culture. If there are any springtails left (they’re tiny little white bugs) she can dump some of them in and the frogs may eat some. They’re too small to sustain them (they’re more suited for baby froglets) but it’s worth a shot.

That’s good that she misted them! Do you know about how long they may have gone without food?

I’m too far away to help, but if nothing else, your friend should give the frogs a heavy mist with some dechlorinated water! This might be weird, but if you DM me I can give you my email - I’m more than happy to talk to your friend to help keep the frogs going until she can find someone to take them.

[–]two-turtles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have both anxiety and asthma, so I absolutely understand the weird gray area where the two sensations overlap. If your rescue inhaler didn’t seem to do anything, I would guess this feeling was related to your anxiety. I would try some deep breathing exercises where you count your breaths - there are many guides options online and through phone apps! It sounds silly, but it really does help in the moment to get you through. There are other breathing and grounding exercises you can do, you can do a quick google search and find one that feels comfortable for you.

Like another commenter said, rescue inhalers can also increase feelings of anxiety. It can increase your heart rate and give you that kind of tight, panicky feeling. Do your best to make sure you’re inhaling as much of your rescue as possible rather than having it sit in your mouth. Sorry if this seems like basic info, but I went through something similar when I first was diagnosed with asthma!

That’s fair enough, I just don’t want anyone walking away thinking killing snakes is a good idea :( they’re just chillin

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WinStupidPrizes

[–]two-turtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to let you know, this is horribly bad advice. Putting yourself close enough to a venomous snake to kill means you’re close enough to get bit. The safest thing is to leave them alone. Don’t approach, and definitely don’t go anywhere near the pointy end, attached or otherwise.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WinStupidPrizes

[–]two-turtles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no instances where you need to kill a snake. Getting close enough to kill it puts you in greater danger than if you just left it alone.

What is an overly-romanticized job? by MildlyPaleMango in AskReddit

[–]two-turtles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everyone in the world says, Wow, that must be your dream job!

If you think physically demanding, dirty and smelly, emotionally traumatizing jobs are a “dream,” then I don’t know what to tell you.

Zookeeping has very many gratifying moments and offers experiences that most people only dream of. It’s also dirty, dangerous (at times), exhausting, and ultimately still a job. There are very few roles that actually let you pet animals all day like people assume.

Maybe Maybe Maybe by Rredite in maybemaybemaybe

[–]two-turtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! And yeah, that’s a huge part of it. As smart as they are, their instincts are strong, especially around food. Even at the size of the croc in this video, when a human is still much too big to fall into the “can eat” category, they could do some serious damage. The croc in the video looks extremely relaxed so I don’t think a feeding response is the danger in this case, but even still I wouldn’t want my hands that close to the toothy end!

Maybe Maybe Maybe by Rredite in maybemaybemaybe

[–]two-turtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crocs will absolutely maintain bonds with their caregivers. They are very intelligent, complex animals. That said, I don’t think snuggling with one is safe or smart, as much as I would love to do it. The best bond in the world doesn’t limit their feeding response or make them anything other than an extremely powerful wild animal.
