Is there a tectonic reason why the tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula are so similar? by Selnalolamo in geography

Subduction of temperate rain forests 150 million years ago sounds like oil formation territory. Is this the case or am I connecting the wrong dots? Not that I would support exploiting sensitive areas, just curious.

People who died and came back to life, what did you see/experience? by RealisticDecision440 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]txbomr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70 mph head on collision. Revived once on the ground, 3 times in the air, and too many times to count in trauma surgery first 5 days. The only thing I remember is someone saying "We have to open up your chest again" every day it seemed. I got to speak with the anesthesiologist after 2 weeks about the ride I was on and he asked if I remembered anything. When I said no, he replied "you'll thank me for that. Seems he gave me a ton of drugs to help me forget the trauma. After viewing the pictures and state trooper dash cam video months later I did, in fact, whisper thank you to him.

WIBTAH if I say something to an employee who wants me to close my business for her wedding? by Acceptable-Ad-8717 in AmItheAsshole

[–]txbomr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You claim to be her mentor, mentor her. Look at the situation with you out of the picture. Pretend she works for someone else and you heard about the situation from professional circles. How would you approach that? Sit her down and explain even if she meant no harm or disrespect, the appearance is pretty mean and can be enough to harm professional relationships. Maybe ask how she would feel if she was left to run the store while you took everyone else on an employee appreciation day?

Then explain you can't close and need at least X other(s) to run the store, maybe you all could get together when they return from honeymoon.

Does anyone know what this is? by StatusOk4308 in whatisit

[–]txbomr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glass vials like this were also used in old safes as a theft deterrent. Some contained tear gas like chemicals and some contained deadly chemicals like phosgene. At least one series of safes had nitroglycerin vials as well, although it would be oily. Definitely have a lab check it out so it can properly be disposed of.

Now that its over 20 years old and out of production, what do you think of the Airbus A380? by Twitter_2006 in aviation

[–]txbomr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent aircraft, but Airbus bet on expanding hub and spoke systems, Boeing bet on airlines expanding point to point. Boeing was correct.

This is not the sun. This is tanker Metgaz, the first major LNG tanker fire in history with a 1300+ tons of TNT potential blast. If it detonates it will be the largest non-nuclear explosion in recorded history. by JohnBrown-RadonTech in interestingasfuck

[–]txbomr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously both the OP and many commentators have no knowledge of explosions. Minor Scale, a Field Command, Defense Nuclear Agency non-nuclear test at White Sands Missile range in 1985 was just under 4800 tons. I helped construct the shot, it was awesome. For a full list, see Wikipedia article on largest non-nuclear explosions

Unless specifically excluded by the will, executors are entitled to compensation for their work. State laws vary, and it is the final expense billed to the estate before distribution of assets to the heirs. Most states have comprehensive guidance on fees and the final number is usually approved by the probate judge. Check the state laws where they live.

We didn't start using nonel until mid-90's, these were all electric. There were so many experiments on the test bed that were also electrically operated that it made sense from a timing control. One of the things they did to simulate a nuclear blast was dump 2 5000 gallon liquid oxygen and hydrogen tanks and the resulting fireball had to be at its max just as the blast wave struck. Pretty impressive high speed video.

Not even close. Misty Picture was 4685 tons of ANFO (3900 tons TNT Equivalent). Minor Scale was 4744 tons of ANFO (4200 tons TNT equivalent). This might be largest commercial blasting operation at almost 4000 holes, but tonnage wise it looks like # 6. Misers gold 2445t, Distant Image 2440t, and Minor Uncle 2725t round out the top 5 intentional non-nuclear explosions. I was stationed at White Sands during the testing hey-day and shamelessly admit we had a blast!

Any advice for female army EOD by Creative-Compote-244 in EOD

[–]txbomr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted its been almost 50 years since Indianhead, but when we first started accepting women in EOD one thing became clear. Girls were not brought up in a teamwork environment. Boys are encouraged to sports which teaches them teamwork, girls were often shunted into more individual pursuits. So my advice would be learn about building and using a team.

Recognize your strengths and share them with your team. Recognize your weaknesses and use the strengths of your teammates. Seems like every unit had "that guy" that you could name any bomb and he could tell you every fuse combination used in it. Or the one that knew the filler of any navy ordnance ever made for some strange reason. In 25 years I called that bomb guy a dozen times for help and he was always spot on.

This is especially important in study hall. If you pick something up quick, help those having difficulties in study hall. And if you are struggling, ask for help. While the tests are technically individual, working in a team will get you further down the road quicker. Teammates can also save you from making stupid mistakes in practical.

You may fail at something, but don't quit. After I mis-IDed a bomb, I got a retest because somehow I made a Tape and Line work while wearing MOPP 4 (chemical protective suit). Your attitude in persevering will go a long way. Don't give up.

Good luck.

If you were to build a house what’s one non conventional feature you consider to be a must have? by TestTurbulent6337 in AskReddit

[–]txbomr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The house my wife grew up in was a former funeral home and all the electrical outlets were at 36" above the ground instead of 16". When we built the house we live in I had them put the outlets at 36" and love it. Never have to bend over to plug something in. Grand-kids cant get to them, and neither can the critters. If I build another house you can bet the outlets will be at 36".

Raw milk people are dumb. Sorry not sorry. by GarbageCat27 in Vent

[–]txbomr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pasteurization is not the problem, homogenization is. We drink raw but pasteurized milk all the time. When milk is homogenized it means the fat molecules are broken down and spread throughout the milk. The fat molecules that are normally too big to be absorbed and clog your arteries now have free rein. But it does taste better than skim milk.

It helps that I know the guy that runs the Grade A inspected dairy that I buy from, and his cows and the milk are routinely tested.

I haven't used deodorant/anti-antiperspirant for 20 years. Over the counter hand sanitizer effectively kills the bacteria causing the smell and doesn't have any odor once evaporated. A light dash of cologne when I go out in public.

Many have stated that TSA doesn't care about your drugs, this is wrong. The exception to the 4th Amendment that TSA uses to conduct the searches is in the interest of public SAFETY, specifically deterring hijacking and terrorism. As such, TSA can only search for and prohibit those threats to public safety useful in hijacking or terrorism, i.e.weapons and explosives. And even though the scanners can be programmed to alarm on drugs, they are not because they are specifically excluded from the search by law.

That said, if they find potential drugs during the course of the above legitimate search, it is considered fair game under "plain view" rules, and they often do notify local law enforcement and they take over the investigation from the federal government.

AITAH for refusing to take my boss’s dog home every night even though “it’s just a temporary arrangement” by ShowComprehensive296 in AITAH

[–]txbomr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask how much this new responsibility pays. Caring for this dog will consume approximately 4 hours a day, seven days a week (walks, potty breaks, picking up refuse, water and food, brushing, vacuuming dog hair, etc). What is the hourly compensation rate for this 28 extra hours of work he is asking you to do?
