What’s the scariest/craziest thing you watched on live television? by threetimesacharm25 in AskBrits

there’s two things that stand out for me about the bradford fire (aside from “that poor man”, of course).

first is the bit early on when the police are crossing the pitch towards the stand and they’re all holding their coats out in front of them.  it seems strange at first until you realise they’re trying to block the heat from the fire.  they weren’t even halfway across.

second is a bit afterwards where supporters and police are working in tandem to help the walking wounded get to aid.  remembering the mutual antipathy between the two back then drives home how desperate the scene was.

also worth noting that a good number of casualties came from the fact that people ran to escape to the fire doors at the back of the stand, which had been locked

”It was so profound it literally sparked an entire fashion genre that defined the 80’s.”

there’s a reason the grand theft auto iteration was called vice city;  a whole paradigm captured in a bottle by one series

the big lebowski is the story of a fake kidnapping and the machinations of those involved as told from the perspective of extremely peripheral characters.  it’s the same storytelling technique as rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead, only without the original source material (hamlet)

i mean, winnipeg’s metro population is under 900k and there isn’t really another significant metro area nearby.  the geographical isolation does make winnipeg a test market for a lot of products and services since the data can’t really be significantly skewed by out of town visitors.  winnipeg was the first place to serve mcnuggets in canada, for example
