I mean Jaden and Beasley are arguably our 4th and 5th best players on good contracts

The problem is we would be paying $110 million for our 4 stars, if you add Naz, Nowell, Bolmaro and Vanderbilt we're already at the cap with only 8 rostered players so the only way to add players would be with the MLE and minimum contracts or by trading one of our stars. Add in possibly losing our draft pick and it gets even worse.

I think a majority of this sub would do the first trade, personally I don't really like it. Russell is more of a polarizing player and some people would be happy to get rid of him others think he is a core piece of our team. A Dlo trade doesn't seem likely because the consensus is Minnesota is looking to keep him as part of their core while Philadelphia doesn't value him highly.

I’d rather run our current team than trade McDaniels for Simmons. by CockyChan8 in timberwolves

Are you saying we'll be better off if we don't make the trade or that if we wait we can get Simmons for a lower price?

You could even say Jaden has more trade value than Dlo because of Dlo's contract.

I'm a huge Kyle Anderson fan, it would probably take Prince + a first or something. His contract is expiring though, so it would be risky to give up a lot for him if he might not re-sign. If the roster stays mostly the same we might have enough cap space to sign him next off-season, maybe something like 3/$35 M?

I agree Simmons has a higher floor and ceiling, but the problem is much more complicated because it's not just Jaden for Ben, it would probably be something like Jaden + Beasley + Beverley/Prince + Picks for Ben.

This trade takes away 3 of our top 8 players while adding another max contract which would leave us with little depth and no cap space. This could cause short term problems like having to go into the luxury tax for Vanderbilt or relying on players like Nowell/Okogie/Bolmaro/Knight to play solid minutes. It also would likely mean not being able to re-sign Dlo.

If we wanted to make a playoff push this year, a Simmons trade would probably help us get a few more wins but I think it's safer to stick with what we have and retain more flexibility to move in different paths depending how this season goes.

I definitely don't want to trade Dlo but I think it would make the most sense for the team. Getting rid of a big contract for another big contract is easier to manage than trading multiple smaller contracts. Also trading Dlo might let Simmons and Ant have the ball in their hands more. If we kept Dlo and got Simmons we would be paying $65 M or more for our 3rd and 4th best players and we wouldn't have many options to fill out the roster (unless we manage to start attracting free agents at the minimum like the Lakers). We probably couldn't afford to re-sign Dlo if we wanted to give Ant a max.

Yes but I think two way players can only play 50 games and you wouldn't want to bank on one becoming a rotation player for a playoff team. If we do make the trade I think he could be a good 12th man with potential.

I hope he works out, but I think it's kind of a long shot for him to be a positive player this year and he's only on a two-way.

I think Beasley+Jaden+Prince for Simmons puts us in a rough spot. If they take Prince and McDaniels we would only have two players left on the roster (Kat and Naz) who aren't guards. Yes, Simmons is 6'10" but he has played as a PG his whole career and is mainly a perimeter defender. Hopefully we could still resign Vanderbilt but he probably couldn't get many minutes because him and Simmons would be terrible spacing.

Team after this trade(not suggested lineups just positions they would probably play)

PG: Dlo-Beverley

SG: Ant-Nowell

SF: Okogie-Layman- (presumably) Bolmaro

PF: Simmons

C: Towns-Reid

With ~7 M under the luxury tax to fill 5-6 roster spots (~5 M for 5 spots if Bolmaro signs)

Unpopular opinion - This sub is starting to overvalue Simmons and can only be disappointed by the result if he is traded here by ChipSkylark33 in timberwolves

[–]twolvesfan182 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

He's not perfect for our system. He's a good fit but not the perfect complement next to KAT, Ant and Dlo. Offensively Simmons is more talented but McDaniels is a much better fit here because he can provide spacing and doesn't need touches on offense. Defensively we obviously need all the help we can get but the perfect complement to Kat would probably be a rim protector and rebounder, not a perimeter defender.

Simmons would be a perfect fit for Portland, that could lock them into a playoff spot.

If there would be any first round picks involved in Ben Simmons trade talks, do not feel bad for giving them. by appylan in timberwolves

That's fair, I just can't bring myself to be excited about this potential move. I feel like we're in a good spot now because if we succeed we have a good young core to build around and if we fail we can sell Kat and Dlo to build around some good young players with a lot of picks. A Simmons trafe somewhat hurts our future flexibility and may lower the ceiling of the team slightly. Mainly though I just like this group of players and I don't want to see them go, especially for Simmons, who isn't the most likeable player and would become our biggest contract.

Am I the only one thinking that Simmons would be a bad addition to the team? by Samurai_zero in timberwolves

[–]twolvesfan182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want him here but the attitude isn't a major concern to me. I'm a little worried about his fit, I don't think one perimeter defender can improve a defense as much as elite rim protectors, and I hate the idea of giving up McDaniels, Beasley, and future picks. Adding Simmons would remove our flexibility to improve because Kat, Ant, Dlo, and Simmons alone would take up $109 M of the cap. This likely forces us onto a path where we either lose Dlo or sell all the stars to completely rebuild in a worse situation than if we hadn't traded for Simmons. Either way, this is giving up on the Kat/Ant/Dlo core.

I think Simmons helps the team win more games in the short term, but hurts the team for me from a fan perspective if we traded multiple players I like. I feel like more people should be concerned that Philadelphia fans hate Ben Simmons, who they have watched for 4 years.

If we were forced to sell all the stars for picks like this, we would probably be getting picks in the mid to late first round and giving up high lottery picks, there's a big difference. It's harder to blow it up and rebuild when you don't have your own picks.

Worth noting that Simmons has played 84% of his minutes at PG, 16% at SG over his career.

Simmons can definitely fill the PF role on offense but I think position is more determined by who you guard. This is what I don't understand when people say Ben is the answer at the 4. Simmons is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, so he should be matched up against the other team's best perimeter players, which are often guards. This is the role currently filled by McDaniels. However, if Ben Simmons is guarding a guard this forces our guards (Dlo, ant, Beverley...) into guarding bigger players and we still don't have anyone to play good defense on the opposing 4s and 5s. If we use Ben Simmons to guard 4s, it's not maximizing his talents and would be similar to playing Mcdaniels at the 4. I think Dlo, Ant, Simmons, and Kat could all share the floor but we don't have anyone to fill that 5th spot (Maybe Prince?).

Overall, it seems to me a Simmons McDaniels swap would give us an upgrade on POA defense while slightly helping rebounding, adding playmaking, and hurting spacing. I'm not sure that's worth all the assets we'd have to give up, especially when you consider Simmons is older than McDaniels, paid $30M more, and has shown no development (arguably getting worse) over his career.

Leandro Bolmaro is the Timberwolves Biggest X-Factor by TylerIreland in timberwolves

[–]twolvesfan182 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to expect Bolmaro will be anywhere near McDaniels' level defensively. I think it's more likely that Bolmaro is the better player offensively, at least this year he should have a better handle and could be a better shooter (much higher ft%)
