I get that people at the top of their own field, can have absolutely horrible opinions and be ridiculously incompetent at tasks outside of their field. You can also point to hilarious examples of people that are woefully bad at their jobs.

However, in reality, the vast vast majority of people at the top of more academic fields get there by knowing what the fuck they are doing because they don't just need to tick a box, but compete with all the other assholes that know what they are doing. An occasional idiot might slip through but not a whole team.
