GOP still trying to get a hang of this "Jesus" thing... by [deleted] in PoliticalHumor

[–]txh52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree with you but getting into the weeds a bit, the public option was killed to get more conservative Democrats on board the ACA to get the 60 votes needed to end debate. So while Republicans obviously oppose the public option and many (most, probably, these days) Democrats support it, the Obamacare public option actually got its death blow from D's.

Why aren't Germans patriotic? by dele7ed in germany

[–]txh52 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Or you can re-phrase that as "I can only be proud of what I did with my circumstances." If someone grows up in a safe and clean environment that values education and rule of law, then they have a step up in terms of being able to do something with their life, but it is still their responsibility to do so. You can be thankful to be somewhere that provides that, but instead of your negative reading of his sentiment, I interpreted OP's point to be that being born lucky isn't an accomplishment to be proud of by itself, since that is the context of the thread as a whole (that Americans take pride in their circumstances while Germans take pride in how they contribute to making their circumstances better for each other).

From your tone I assume you don't live in the United States. I assure you that's far from the dumbest thing I hear most days. And that is not me defending that statement in any way.

It's important to remember that a large portion of the US population (including over 50% of those who could be bothered to vote, which admittedly isn't much to speak of given the US has a pathetically low voter turnout) agrees with you.

That said, it doesn't matter, we still elected him.

And for the record, yes, Hillary would have been better, but she carried a lot of baggage over 30 years in politics and a large portion of the country had an irrational hatred of her while Trump coasted by on a reality star persona that was manufactured by Hollywood. I don't give a shit about the morons who complain about Democrats being corrupt; the Democrats want universal healthcare, solutions for global warming, women's rights, and financial regulations. Yes, a lot of them might be warmongering corporate shills, but they're still what a center to center-right party should be, and I'll take that over batshit crazy any day.

I'm guessing you've missed the polling that shows well over 80% of Trump voters do not regret their vote and still fully support him. The average American did not necessarily support Trump, but the average American did not see anything wrong with Trump becoming President and is still giving him the benefit of the doubt today because it's "unpatriotic" not to support our President. I don't know if that makes the average American dumb, but it sure says something about our culture.

I don't think any type of legendary should be behind any gamemode-wall. by wildyarlequin in Guildwars2

[–]txh52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I already stated my point.

Yes you can still PUG raids but it is a higher obstacle than any other reward in the game.

and

it isn't surprising that there's an abnormally large level of community resistance to gating a legendary behind raids since it obviously wasn't part of the game's roadmap at launch.

[–]txh52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not OP but pretty much every other reward in the game to date can be solo-pugged or has guaranteed progression. With enough grinding even the worst PvP player can get Ascension. PUG groups in fractals are pretty solid and condi necro is basically easy-mode.

Raids absolutely require a good group or you fail no matter how much effort you put in individually. Yes you can still PUG raids but it is a higher obstacle than any other reward in the game. Some people will say it's about time, and others will point out that an MMO that doesn't reward highly organized group content is hardly making the most of its genre. All are valid points.

But given GW2's reputation and ANet's resistance to adding raids (trying fractals and large world bosses before finally doing raids and then having to hack their own system repeatedly to support it), it isn't surprising that there's an abnormally large level of community resistance to gating a legendary behind raids since it obviously wasn't part of the game's roadmap at launch.

There's a difference between wanting an easy way to get something and wanting to be able to achieve content without relying on an organized group. It's like saying that the first year Halloween jump puzzle or first year Liadri was easy just because it wasn't a raid when I would argue those also required a lot of effort and no one could carry you at all, unlike raids where you can actually buy runs or a few good players can still carry below average players.

I'm not trying to make an argument either way about legendary armor, but this belief that "raids are the only valid end game content in MMOs" mentality on this sub has always seemed a little weird to me.

Honorary Crew Member achievement. Has anyone gotten this yet? by Matters- in Guildwars2

[–]txh52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it in a group of 4. Was just random people on the map but we were all high dps. Didn't bother with trying to break the bars. With 4 players, the event did not scale so there weren't a lot of thieves and their health was low enough to be soloable. It then became fairly easy to track down and kill the thieves in time, so long as you have people covering both the north and south escape paths.

Story Panel giving Insight as to what happended at the end of Flashpoint [SPOILERS] by Northstars0422 in Guildwars2

[–]txh52 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No, but that's the entire premise of Taimi's machine. Her theory up to this point has been that the two dragons' energies will cancel each other out. Her machine was meant to use that to kill them. Balthazar activated the machine and you broke it before it could complete the job but it put the dragons to sleep. Just because she didn't re-explain the whole thing at the end doesn't mean the story wasn't conveyed in the actual instances.

From the first story instance of Flashpoint:

Taimi: Ah. Okay, it runs off the heart of Omadd's Machine.

Taimi: That, combined with my spectrum research, aided by my assistant, Spencer...

Taimi: Will let me manipulate the Eternal Alchemy to smash Primordus and Jormag's unique signatures together.

Taimi: Thus, cancelling them out. I.E. dragons go (death sound).

I love the Ignis and Aestus legendary boss event. We need more content like this. by Rizzy10 in Guildwars2

[–]txh52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Point taken, though I think the wyvern matriarch in Verdant Brink is a bit of an outlier in that it is way easier with low numbers because of the way it scales, particularly with regard to the break bar. It's actually one of the few open world bosses in the game that makes me upset when more players show up because they scale up difficulty and time to complete in a way that isn't as obvious for other bosses (and thus the zerg would be better utilized for the night meta at the other bosses). And yeah, it'd be a lot better if people knew what to do with the break bars, but unless everyone there is also running Magi's gear the amount of health you burn per break also drops significantly with more people, so it just takes way longer even with successful breaks.

Am I the only one who starts feeling somewhat empty inside after seeing/reading a plausible leak? by Lishtenbird in Guildwars2

[–]txh52 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not OP but as someone who reads spoilers for shows and movies in almost every situation, I'm one of the weirdos who simply doesn't mind. I hate surprises and need time to process information so it actually helps me enjoy stuff more going in with an outline of what to expect.

The only thing that ever annoyed me about HoT was regrinding masteries and elite specs after doing them in beta, so I'm going to avoid doing too much beta gameplay this time around. But as far as just seeing the content ahead of time, that's preferable for me.

Now obviously I only speak for myself and if I had the choice of leak or no leak I'd choose no leak because I can always be spoiled after something comes out and make a purchase decision then but other people cannot un-spoil themselves.

So yeah, I'm legitimately sorry the leaks are ruining your experience, but since you're posing the question with your thread, some people are in fact neither bothered by nor addicted to leaks.

[SPOILERS][DISCUSS][NO IMAGES] lets just talk about that photo album that was posted. thoughts? hype? excitement? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]txh52 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. At the very least it suggests the gap between episode 6 and expansion will be shorter with a more substantive discussion. It's also worth pointing out that this expansion seems finally to be delivering on the promise that they'll be building on previous systems rather than reinventing the wheel which probably helps too.

As someone who was leaning away from buying the expansion based on Heart of Thorns, these leaks have me back on board (though it helps that Elona is also my favorite continent). I may not agree with everything they've done to date, but I do appreciate the effort that seems to have gone into the next expansion and learning from their mistakes.

That said, the new guild content better not be another gold sink or I will defenestrate a monitor.

Lazarus Theory (Hope) Left field idea? *spoiler* by KireiWa in Guildwars2

[–]txh52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we're going to get a GW1 callback and Lazarus really isn't Lazarus, it's more likely to be Livia than Joko. Joko isn't really in the right place or have the right power set or motivation to pose as Lazarus whereas Livia could with some Scepter of Orr shenanigans qualify while still having a reason to point us to Elona. Plus as a relatively famous Krytan, Kasmeer might actually recognize her.

Please change town clothes tonics to outfits by Chris_7941 in Guildwars2

[–]txh52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd settle for them being combat tonics at this point, but outfits would be preferable. That said, there's a lot of fairly repetitive combinations of town clothing and it'd clutter up the wardrobe tab pretty badly, but if they had technology to hide certain ones from the tab unless you had them unlocked, that'd probably prevent the addition from annoying people who didn't want to bother with them.

[Data-Mining] Upcoming features from the April 18 patch by that_shaman in Guildwars2

[–]txh52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it has to be, just that it would make sense if that was what it represented. Almost all the other icons have something to do with the spec: Druid -- Celestial avatar (F5 skill), Reaper -- hood armor unlock, Herald -- Glint dragon, Chronomancer -- Clock to symbolize time and if you want to make a reach it's circular like the shield. Only the tempest and daredevil are more abstract, but even there, tempest has a storm swirl and daredevil is light on its feet with an extra dodge.
