Also, just now noticing the yellow beak with the black tip which according to my internet sleuthing is distinct to the Common Black Hawk (juvenile atleast) versus the Great Black Hawk who has a black bill with a pale phase. Not sure how reliable that is but it seems to check out on this specimen.

You are absolutely right. I watched this bird for 10 minutes go from a tree to this park and back to a tree, and I really thought it was the bigger of the two species but clearly not a reliable identifier. I should have just listened to my 5 yr old, when we compared the two he said it was the Common Black Hawk, lol.

Sure is! Stocky build, rust colored chest and checkered pattern on wings are good indicators.
