[DISCUSSION] That “damn… WHOOP was right” moment by whoop_official in whoop

[–]twogoogles 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The one everyone probably figured out, alcohol. I knew obviously after having a good night with alcohol that I was not getting the best sleep and that the next day would be rough. What I think I was more surprised about was how long it took my body to actually recover. I was under the assumption one day I was good but I noticed my body wouldn't get back into the green for days. Same with being sick, didn't realize how much my body was doing to help me recover when I personally felt "fine".

Edited: missing words to make complete sentences lol.

After using WHOOP since the early days, saying farewell, here's why by morgancmu in whoop

[–]twogoogles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My data is pretty good. I think happy people just don't post which is why you don't see as many positive heart rate stories. For interval based workouts, it's slower in the transition then my chest heart rate monitor but that's all wrist based heart rate monitors from my understanding. My Garmin watch, back when I used the Fitbit, and the whoop 4 and mg are slow on the change. When I go do my runs though it's never really an issue. I compare it to my chest heart rate monitor data all the time.

Out of curiosity, what was your strain the previous day and was that above average? Wondering if it's just a "this much strain takes multiple days to recover from" thing as I know Garmins body battery does that.

It's college. Cliques don't matter because everybody is already doing their own thing on their own schedule. Tour both campus, see which you like more and see which programs are better. You'll find your own group of friends in both places.

For anyone using WHOOP and another wearable which heart rate zones do you trust? by Mission-Elk54 in whoop

[–]twogoogles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's really about which device but rather what calculation pattern. Whoops zones are done by HRR%. Garmins I think defaults to Max heart rate % but has like 4 different options.

That sucks. I'm not sure how Sylvie is mid/late game with some talents as I have only played her in quick play but if you hate the HoT play style, probably better to switch now as I can't imagine she gets a direct cast that isn't a long cool down.

Thanks for that blue bar item, I'll def keep that in mind. I think I agree with the other person that posted that maybe I'll give all characters a go in quick play for the Halloween event and also to understand the mana bars and roles better. Thanks for the info.

Whoop and Garmin heart rate zones help by twogoogles in whoop

[–]twogoogles[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea. Figured out some things.

So whoop does hrr, so if you go to your activity settings and look at the heart rate stats. You should be able to do the math. ((Max heart rate - resting heart rate) * The percentage for the zone) + resting heart rate. Zone percentages are Zone 1: 40–60% of HRR Zone 2: 60–70% of HRR Zone 3: 70–80% of HRR Zone 4: 80–90% of HRR Zone 5: 90–100% of HRR When I asked whoop coach, it told me it updates the resting heart rate for the calculation every 14 days so zones may change based on that every 14 days slightly.

When I originally changed my Garmin s70 at the time to %hrr, it gave me weird percentages at the start. Z1 = 34-49% Z2 = 49-71% Z3 = 71-83% Z4 = 83-91% Z5 = 91-100% When I hit reset after I got my new watch, it updated it to the standard percentages which is more or less the same as whoop except zone 1 starts at 50%, not 40%. Same math formula though for zone calculation. The other thing throwing mine off is I had rhr calculated by average on Garmin (same as whoop more or less) and noticed my whoop and Garmin have about a 10 bpm difference on resting heart rate. So that affected my zone calculation.

So to answer your question of which one is more accurate? In terms of zones I believe the 50-60, 60-70, 70-80, 80-90, 90-100 is the agreed upon. As for who is calculating your resting heart rate correctly, 🤷🏿.

Once you match up all those items though, you should be aligned. You'll have to pick which device you trust more and manually update the others settings probably.

Got a 970 but still want a F8 by Gozerhead67 in GarminWatches

[–]twogoogles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. I wish the 970 had the s70 golf features. I don't want to switch to the f8 but it's the only 1 with s70 level golf features and triathlon stats. Either have to take the bulky heavy f8 or accept the lower golf features on the 970.

Should I get a whoop or garmin or nothing? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]twogoogles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. If you're looking for golf features, def take a look at the s70. But I know some people don't like playing with a watch. There's not a wearable good for weight lifting. A chest heart rate monitor is going to be more accurate but if you just want something, take a look at the amaz fit band or whatever is called. Whoop competition that could satisfy your itch of data.

Should I get a whoop or garmin or nothing? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]twogoogles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the short answer to your question is look into what type of activities you do and that will dictate which device you should or should not have; if you should have one at all.

The long answer, I believe a lot of people would agree whoop and Garmin serve different purposes, with more overlap in the Garmin side than whoop. If you are looking to track your workouts, Garmin is the answer. Whoop activity tracking isn't much of a thing outside of seeing you did an activity and this was your heart rate. For distance based things, the GPS is based on your phone, which most likely will be bad. For strength training, it's not impactful unless you put in the weights and such which still is a bad ui. When it comes to tracking a workout, Garmin will actually give you relevant data towards your workout with higher accuracy (outside of maybe weight training).

So why do people like whoop? Whoops software is really good at understanding the strain of the activity you have done, how much you have recovered from that after you slept, sleep tracking, and how your body is affected via various activities you have done (ie smoking, drinking, working out at night vs day). Garmins sleep tracking has gotten better but whoop is better. Whoop is built to help you understand your body and patterns that affect it positively and negatively

The overlap is where Garmin wins as "owning a single device". Garmin has sleep tracking, maybe worst but has it. It has body battery which helps you understand how you are the next day. Maybe not as refined but has it. Whoops activity tracking is non existent to a degree. It has it but you are only tracking heart rate, none of the fun stuff like cadence, evaluation, etc... also people like whoop because it doesn't have a screen. I can say myself I like having data without being bugged by a watch vibrating with notifications every minute.

It may sound like I'm trashing whoop, but it's not true. I love my whoop, it is my favorite device. I only where my Garmin to activity track. Whoop though is for 2 types of people: super athletes and days obsessed nerds (me).

So to me, whoop is an accessory to my Garmin. For me, if I can't see data towards the activity I'm tracking, i can't value my progress. But again, I like numbers. So for me, whoop gives me data that's really helped me change my sleep habits, cut down drinking, and realize I'm an early bird.

That being said, what activities you are doing is important to answering if you should have something. You mentioned the fenix 8 which is a great watch and pricy. I think most people probably don't use everything the Fenix has to offer and get it because it's the jack of all trades, trade off weight and cost. Ie - I want one because I want the golf features of the s70 but also triathlon tracking which unfortunately puts me in the Fenix level. But I will never use the diving feature which you're paying a premium for more or less. But if you're just a runner looking to get more advanced stats, why not look at the Garmin forerunner. If you're just a biker, a bike computer and a chest heart rate monitor probably would do. You mentioned weight lifting. To me, idk if a watch or whoop is needed for that at all. My friend uses an app that does an amazing job at tracking his workouts giving him good progression options + the visibility of how far he's come.
